Codes for rank modulation have been recently proposed as a means of protecting flash memory devices from errors. We study basic coding theoretic problems for such codes, representing them as subsets of the set of permutations of n elements equipped with the Kendall tau distance. We derive several lower and upper bounds on the size of codes. These bounds enable us to establish the exact scaling of the size of optimal codes for large values of n. We also show the existence of codes whose size is within a constant factor of the sphere packing bound for any fixed number of errors.

Link evaluation is very important to system level simulation. Current algorithms for link evaluation show pretty good accuracy for wireless system with linear detections. However, when it comes to MIMO-OFDM system with ML Detection, problems still exists. This paper proposes an Extended Received Block Information Rate algorithm for link evaluation, which is deduced from the view of information and detecting theory. Accuracy and universality of this algorithm for MIMO-OFDM system with ML detection are highlighted. Simulation results show that, comparing to current algorithms for link evaluation, the proposed ERBIR algorithm obtains better accuracy and universality.

Iterative decoding is an efficient technique to overcome the disadvantage of Bit-Interleaved Coded modulation (BICM) over AWGN channels. In order to reduce the unnecessary iterations of the iterative decoding process, stopping criteria technique has been introduced. Since the iterative process of Bit-Interleaved Coded modulation with Iterative Decoding (BICM-ID) is proceeded between the demapper and the SISO decoder, not as the one of turbo-decoder which is proceeded between two component decoders, the minimum iteration number of BICM-ID is 2 when using conventional stopping criteria iterative schemes. To minimize the overall iteration number of the iterative decoding process and decrease the complexity of BICM-ID receiver, three simple iterative decoding schemes for BICM-ID, called simple CE (S-CE), simple SCR (S-SCR) and simple HDA (S-HDA) respectively, are proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes perform similar to the corresponding conventional ones and require less complexity, meanwhile, these proposed schemes perform almost the same as the Fixed iteration scheme with much less iterations. A GENIE scheme is included as the limit of all possible stopping criteria.

In this paper, we consider a broadcast transmission from a source to multiple destinations with an OFDM-based system. In order to improve the broadcast services of a cellular system, we consider the use of relays with Dynamic Decode and Forward protocols allowing the source to ignore the existence of relays in the system. A new algorithm executed at the relay is proposed. It allows for maximizing the diversity order at the destinations side by selecting the best relaying protocol and modulation size as function of the relay correct decoding time. No feedback is assumed on any link between the source, relays and destinations.

We study the rate adaptation of a combined system with Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) in the presence of Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) errors. An average BLock Error Rate (BLER) is imposed to maintain a target error rate. We formulate a generic average throughput expression that accommodates the possible CQI errors. The generic expression is adapted to different forms according to practical scenarios. According to our results, CQI errors can significantly degrade the average throughput of a pure AMC system, especially for the CQI errors generated by user mobility. Surprisingly, we found that it is harder to recover the loss by using HARQ when the CQI errors are caused by channel estimation errors. For the CQI errors generated by user mobility, most of the loss is recovered with simply one retransmission.

The IEEE 802.11 standard supports a variety of modulation and coding schemes (MCSs). In 802.11-based wireless mesh networks (WMNs) it is hence possible to adapt the link rate to the channel conditions. In particular, smaller link rates may be accepted for an increased spatial reuse. In an earlier study, we showed that this effect is suitable for increasing the max-min fair share throughput in a WMN operating with a TDMA channel access scheme. In this work, we investigate if the use of smaller link rates is also suitable for increasing the throughput of a WMN using a contention-based channel access mechanism. For this purpose, we analytically derive a guideline for link rate assignment as protection against hidden nodes and compute the costs and benefits of this mechanism in terms of MAC layer efficiency. A simulation study shows however that in a medium-sized WMN this strategy is less advantageous than assumed and allows to give advices for practical mesh network deployments.

In this study we analyze the synergy effects among ARQ and Hybrid ARQ with rate-adaptive mechanisms. We present several coding and decoding schemes and link adaptation techniques for rate-adaptive transmission, designed to combat noise, and we discuss their performance. We describe approaches for searching and selecting the best modulation and coding scheme (MCS) based on channel quality information (CQI). Hybrid ARQ using convolutional and punctured convolutional codes is used with variable re-transmission packet size and code rate according to CQI. Attractive simulation results are issued and they may be used as a basis for performance trade-off.

Common auction formats are well-understood, relatively simple mechanism which have long been used for allocating an indivisible good to the party that values it the most, for such reasons as speed of allocation, discovery of the true ¿value¿ of the object, and fraud prevention. Various auction schemes have been proposed for the allocation of telecommunication resources. The Dutch auction (the price progressively falls until a participant buys the object) has several major virtues: (i) a bid-processing protocol that automatically and simply prioritises the highest bid(s); (ii) possibility of distributive (auctioneer-free) implementation for synchronised terminals; (iii) confirmation of transmitter-receiver pairs at auction time, with smooth continuation if the pair is infeasible; (iv) exceptional signalling economy (the only strictly necessary signal is the winning bid). Below, we utilise this auction for sub-channel allocation in the access-point to terminal link of an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) network. Concurrently, we utilise a pricing scheme for power allocation. This results in a relatively simple, decentralised scheme for sub-channel and power allocation. Secure software inside each terminal may record transactions for eventual payment collection, or the auction can be interpreted as a prioritised decentralised allocation algorithm, without real money exchange.

This paper presents a simple methodology for the design of a highly efficient PA in the context of multiradio devices. This PA belongs to the radiofrequency reconfigurable part within a transmitter. Our goal is to improve the PA efficiency over the bandwidth. The method is based on the extraction of the transistor's non-linear output parameters and the optimisation of a given class E topology to an ideal impedance load. Herein, the method is illustrated by an integrated design using between 2 and 4 GHz and the results of the simulations (in terms of efficiency) agree well with the transient simulation and the S-Parameters optimisation. Considerations are given for the complete development of this design and the interest for future multiband front end designs.

Rateless codes are recently-proposed erasure correction codes. To apply rateless codes over wireless communication channels, a physical-layer forward error correction (FEC) code, such as a convolutional code, is usually used to correct errors within each packet while Raptor codes are used in the application layer to correct erased packets. Traditionally, the physical-layer modulation and coding rate are chosen to guarantee an overall packet error rate to be below a certain level. However, such a choice does not always provide the best overall system performance. This paper proposes a cross-layer scheme to optimize physical layer modulation and coding rate to maximize system throughput. Both slow and fast fading channels are considered. For slow fading channels, cross-layer adaptive modulation and coding schemes are also proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed cross-layer schemes outperform traditional schemes significantly in terms of system throughput. The results also indicate that in many situations, allowing for more packet error correction in the application-layer through erasure codes can be more efficient than ensuring a low packet error rate using a low-rate physical-layer code.
