Intelligent reflecting surface-assisted single-input single-output Golden codeword-based modulation schemes

In this paper, two intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted single-input single-output Golden codeword-based modulation schemes for next-generation networks are investigated. In Scheme 1, one pair of Golden codeword super-symbols are transmitted over two consecutive time slots with the assistance of an IRS to maximise the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in each slot. Scheme 2 applies component-interleaving to the pair of Golden codeword super-symbols and transmits the modified super-symbols over four consecutive time slots with the assistance of an IRS to maximise the received SNR in each slot. A significant improvement in error performance is demonstrated over their counterparts, for both conventional/non-access point (AP) or AP-based IRSs. Scheme 2 exhibits superior error performance over Scheme 1, especially for small and medium IRSs. The theoretical average bit error probabilities for the proposed schemes are formulated and validated by simulation results. Low-complexity detectors for the schemes under study are provided and the computational complexity imposed by these detectors are analysed and found to be extremely low.

This article investigates new strategies to compute accurate low-complexity log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values based on the Bayesian formulation under uncorrelated fading channels for both antipodal and code shift keying modulations when no channel state information (CSI) is available at the receiver. These LLR values are then used as input to modern error-correcting schemes used in the data decoding process of last-generation Global Navigation Satellite System signals. Theoretical analysis based on the maximum achievable rate is presented for the different methods in order to evaluate the performance degradation with respect to the optimal CSI channel. Finally, the frame error rate simulation results are shown, validating the appropriate performance of the proposed LLR approximation methods.

Flexible Satellite Direct-to-Home Services With Layered-Division Multiplexing

Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) has demonstrated increased data rate capacity for wireless applications where the service bitrates being multiplexed are unbalanced. Current Direct-To-Home (DTH) broadcasting satellite standards (DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X) include Variable coding and modulation (VCM) mode. VCM provides the opportunity to deliver different services on a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) basis and in consequence target different reception conditions with a single carrier. This article proposes the combination of the tools provided by DVB-S2X with LDM for satellite broadcast and communication systems. This article describes use cases where multiplexing schemes can be beneficial in comparison with VCM (TDM) approach. The use cases include the delivery of High Definition (HD) and Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV services to customers as well as additional communication services. The performance of the proposal is evaluated with simulations under different channels, including the impact of satellite equipment non-linearities. Analysis shows that LDM provides considerable gain in comparison with VCM in both AWGN and non-linear satellite channels.

High performance bit-activation code index modulation method

With the increasing demand of applications for the spread spectrum technique, especially the demand for data transmission rates and spectral efficiency, the advantages of the traditional direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) system are limited. Therefore, multi-ary spread spectrum (M-ary) technology, parallel combinatory spread spectrum (PCSS) technology, and code index modulation (CIM) technology have been proposed. Although these three new technologies can improve the data rate, they all face the problem of the large consumption of pseudo-code resources. In order to solve the problem of pseudo-code resources, a bit-activation code index modulation (BA-CIM) method is proposed. At the transmitter, considering the good correlation among multiple pseudo-codes, the corresponding pseudo-code activation principle is established, and the corresponding spreading pseudo-code is activated by using the status of each bit of the index data according to the pseudo-code activation principle. Then, multicode superposition processing is carried out to spread the modulation data. At the receiver, the corresponding activation pseudo-code is obtained using the maximum peak-to-average ratio (MPAR) and secondary peak-to-average ratio (SPAR) judgement mechanisms to decode the multibit index data. Compared with existing methods, the proposed BA-CIM method can not only achieve a better bit error rate performance but also use the least pseudo-code resources. Moreover, BA-CIM has the best comprehensive performance improvement and is far superior to other methods. This research can provide technical support for the application of efficient spread spectrum communication.

Design of Non-Isolated modulation Code With Minimum Hamming Distance of 3 for Bit-Patterned Media-Recording Systems

In bit-patterned media recording (BPMR), the magnetic islands are adjusted closer together to increase the areal density (AD). This makes the bit-error rate (BER) performance of BPMR worse by inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-track interference (ITI) from cross- and down-track directions, respectively. To solve the ISI and ITI issues, the data is modulated into non-isolated patterns before storing on the medium of BPMR systems. Furthermore, for improving the non-isolated patterned modulation code, we introduced a method to create the non-isolated patterned code with a minimum Hamming distance (MHD) of 3 instead of 2 as in the previous studies. In our proposed method, first, we considered the generator matrix (GM) of the Hamming code to create 1-D codewords with an MHD of 3. Furthermore, these codewords were converted into 2-D codewords, mitigating the isolated pattern. Finally, to create a fast encoder and decoder, we used the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to encode the original data into the non-isolated codewords with an MHD of 3. The results show that our proposed model improved the BER performance of the BPMR system.

