For terrestrial free space optical (FSO) systems, we investigate the use of pulse position modulation (PPM) which has the interesting property of being average-energy efficient. We first discuss the upper bound on the information transmission rate for a Gaussian channel. Next, we consider the more practical aspect of channel coding and look for a suitable solution for the case of Q-ary PPM. Instead of using a non-binary channel code, we suggest to use a simple binary convolutional code and to perform iterative soft demodulation (demapping) and channel decoding at the receiver. We show that the proposed scheme is quite efficient against demodulation errors due to the receiver noise. Moreover, we propose a simple soft-demapping method of low complexity for the general case of Q-ary PPM. The receiver complexity remains then reasonable in view of implementation in a terrestrial FSO system.

In GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) mobile satellite system, subscribers could not be paged when the MES (Mobile Earth Station) is normally out of coverage area due to additional propagation path losses. To alert the subscribers in such situation, a more penetrative and computationally efficient coding modulation is needed. In this paper two kinds of orthogonal coded modulation, which are 6PSK based and BPSK based, are analyzed. Through compared with the common paging channel modulation method, and the performance analysis of them, we conclude that they can increase the SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) of actual transmitted information, which is greatly more than the SNR of data in the common paging channel. To be emphasized, we also confirm the predominance of 6PSK modulation.

Hierarchical modulation has advantage that has Improved efficiency. And advanced hierarchical modulation was proposed that enhanced layer symbols are rotated to improve system efficiency. But this conventional hierarchical modulation scheme has some problems such as reduction of minimum distance of inner symbols in constellation that have 2bit error. And only constellation rotation can not optimize hierarchical modulation system. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical modulation scheme that includes constellation rotation and symbol's image value interleaving. System can get SSD(signal space diversity) gain with constellation rotation and interleaving that brings efficiency improvement. Comparing with existing system by simulation, we can confirm excellence of proposed system.

In this paper, we propose an economics-based, distributed multicast scheme for wireless relay networks. Our goal is to construct efficient multicast routes that serve as many users as possible with the given bandwidth budget. The proposed scheme, called Price-Based Distributed Allocation (PBDA), allows each node to make decisions independently. Through analysis, we prove that the original problem is NP-complete, and show that our heuristic has polynomial-time complexity. We also conduct simulations to evaluate the scheme's performance. The results show that by utilizing relay nodes, PBDA can provide efficient and stable allocation of wireless resources. PBDA produces low-signaling overhead and can be deployed in a very efficient, high-performance manner.

We investigate modulation-based parallel delta-sigma (ΔΣ) converters for wideband A/D conversion applications. A code division parallel ΔΣ conversion method is proposed, where each path consisting of a ΔΣ modulator operates on an input signal modulated with different binary code. In contrast to standard Hadamard based modulation schemes, the design provides flexibility in choosing the number of parallel paths and the type of binary modulation sequences. We exploit the information-theoretical approach to design an iterative probabilistic decoding procedure for optimal decoding of the ΔΣ modulator outputs. To demonstrate the decoding method, a maximum a posteriori probability decoder for the first order ΔΣ modulator is developed. Simulation results verify the iterative decoding procedure, demonstrate the use of arbitrary number of paths, and show that the A/D converter based on pseudo-random sequences achieves improved spurious-free dynamic range.

Compressive sampling (CS) is based on the principle of sampling signals according to their sparsity or compressibility as opposed to the rate specified by the Nyquist/Shannon sampling theorem. Shannon's separation principle of source and channel coding cannot always be used to improve CS reconstruction performance in the presence of noise, including conditions when the channel is time-varying and there is a delay constraint, or when multiple channels are present as in broadcast/multicast applications. In this paper, we propose performing joint design of the source and channel coding to improve noisy CS performance in multicast and time varying channels.

Network coded retransmission without soft combining (NC ARQ) has been studied for multicast or for multiple unicast. Some papers also mentioned that the soft combining with NC information will be the proper way to improve the receiving performance. However, some papers didn't mention the detailed combining procedure, and most papers on soft combining used extrinsic information for iterative decoding. This paper presents two kinds of NC ARQ, and designs three kinds of chase combining schemes on the network coded packets in very detail for LTE-A eMBMS system. This paper will show soft combining with the soft information on all the code bits is more efficient than just using the extrinsic information. Deducing from the basic MAP principle, the NC HARQ schemes designed in this paper are universal for all the modulation types with certain constellation and for all the Soft-In-Soft-Out channel codes. With proper redundancy factor, NC ARQ saves about 25% of retransmission compared with normal HARQ, while NC HARQ saves further, up to 50%.

Among the 4G technologies that managed to impose is the IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX technology. Mobile WiMAX promises to deliver high data rates over wide areas and at vehicular speeds of up to 120 km/h. The performance of such a system is greatly influenced by the type of application desired to be supported, either TCP-based (FTP, web browsing) or UDP-based (video streaming). The current paper proposes to analyze and compare the performance of a fully compliant Mobile WiMAX system operating at 2.3 GHz in a vehicular multipath fading channel (ITU M.1225 Veh.A). The results are generated on a link speed basis and are expressed in terms of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) switching points as well as the maximum achievable throughput and operating range. Different physical packet error rate (PER) requirements are considered, based on the quality of service (QoS) level imposed.

In this paper, we propose a generalized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmit preprocessing system, where both the channel coding and the linear MIMO transmit precoding components exploit the knowledge of the channel. Moreover, we also propose a novel technique, hereby referred to as pilot symbol assisted rateless (PSAR) coding, where a predetermined fraction of binary pilot symbols is interspersed with the channel-coded bits at the channel coding stage, instead of multiplexing the pilots with the data symbols at the modulation stage, as in classic pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM). We will subsequently demonstrate that the PSAR code-aided transmit preprocessing scheme succeeds in gleaning more beneficial knowledge from the inserted pilots, because the pilot bits are not only useful for estimating the channel at the receiver, but they are also beneficial in terms of significantly reducing the computational complexity of the rateless channel decoder.

Recently, substantial attention has been paid to compress the channel quality information feedback while preserving most of its relevant information, as required for Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). This paper compares the performance of some lossy feedback compression methods and, particularly, investigate the effect of bit allocation on their performance. Simulation results show that the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) approach, along with our proposed bit allocation method, leads to the best feedback compression performance.
