So far, many researches on network coding are performed with higher layer protocols such as MAC, routing, and flow control protocols without consideration of physical layer issues such as channel conditions of links. However, in wireless networks, the consideration of properties at the physical layer is important to improve system performance. Hence, in this paper, we study an opportunistic scheduling and adaptive modulation problem for wireless networks with network coding, which is a joint problem for MAC and physical layers. A similar problem was studied in considering an idealized system in which the data rate of each link is modeled with the Shannon capacity. They showed that to maximize the throughput of a transmission, the optimal subset of native packets that are encoded within a coded packet should be selected based on the channel condition at the destination for each native packet. Moreover, they also showed that it may not be the optimal selection to encode all possible native packets within a coded packet. In this paper, we consider a more realistic model than that of with practical modulation schemes such as M-PSK and MQAM. We show that the optimal policy that maximizes the throughput of a transmission is to encode all available native packets within a coded packet regardless of the channel condition at the destination for each native packet, which is a different conclusion from that of. However, we show that adaptive modulation, in which its constellation size in a coded packet is adjusted based on the channel condition of each destination node, provides a higher throughput than the scheme with fixed modulation, in which its constellation size is always fixed regardless of the channel condition at each destination node.

Quality of service (QoS) differentiation is one of the keys to success for WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) networks. Although the IEEE 802.16 standard issued some guidelines to design a QoS architecture, for the most part implementation details are left to manufacturers. Focus in this paper is on channel-aware scheduling policies to be implemented in the WiMAX Base Station for the delivery of downlink data traffic to fixed subscriber stations in a point-to-multipoint topology. This paper investigates on the effect of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes on the performance of the designed schedulers. Evaluation of the scheduling techniques will be based on their ability to provide QoS differentiation among traffic classes and fairness in the treatment of data flows in the same class. We expect that although AMC can be effectively used to dynamically adapt to variable channel conditions, it is not sufficient to guarantee inter-class traffic differentiation and intra-class fairness unless the scheduler also accounts for compensation of lost transmission opportunities of each single data flow.

In GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) mobile satellite system, subscribers could not be paged when the MES (Mobile Earth Station) is normally out of coverage area due to additional propagation path losses. To alert the subscribers in such situation, a more penetrative and computationally efficient coding modulation is needed. In this paper two kinds of orthogonal coded modulation, which are 6PSK based and BPSK based, are analyzed. Through compared with the common paging channel modulation method, and the performance analysis of them, we conclude that they can increase the SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) of actual transmitted information, which is greatly more than the SNR of data in the common paging channel. To be emphasized, we also confirm the predominance of 6PSK modulation.

Permutation codes are used in powerline communications (PLC), together with M-FSK modulation, to combat errors introduced by the channel. Synchronization errors are rare but can be catastrophic if not detected and corrected. In this paper, we propose a fast and simple decoding algorithm that uses a tree structure, called a permutation code tree, to detect and correct errors. The decoder is able to detect and correct substitution, insertion or deletion errors. The decoder has an error correction capability of one error per codeword.

IEEE 802.16e-based Mobile WiMAX has gained considerable popularity recently. However, there is no current simulation model that provides feature completeness and performance accuracy. In this paper we propose the design and implementation methodology of a complete, accurate, realistic and versatile simulation model to support Mobile WiMAX for the NS-2 simulation platform. In the proposed simulation model design, all major mandatory as well as many optional features in the IEEE 802.16e standard are implemented based on the enhancement of an open-source WiMAX model published by NIST. The major contributions of this work are: 1) the additional features integrated to the NIST model including OFDMA physical layer, 2) periodical ranging and Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) for robust link adaptation, 3) multi-hop support for large-scale test-bed simulation, as well as 4) the simulation model validation using WiMAX Forum certified devices. Versatile simulation scenarios are also designed to validate the implemented features.

Hierarchical modulation has advantage that has Improved efficiency. And advanced hierarchical modulation was proposed that enhanced layer symbols are rotated to improve system efficiency. But this conventional hierarchical modulation scheme has some problems such as reduction of minimum distance of inner symbols in constellation that have 2bit error. And only constellation rotation can not optimize hierarchical modulation system. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical modulation scheme that includes constellation rotation and symbol's image value interleaving. System can get SSD(signal space diversity) gain with constellation rotation and interleaving that brings efficiency improvement. Comparing with existing system by simulation, we can confirm excellence of proposed system.

A modified two-group resource allocation scheme is tested with three channel ordering schemes, a hard decision parallel interference cancellation (HDPIC) scheme and a successive interference cancellation (SIC) scheme to improve the data rate. Channel ordering ensures channels with the lowest energy requirement are loaded with the higher data rate in the two-group resource allocation scheme but may yield an increased computational load, which affects the feasibility of hardware implementation such as in Femtocells. Furthermore, channel ordering is also needed in SIC schemes to reduce error propagation loss, hence improving detection reliability.

In this paper, we propose an economics-based, distributed multicast scheme for wireless relay networks. Our goal is to construct efficient multicast routes that serve as many users as possible with the given bandwidth budget. The proposed scheme, called Price-Based Distributed Allocation (PBDA), allows each node to make decisions independently. Through analysis, we prove that the original problem is NP-complete, and show that our heuristic has polynomial-time complexity. We also conduct simulations to evaluate the scheme's performance. The results show that by utilizing relay nodes, PBDA can provide efficient and stable allocation of wireless resources. PBDA produces low-signaling overhead and can be deployed in a very efficient, high-performance manner.

We consider the joint channel and network code design for a half-duplex 4-node multiple-access relay system with two sources, one relay, and one destination. The relay combines the information from both sources and transmits it to the destination together with both sources. We consider two network coding schemes for information combining at the relay, namely, the superposition coding (SC) and the Raptor coding (RC). For both SC and RC, the profiles for joint channel and network coding are optimized based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) function analysis. For both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and block fading channels, the multiple-access relay system with optimized profiles exhibits significant performance gains over that employing the code profile optimized for either the single-user AWGN channel or the 2-user multiple-access channel.

A conventional OFDM system often poses a stringent linearity requirement to the transmitter, especially the radio-frequency power amplifier (RFPA), to maintain its bit error rate (BER). As a result, the output power from a RFPA is often limited, thus, the communication distance is compromised. With the deployment of WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), which is targeting at the mobile market, the communication distance is a concern. In this project, we propose to use Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) to adaptively control the digital modulation and the output power of a RFPA. When the AMC selects the modulation order with the coding rate to achieve the targeted BER, the output power of a RFPA can be increased as long as its Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is less than the required. Therefore, the communication distance of an OFDM system could be intelligently extended.
