The most common physical layer models for network simulations are the bit error rate and the SNR threshold model. In time-varying channels such as those experienced in vehicular networks, these models are assumed valid as long as the packet duration is less than the coherence time of the channel. The coherence time is a statistical measure of the channel invariance. It is independent of the signal parameters or the receiver structure. While it is convenient to decouple the system performance from the channel, this paper shows that this simplification may lead to inaccurate performance assessments and erroneous conclusions. This paper suggests a new metric, the normalized empirical coherence time (NETC), based on results from an extensive simulation campaign of a typical IEEE 802.11p system. The NETC delineates the minimum time (as a percentage of signal duration) over which the system achieves some performance threshold. The metric is explicitly a function of modulation, packet duration, and the traditional coherence time. This new metric could be used in place of the traditional coherence time as a constraint on the packet duration necessary to assume channel variation has negligible impact on performance.

One of the puzzling problems in mathematical biology is to show the existence of any form of error-correcting code in the DNA structure. Here we propose a model for the biological coding system similar to that of a digital communication system. This model consists of an encoder (a mapper and a BCH code over Z 4 ) and a modulator (genetic code). Here we show that DNA sequences including proteins and targeting sequences from different species with 63, 255, and 1023 nucleotides long were identified as codewords of Z 4 -linear codes.

We investigate modulation-based parallel delta-sigma (ΔΣ) converters for wideband A/D conversion applications. A code division parallel ΔΣ conversion method is proposed, where each path consisting of a ΔΣ modulator operates on an input signal modulated with different binary code. In contrast to standard Hadamard based modulation schemes, the design provides flexibility in choosing the number of parallel paths and the type of binary modulation sequences. We exploit the information-theoretical approach to design an iterative probabilistic decoding procedure for optimal decoding of the ΔΣ modulator outputs. To demonstrate the decoding method, a maximum a posteriori probability decoder for the first order ΔΣ modulator is developed. Simulation results verify the iterative decoding procedure, demonstrate the use of arbitrary number of paths, and show that the A/D converter based on pseudo-random sequences achieves improved spurious-free dynamic range.

In this contribution the number of activated MIMO layers and the number of bits per symbol are jointly optimized under the constraint of a given fixed data throughput and integrity. In general, non-frequency selective MIMO links have attracted a lot of research and have reached a state of maturity. By contrast, frequency selective MIMO links require substantial further research, where spatio-temporal vector coding (STVC) introduced by Raleigh seems to be an appropriate candidate for broadband transmission channels. In analogy to bit-interleaved coded irregular modulation, a broadband MIMO-BICM scheme is introduced, where different signal constellations and mappings are used within a single codeword. Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts are used for analyzing and optimizing the convergence behaviour of the iterative demapping and decoding. Our results show that in order to achieve the best bit-error rate, not necessarily all MIMO layers have to be activated.

Among the 4G technologies that managed to impose is the IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX technology. Mobile WiMAX promises to deliver high data rates over wide areas and at vehicular speeds of up to 120 km/h. The performance of such a system is greatly influenced by the type of application desired to be supported, either TCP-based (FTP, web browsing) or UDP-based (video streaming). The current paper proposes to analyze and compare the performance of a fully compliant Mobile WiMAX system operating at 2.3 GHz in a vehicular multipath fading channel (ITU M.1225 Veh.A). The results are generated on a link speed basis and are expressed in terms of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) switching points as well as the maximum achievable throughput and operating range. Different physical packet error rate (PER) requirements are considered, based on the quality of service (QoS) level imposed.

In this paper, we propose a generalized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmit preprocessing system, where both the channel coding and the linear MIMO transmit precoding components exploit the knowledge of the channel. Moreover, we also propose a novel technique, hereby referred to as pilot symbol assisted rateless (PSAR) coding, where a predetermined fraction of binary pilot symbols is interspersed with the channel-coded bits at the channel coding stage, instead of multiplexing the pilots with the data symbols at the modulation stage, as in classic pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM). We will subsequently demonstrate that the PSAR code-aided transmit preprocessing scheme succeeds in gleaning more beneficial knowledge from the inserted pilots, because the pilot bits are not only useful for estimating the channel at the receiver, but they are also beneficial in terms of significantly reducing the computational complexity of the rateless channel decoder.

In this paper, we analyze the impact of imperfect channel estimation on the performance of pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) used in a relay communication system with distributed space time block code (STBC) and amplify-and-forward protocol. We derive correlation coefficients between the channel coefficients and their estimates when the relay-to-destination link is either non-fading or fading, in terms of Doppler frequency, number of pilot symbols and SNR. This enables us to choose the optimum number of pilot symbols to compensate for the estimation error when the fading and Doppler effects are severe. Our performance analysis demonstrates that the presence of fading in the relay-to-destination link manifests itself by introducing additional Doppler frequency terms. Furthermore, we derive a tight lower bound for the bit error rate (BER) of BPSK modulation with channel estimation errors in terms of cross correlation coeffcients and the number of pilot symbols. Simulation results are also presented to validate our analytical results.

Femtocell networks can support iosolated coverage area and provide high data rates for mobile users by using wired Internet lines such as xDSL and cable TV networks for backhaul connectivity. Femtocell networks can be classified into 3GPP UMTS-based networks and 1x CDMA-based networks. Although 3GPP UMTS-based femtocells are standardized in the form of Home Node-B, 1x CDMA-based femtocells are not currently standardized. So, operators and communication system vendors are developing and launching such networks with proprietary specifications. From the viewpoint of an operator seeking to reduce its setup-costs, the adoption of the Femto Access GateWay (FAGW) is preferred. If femtocell networks based on the FAGW are adopted, an efficient signaling between the femtocells and the FAGW is required. The SIP-based signaling technique may suffer from an overload to support large number of femtocells. In this paper, we propose a novel signaling mechanism for FAGW and evaluate its performance in comparison with the SIP-based signaling method.

Steganography is a branch in the information hiding research area which aims to conceal data transmission between two parties. In this paper a new method based on predictive coding is proposed which employs Quantization Index modulation (QIM) for quantizing error values and embedding data simultaneously. Furthermore, a correction mechanism is proposed to preserve the histogram of the cover image and make it resistant against histogram-based attacks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, several experiments on gray-level images are carried out and compared with two prominent methods called Jsteg and Steganography Based on Predictive coding (SBPC). The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an efficient trade-off among imperceptibility, hiding capacity, compression ratio and robustness against malicious attacks.

In this paper, we tried to use satellite link for providing IPTV services. The common satellite link uses fixed-size packets as MPEG-2 TS which has much redundancy. If a satellite communication system support IPTV, it must adopt ACM/VCM(ACM, adaptive coding and modulation, VCM, variable coding and modulation) mode for reducing fixed size packet redundancies. This paper describes the requirements for IPTV service using satellite communication systems.
