Power efficiency of noncoherent receivers for impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmission systems can significantly be improved, on the one hand, by employing multiple-symbol differential detection (MSDD), and, on the other hand, by providing reliability information to the subsequent channel decoder. In this paper, we combine these two techniques. Incorporating the computation of the soft information into a single-tree-search sphere decoder (SD), the application of this soft-output MSDD in a typical IR-UWB system imposes only a moderate complexity increase at, however, improved performance over hard-output MSDD, and in particular, over conventional symbol-by-symbol noncoherent differential detection.

In this paper, we study opportunistic multicast scheduling (OMS) in a wireless network with a central base station (BS) broadcasting a common packet to multiple users with different instantaneous channel conditions. Our objective is to minimize the broadcast latency, which is defined as the total transmission time required for all intended users in a multicast group to receive the packet. Based on the instantaneous channel conditions, BS can send a packet at different transmission rates. Sending at a higher rate allows a shorter packet transmission time, but only a limited number of users with sufficient channel quality can receive the packet. To reach all users in a multicast group, the packet must be transmitted multiple times. We can see that the broadcast latency depends on the transmission rate used and the number of transmissions required. In this paper, we formulate the problem of minimizing broadcast latency as a dynamic programming problem, and a close-loop optimal opportunistic multicast scheduling scheme (OOMS) is derived.

Bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) because of its improved diversity over fast fading channels is an attractive transmission scheme for future wireless systems. For coded BICM systems, receivers need to employ max log MAP demodulators (demappers) that calculate soft-decision metrics i.e. log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for the decoder. The complexity of the calculation of these LLRs is exponential in the number of bits per symbol and moreover for systems exploiting spatial dimension (MIMO), the complexity further increases exponentially in the number of transmit antennas. In this paper we propose matched filter (MF) based low complexity max log MAP bit metrics for BICM single input single output (SISO) and low dimensional BICM MIMO systems using Gray encoded M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) alphabets. For SISO systems, the maximum likelihood (ML) detector needs computation and comparison of minimum distances between the received symbol and M constellation points on the complex plane for the calculation of each LLR. In this paper we show that these LLRs can be computed precisely from the MF output and therefore do not necessitate any minimum distance calculations. For low dimensional BICM MIMO systems, we further propose a MF based bit metric which successfully trims down one complex dimension of the system thereby reducing complexity. Both these metrics substantially reduce the number of calculations needed for each LLR without compromising the performance and MF being an integral part of all receiver structures facilitates their hardware implementation. Simulation results over Rayleigh fading channels verify similar performance of the simplified metrics as those of the original metrics but with a significant reduction in the complexity.

This paper discusses the resource and power requirements of baseband signal processing circuitry to process new Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals. The large signal bandwidth, multiple longer spreading codes and the split-spectrum modulations demand wider registers and wider accumulators at higher operating frequencies compared to the baseband hardware of the existing Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 Coarse/Acquisition (C/A) signal. Some of the signals with the memory spreading codes have a completely new requirement of up to 0.5 M memory bits. Implementation of the core baseband signal processing blocks in FPGA hardware reveals up to three times the resource requirement and up to thirty seven times the power consumption for high-end signals compared to the core baseband module of the existing L1 C/A signal.

Teaching mathematical intensive engineering based courses to undergraduate Information Technology students poses a great challenge to instructors. In this paper we provide an efficient and effective method for teaching digital and analog modulation to undergraduate students enrolled in an Information Technology program which does not require a strong foundation in mathematics as in the case of an Engineering program. The used approach utilizes Matlab packages, Simulink, and Communication Blockset to simulate analog and digital modulation techniques avoiding the derivation of any mathematics formulations and without coding. A survey that was distributed to Information Technology students who were taught using this approach showed a high level of satisfaction in understanding all modulation concepts.

This paper presents the first analysis on the energy efficiency of LT codes with Non-Coherent M-ary Frequency Shift Keying (NC-MFSK), known as green modulation, in a proactive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) over Rayleigh flat-fading channels with path-loss. The current analysis is based on realistic parameters in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard including the effect of channel bandwidth and active mode duration. We also present the first study on the LT code rate and coding gain characteristics achieving a given Bit Error Rate (BER), and their effects on the total energy consumption for different transmission distances d. Experimental results show that among various channel coding schemes, the optimized LT coded NC-MFSK is the most energy-efficient scheme for distance d greater than the pre-determined threshold level d T , where the optimization is performed over coding and modulation parameters. While for dT, uncoded NC-MFSK outperforms coded schemes.

Nonlinear operations are usually regarded as something undesirable that should be avoided in digital communication systems since they lead to performance degradation, namely spectral widening and decrease in power efficiency, for a given modulations. In this paper we show that the adoption of appropriate nonlinear devices can allow an improvement on the performance of some modulation schemes, either for OQPSK-type schemes (Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) or TC-OQAM (Trellis Coded Offset Quadrature Amplitude modulation). We present an analytical characterization of these signals after a bandpass memoryless nonlinear device. It is shown that an encoder followed by a nonlinear amplifier can be viewed as a serial concatenated coding scheme and the coding gain of such scheme can be improved relatively to the linear transmission scheme.

Iterative Decision Directed Channel Estimation (DDCE) scheme is proposed in this paper for bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM)-based MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed scheme employs Variable Step Size Normalized Least Mean Square (VSSNLMS) algorithm to implement its temporary Channel Transfer Function (CTF) Estimator and Adaptive Channel Impulse Response (CIR) predictor modules, while Fast Data Projection Method (FDPM) algorithm is employed to track the time domain CIR of the MIMO channel. The proposed iterative DDCE operates in an iterative mode in conjunction with MIMO demappers and the Turbo decoder at receiver of the MIMO-OFDM system. The achievable performances of the proposed scheme in terms of both mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) are presented. Comparative performances between the DDCE scheme employing FDPM algorithm and another one employing deflated Projection Approximation Subspace Tracking (PASTd) algorithm are also given. The simulations results presented indicate better performances of the proposed scheme.

A digital baseband receiver ASIC that supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Evolved EDGE is implemented in 0.13 ¿m CMOS technology. The design centers around two main blocks: an adaptive channel equalizer processes GMSK/8PSK/16QAM and 32 QAM modulated signals and a flexible channel decoder supports convolutional and turbo codes, as required for Evolved EDGE. The receiver occupies 2.0 mm 2 and the average power consumption during burst reception and processing is less than 5 mW in each of the modes.

Link evaluation is very important to system level simulation. Current algorithms for link evaluation show pretty good accuracy for wireless system with linear detections. However, when it comes to MIMO-OFDM system with ML Detection, problems still exists. This paper proposes an Extended Received Block Information Rate algorithm for link evaluation, which is deduced from the view of information and detecting theory. Accuracy and universality of this algorithm for MIMO-OFDM system with ML detection are highlighted. Simulation results show that, comparing to current algorithms for link evaluation, the proposed ERBIR algorithm obtains better accuracy and universality.
