In this paper, we analyze and simulate performance of space time block coded (STBC) binary pulse amplitude modulation-direct sequence (BPAM-DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems with double binary turbo code in indoor environments. The indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) channel, which is proposed as a UWB indoor channel model by IEEE ***3a. From simulation results, it is shown that the STBC scheme does not have an influence on improving bit error probability performance of the PAM-DS UWB systems. It is also shown that the double binary turbo coding scheme offers considerable coding gain compared with an uncoded system according as the number of iterations increases.

Wavelet modulation (WM) has been investigated in the past as multi-rate transmission technique on channels unknown in time or bandwidth. Such a channel conditions are common in Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) networks where secondary users aim to opportunistically transmit alongside primaries. In this paper, WM is opportunely designed to exploit channel opportunities avoiding interferences with the primary users of the spectrum. Unequal power allocation is performed according to both channel availability and data sensitivity to channel errors: zero power (i.e., carrier suppression) is assigned to potentially harmful wavelets whereas the power budget is distributed on safe wavelets in order to optimize the minimum square error between transmitted and received data. As to optimization Genetic Algorithms (GA) are used due to their capacity to solve complex problems with reduced convergence time and predefined accuracy when tailored to specific cases.

This paper introduces a novel multicarrier system called the BPSK modulated parallel combinatory / half-symbol multicarrier modulation (PC/HS-MCM) system by combining the BPSK modulated HS-MCM system and the parallel combinatory code. The proposed system can achieve twice bandwidth efficiency (BWE) than that of the BPSK modulated PC-OFDM system by sending a half time-domain BPSK-modulated PC-OFDM waveform. We propose two types of demodulation algorithm for this system, that is, orthogonality demodulation and M-algorithm demodulation. Orthogonality demodulation can recover the orthogonality between the subcarriers with 3 dB BER performance deterioration. The M-algorithm demodulation can realize a BER performance improvement with a moderate computational complexity.

An LDPC code is proposed for flash memories based on rank modulation. In contrast to previous approaches, this enables the use of long ECCs with fixed-length modulation codes. For ECC design, the rank modulation scheme is treated as part of an equivalent channel. A probabilistic model of the equivalent channel is derived and a simple high-SNR approximation is given. LDPC codes over integer rings and finite fields are designed for the approximate channel and a low-complexity symbol-flipping verification-based (SFVB) message-passing decoding algorithm is proposed to take advantage of the channel structure. Density evolution (DE) is used to calculate decoding thresholds and simulations are used to compare the low-complexity decoder with sum-product decoding.

In this paper, multi-antennas transmission techniques, based on spatial multiplexing and space diversity, are considered as means to enhance the performance of WLANs systems. Link adaptation is introduce in order to determine the most appropriate PHY configuration in terms of achievable throughput and error performance, for different configuration of transmit and receive antennas, modulation scheme and coding rates. The physical layer parameters selection is done according to the application requirements, in the attempt to efficiently use the available radio resources.

In this paper, we propose to approach the capacity limit for channels with fast phase variation by using a serial concatenation scheme with an outer turbo encoder and an inner block modulator. A distinct feature of the proposed transmission scheme is that coded symbols from adjacent codewords are interleaved into the same input vectors of the block modulator. At the receiver, we not only perform the iterative noncoherent demodulation and decoding algorithm, but also exchange extrinsic information between adjacent codewords due to the codeword interleaved structure. It is shown through the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart that the resultant block demodulator and channel decoder can match well with each other, and can achieve a near-capacity performance.

Abstract-It is known that multiple-symbol differential detection can enhance the performance of coded differential phase shift keying (DPSK) systems over a correlated flat fading channel, but have exponential complexity. In this paper, the proposed scheme, Forward/Backward-MSDSD (FB-MSDSD), consisted of MAP-MSDSD, channel estimation and soft demodulation can reduce the complexity by dividing the original detection interval into forward and backward processes. The simulation runs show that compared with SISO MSDSD scheme, the proposed scheme has similar bit error rate but lower complexity.

Classical systems using hierarchical modulation (such as DVB-SH) involve a "high-priority" (HP) and a "low-priority" (LP) bit stream that are separately and independently encoded before being mapped on non-uniformly spaced constellation points, leading to different levels of error protection. However, an inherent drawback of this scheme is the severe performance degradation of the less protected LP stream. In this paper, we propose a concatenated encoding scheme that mixes the two streams in order to make the encoding of the LP stream dependent on the well protected HP stream. Consequently, at the receiver side, the reliable information on HP bits provided by the HP decoder is naturally involved in the decoding process of the LP stream and acts as "soft pilots". We have exploited this feature inside a soft decoding mechanism in order to improve the LP decoding performance while keeping the HP decoding performance unchanged. Numerical results presented in the case of the DVB-SH standard show that the proposed system outperforms the classical approach in terms of LP bit error rate without a considerable increase in the receiver complexity.

In this paper, different correlation techniques (narrow correlator, double delta correlator and subcarrier processing) that can be applied to the new Galileo alternate binary offset carrier AltBOC(15,10) modulation are discussed with respect to their functionality, implementation, and multipath mitigation performance. Moreover, effects of the receiver parameters (precorrelation bandwidth, spacing between correlators) on the ranging errors are also presented. The performance of the multipath mitigation concepts is illustrated in 2D and 3D multipath error envelopes assuming multipath scenarios with one and two multipath components and constant signal attenuation factors. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the performance of the AltBOC modulation and the effect of multipath on code and carrier measurements for different multipath environments, and thus help the receiver designers to select the best correlation technique for their particular applications.

This paper presents the analysis and implementation of a new communication system, which uses the DC link cable as a communication channel to reduce electrical interfaces and save cables. The channel characteristics are investigated to determine the carrier frequency and the bandwidth. To deal with the disturbance and signal fading, coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) is used as means of modulation/demodulation. A field test system is established. The test results show that it achieves a high performance with regard to the industrial standards.
