Data detection and coding for data-dependent superimposed training

A new detection method for data-dependent superimposed training with equi-spaced amplitude modulation or equi-spaced square quadrature amplitude modulation is presented in this study. Symbol and bit error floor of the proposed detection method is analysed. To remove the error floor, a data coding method is also proposed. Analysis and simulation results show that the proposed detection method outperforms the existing methods, and the data detection performance can be further improved via data coding.

Energy efficient continuous phase modulation signals for satellite intelligent transportation systems

In this study, performance of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which consists of satellite mesh networks, is investigated. These networks are characterised by the absence of the on ground satellite gateway and many power limited user terminals with small antennas which are able to direct connection with a satellite. In such scenario, energy efficiency signals, for example, continuous phase modulation (CPM) should be used for transmission. The authors analyse performance of a mesh ITS which apply multiuser frequency division multiplexed (FDM) transmission with coded CPM via computer simulations. The spectral efficiency of investigated system is improved by reducing the inter-carrier frequency (ICI) spacing and using simple iterative ICI cancellation algorithm at the receiver. The results suggest that FDM CPM transmission might constitute a desirable option in ITS satellite mesh, ad-hoc networks.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing peak-to-average power ratio reduction by best tree selection using coded discrete cosine harmonic wavelet packet transform

A new orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) based on coded discrete cosine harmonic wavelet packet transform (DCHWPT), is proposed. In this method, tree pruning is done for the selection of a tree structure with minimum PAPR. To identify different tree structures, Gray code is used which is communicated as side information to the receiver. Also to improve bit error rate (BER) performance and reduce PAPR, Hadamard codes are employed. The proposed method based on DCHWPT exploits the desirable discrete cosine transform (DCT) properties like energy compaction/low leakage, better frequency resolution and its real nature, compared with those of discrete Fourier transform. Further, the harmonic wavelet employed has built in decimation without any associated antialiasing filters and easy reconstruction by concatenation of different scales in frequency (DCT) domain with no image rejection filters and complicated delay compensation makes the proposed wavelet packet simple in implementation. The proposed OFDM discrete cosine harmonic wavelet packet (DCHWP-OFDM) which leverages the advantages of DCHWPT has been used for BPSK modulated signals. The DCHWP-OFDM provides an improvement of PAPR reduction of 2.4 and 3.4 dB as compared with those of Haar and Daubechies-4 wavelet packet OFDM, respectively. This reduction in PAPR is with a BER performance in the range of 0.001-0.0001 at an signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB.

Parity Check Encoded QPSK for Rate Adaptation in Coherent DSP-Based Receivers

An ultrashort rate-1/2 parity check (PC) code is used to switch the net data rate of a coherent quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission system to the equivalent of a binary phase shift keying (BPSK) system. Simulation results of PC encoded-QPSK show an improvement in receiver sensitivity of 0.8 dB over BPSK at the soft-FEC threshold of BER = 2 x 10(-2). In addition, the code allows establishing an absolute phase reference at the receiver;i.e., differential coding is not required.

Precoding Mapping Optimization for Magnetic Recording Channels

We study the problem of designing a rate-1 block-precoder to minimize bit/symbol error rate when storing a given source on a magnetic recording channel. A block-precoder of length b-bits is defined by a permutation pi on 2(b) blocks. We show that the problem of finding a permutation for the block-precoder that minimizes bit/symbol error rate is equivalent to solving the quadratic assignment problem, a known combinatorial optimization problem that is NP-complete. We exploit the symmetry group of the b-dimensional hypercube to reduce the search space, allowing a branch-and-bound technique to find the optimal 5-bit precoders. We also implement a local search algorithm that can find good precoders for larger blocklengths. We design precoders for MTR-constrained user bits and unconstrained parity bits with a reverse-concatenation architecture, and we evaluate the resulting SNR gains in a turbo equalization scheme.

We present a transmission experiment employing three spatial modes through a few-mode fiber coupled to the surrounding single mode equipment by a packaged mode multiplexer and demultiplexer. We evaluate and compare the impact of the residual crosstalk in our system on QPSK and 8QAM modulation schemes after 20- and 40-km transmission. We also give an estimation of the crosstalk induced by splices and by the few-mode fiber in our system.

In 1976, Massey introduced a method to compute the confidence interval for the frame error rate of a coded communications system based on the simulation of just a few frame errors [1]. He commented that his approach did not apply to bit error rate confidence intervals, because bit errors are not independent in a coded system. In this paper, we show how to overcome the limitation Massey recognized, and present a method to compute a confidence interval of the bit error rate of a coded communications system from a simulation of bit and frame error events. The proposed interval may be easily computed from the first and second sample moments of the number of bits errors per frame.

In order to improve the bandwidth efficiency of communication systems under strict power limitation, the use of multilevel modulation together with near capacity channel coding is essential. However, such an approach is sensitive to nonlinear distortion associated with high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the resulting signals. We consider the application of the multilevel coded modulation with multi-stage decoding (MLC/MSD) over nonlinear communication channels and propose a robust unconventional set partitioning approach in conjunction with the metric adjusted to the statistical characteristics of nonlinear distortion. Numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms the system with the conventional labeling in terms of achievable average mutual information (AMI) and frame error rate (FER).

In this paper we propose new coded modulation for multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. This coded modulation is a genralised concatenated code. Its inner code is embedded Golden code which we introduce in this paper with a decoding algorithm. Its outer code is a product code with component Reed-Solomon code. We use iterative decoding algorithm for this product code. The performance of the proposed system is estimated with a computer simulation.