This paper analyzes the impact of the non-linearities of satellite high power amplifiers (HPAs) on the gain achievable by power domain non-orthogonal multiplexing techniques in Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite services. Previous studies proposed a system that combines DVB-S2X and Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM), providing significant capacity gains compared with traditional Time Division Multiplexing approaches. The paper investigates various use cases with a different mixture of broadcast and point-to-point/point-to-multipoint service scenarios. The satellite HPA non-linear characteristic is modeled using the Saleh model, and the benefit of including pre-correction techniques is examined with simulations. The results show a relevant reduction of the gain provided by LDM with simpler non-linearity models. Furthermore, the benefit of pre-correction schemes is also remarkable and keeps capacity gains close to 30% in certain use cases.

We take the first step towards understanding the fundamental limits of blind wireless network inference performed by a distributed network of single-antenna adversary nodes. The distributed adversary nodes are assumed to be blind to the protocol parameters as well as the modulation, coding and encryption schemes used by the network being monitored. Focusing on the special case of inferring the channel access probabilities of the monitored nodes, we derive minimax bounds for blind inference. We show that blind inference is possible with similar sample complexity (asymptotically) as non-blind inference given certain network connectivity conditions are satisfied.

A Visible Light Communication (VLC) transmitter that can transmit data efficiently without utilizing a blue optical filter is needed while also be able to produce high color and excellent lighting performance. A dichromatic LED configuration consisting of a data transmitter (Blue LED/Red LED) and illumination light source (LED Lime) is modulated with OOK-NRZ signal and then compared to traditional LED Transmitters. From a lighting perspective, Lime-Red and Lime-Blue WLED configuration can achieve Color Rendering Index (CRI) value of 81.8 and 76.4 respectively, compared to the highest CRI value of RGB WLED that is 74.5. From a communication perspective, Lime-Red and Lime-Blue WLED can achieve data rate of 1.31 Mbps (red modulated) and 1.28 Mbps (blue modulated) compared to data rate of 1.09 Mbps by traditional Phosphorous Cool White LED. Lime-Red and Lime-Blue WLED does not have the bandwidth limitation that is prevalent in Phosphorous White LEDs, which makes these 2 configurations able to trespass the traditional data rate limit without the use of blue optical filter. Thus, by only using 2 LEDs, VLC transmitters with high CRIs, and capability of transmitting a high data rate without the use of blue optical filter is obtained.

This paper proposes an adaptive mode and modulation coding switching (AMMCS) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicasting system. More specifically, in addition to the adaptively chosen modulation and error coding, two types of MIMO modes are adaptively switched, i.e., between spatial multiplexing (SM) mode, which can achieve higher data rate, and spatial diversity (SD) mode, which can provide higher received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Analytical equations for scheduling rate and average spectral efficiency are derived for both SD and SM modes in a 2x2 MIMO system. Simulation results well justify our analytical equations and also demonstrate that our proposed scheme can achieve higher scheduling rate when SNR is low and higher spectral efficiency when SNR is high.

Clutter mitigation in sub-Nyquist radars using difference set codes

In this study, the authors address the issue of clutter mitigation in monostatic pulse-Doppler radars, using sub-Nyquist sampling and compressed sensing (CS) recovery algorithms. Generally, clutter is modelled as a coloured random process and a whitening filter is employed to maximise the signal to clutter ratio. Here, the authors apply this approach to the case in which the received signal sampling rate is much smaller than the Nyquist rate. They also generalise the recently proposed sub-Nyquist method based on difference set (DS) codes, which uses very few samples to detect targets in the presence of only white Gaussian noise. By using the frequency-coded modulation waveform with the frequencies selected in accordance to the DS, the detection performance of the proposed method can be significantly improved compared with the previously proposed sub-Nyquist methods in the presence of clutter. Furthermore, the authors show that the proposed method can increase the target recovery resolution due to the features of the DS codes and the employed CS model.
