In order to realize very high throughput wireless local area network (WLAN) systems, which demand multi Gbps capacities/bitrates, the *** (Next generation WLAN standard at 60GHz band) is in the standardization process. To evaluate and select the proposed physical layer modulation and coding schemes in the standardization process, channel models for each specified usage model are required. In this paper, suitable impulse channel models for that purpose are proposed. Propagation measurements are carried out in a living room environment in the 60GHz band. To cover various usage cases, line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-site (NLOS) scenarios and three different signal transmission polarization types are examined, and each channel model's parameters are extracted by statistical analysis. These channel models are useful in designing systems for millimeter-wave wireless communications.

This paper proposes a new distributed Amplify-and-Forward (AF) scheme which is integrated with the Ring-Trellis Coded modulation (TCM) codes in order to achieve both high spectral efficiency and large diversity gain. In the distributed AF scheme, more users cooperate with each other. Fach user still uses half of its transmission freedom for relaying others' signal. However, different to the conventional AF scheme, each user further partitions its relay transmission into smaller divisions in order to help more users. As a result, for each user, the distributed AF scheme will have the same spectral efficiency as the conventional AF scheme, but creating more diverse transition paths and providing better diversity gain. In the scheme, output symbols are demultiplexed into several subframes, each of which will be relayed by a different user. As a result, each output symbol from a trellis transition branch can be relayed by a different user, assisting error-correction performance of the decoder. This distributed coding scheme is suitable for different wireless access systems, such as WiLAN and WiMAX systems. Our simulation results show that with the same spectral efficiency, the distributed coded AF scheme can significantly outperform the conventional coded AF scheme.

The first-order moment of (d, k) constrained codes is investigated in this paper. We propose a generalized moment balancing template to encode a (d, k) sequence into a single insertion or deletion correcting codeword without losing the constraint property. By relocating 0's in moment balancing runs of a (d, k) sequence, the first-order moment of this sequence can be manipulated to satisfy the Varshamov-Tenengolts construction. The moment balancing runs appear in a pairwise manner in this sequence. The lower bound of the number of balancing bits in the template is asymptotically of the same order as the universal template for random sequences, and is of a practical-interest small.

In this paper, we derive the minimum noncoherent distance of block-coded 16QAM, and propose noncoherent block-coded 16QAM (NBC-16QAM) accordingly. Various noncoherent block coding schemes are compared via computer simulations. We find that for both NBC-16QAM and the noncoherent 16QAM scheme proposed in 2002, the curves of bit error rates do not decade exponentially. When the block length is very small, NBC-16QAM performs worse due to its small minimum noncoherent distance. However, if the block is not short, NBC-16QAM has the best error performance because the codewords with small noncoherent distances are rare.

This paper proposes a novel joint source coding and modulation scheme. The modulation constellation points are selected according to their prior symbol probabilities for better bandwidth as well as better bit error rate performance. Both the analysis and simulation results are presented to verify that the proposed scheme can achieve better performance than the conventional disjoint source coding and modulation schemes if the modulation and source coding are designed jointly and efficiently.

Hybrid free space optical (FSO)/RF communication systems can provide high throughput short range ¿lastmile¿ connectivity. Since channel conditions are highly variable, adaptive symbol rate and modulation schemes are attractive for this application to make better use of available resources. This paper focuses on the information-theoretic analysis of such FSO/RF systems and introduces an adaptive communication scheme resulting in a capacity-approaching and seamless joint system. Numerical and simulation results give insight into the relation between adaptive parameters and system performance, and provide guidance for the design of a practical hybrid system.

In conventional wireless systems with layered architectures, the physical layer treats all data streams from upper layers equally and apply the same modulation and coding schemes. Newer systems such as Digital Video Broadcast start to introduce hierarchical modulation schemes with SuperPosition precoding (SPC) and support data streams of different priorities. However, SPC requires specialized hardware and has high complexity beyond most existing handheld devices. We thus propose scalable modulation (s-mod) by reusing the current mainstream modulation schemes with software-based bit-remapping. In this paper, we study how to optimize the configuration of the PHY layer s-mod and coding schemes to maximize the utility of videos with Scalable Video coding (SVC). Simulation results demonstrate significant performance gains using s-mod and the cross-layer optimization, indicating s-mod and SVC is a good combination for wireless video multicast.

Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is a new electromagnetic-wave based network coding scheme proposed recently to enhance network capacity, which deals with two nodes exchanging information through a relay node. In this article, based on Turbo code and M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK), an improved PNC method is proposed. More specifically, the transmitting information of each node is encoded by Turbo codes and modulated to an MPSK signal, and the sum-signal of any two MPSK signals corresponds to a unique exclusive OR (XOR) value of the two transmitting information bits, which can be modulated to a unique MPSK signal. Considering the noise existing in wireless relay channels, Turbo code is adopted to ensure the correctness of signals. Moreover, we analyze the transmission energy consumption of the proposed scheme. It is shown by simulation that the enhanced PNC method can reduce half transmission energy in the relay node over the original PNC.

We consider a link adaptation scheme with adaptive coding and modulation and adaptive retransmissions on a block fading channel. Therefore, we characterize the performance of the employed channel code with puncturing and repetition coding in a unified way and use this description to devise a method to adapt modulation and code rate in the initial transmission as well as in all retransmissions. We evaluate the performance of two adaptation strategies and compare them to the throughput-optimum and a simple scheme with fixed-length retransmissions.
