An all-lag reference-code correlator generates an all-lag even- or odd-correlation vector at a rate equal to the rate of incoming data samples. Direct implementation of an all-lag reference-code correlator requires N parallel correlators, and the resultant degree of complexity is of the order N/sup 2/, where N is the length of the reference code. In a previous paper, a recursive form for generating all-lag even correlations was derived. In this paper, we derive the recursive form for generating all-lag odd correlations. It is shown that the corresponding correlator can be implemented with a complexity approximately equal to that of a single parallel correlator. That is, the degree of complexity of the proposed recursive all-lag reference-code correlator is of the order N. Thus, substantial reduction in the implementation complexity is achieved.

Trellis coded modulation (TCM) and serially concatenated trellis coded modulation (SCTCM) schemes are studied for hybrid in-band-on-channel (IBOC) systems that broadcast digital audio signals simultaneously with analog amplitude modulation (AM) programs in the AM bands. We compare the performance and complexity of SCTCM with those of TCM and the previously suggested multilevel concatenated Reed-Solomon (RS)/convolutional (CC) codes, and show that by using SCTCM, an efficient modulation scheme can be obtained for applications such as IBOC-AM broadcasting, with the price of increased block length and complexity. However, since decoding delay is not critical for digital audio broadcasting, SCTCM is a viable choice for these systems. We also show that the less complex TCM scheme performs better than the multilevel RS/CC concatenated schemes at the bit-error-rate of interest in these systems. Furthermore, symbol-by-symbol reliability can be derived from the TCM decoders so that sophisticated error mitigation or concealment algorithms for the audio decoders may be designed to optimize the decoded audio quality.

A direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) multi-carrier system with minimum-shift-keying (MSK) modulation is proposed. Transmitted data bits are serial to parallel converted into M parallel streams. The bits on each stream are transmitted on S carriers with successively non-overlapping spectra using MSK modulation. Then the modulated streams are spread by a pseudo random (PN) code with a suitable chip rate. The resulting signal will have overlapping spectra. It is shown that the condition of single path fading for each carrier can be achieved by increasing the number of carriers and the separation between successive carriers. Also frequency diversity is achievable for the same bit transmitted on different carriers. The system is analyzed with one-bit differential detector in a static Rayleigh-fading multi-path channel. A simple formula for the probability of error is derived. MSK with one-bit differential detector has the advantage of simpler implementation than BPSK with CMF since the exact frequency and phase of the carrier are not required in the differential detector.

Wireless communication systems are disturbed by multipath effects which alter widely the signal amplitude. In such cases coding and diversity schemes are usually employed to lower error rates. It is well known that space-time encoded trellis modulation schemes achieve good performance for transmission through slow fading with perfect CSI. Design criteria used to build space-time codes over slow fading is maximizing rank and determinant from matrices made with codewords pairs. Defining a small size encoder structure and making an exhaustive search over all possible codes with that size, optimum encoders were found. Simulations results are displayed in terms of bit error rate over channels subjected to Doppler and ISI effects.

A technique for combining Huffman code, row and column array (RAC) codes and phase/frequency modulation in order to reduce redundancy, provide error protection and simultaneously to optimise channel bandwidth is presented. It is shown that this scheme provides a reduction in overall complexity as compared to that employing a demodulator followed by a trellis decoder of RAC code and a Huffman decoder. The trellis of the combined codes employing BFSK/MPSK modulation are designed and implemented and their error performances are compared with those employing coded as well as uncoded MPSK modulation. The proposed block coded modulation (BCM) scheme is suitable for both data transmission and information storage.

Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is well-known for achieving coding gain in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels without sacrificing additional bandwidth. Block-coded modulation (BCM) has been studied as a counterpart to TCM. In this paper, we consider the possibility of applying BCM to a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel with soft-output equalizers. A comparison of error performance between TCM and BCM has been made. Our results show that BCM schemes have comparable performance to TCM schemes with less decoding complexity and the relative performance among coding schemes depends on the type of equalizers.

The authors previously presented a new space-time architecture combining generalized layered transmission, advanced iterative multi-user detection techniques, and space-time code design that provides superior performance compared to the layered architectures proposed by Foschini (1996) and Tarokh et al. (see IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, ***-44, p.744-65, 1998). We discuss the design of algebraic space-time codes for layered and non-layered architectures. We present new constructions for the quasi-static and block fading channels that extend to the diagonal transmission architecture proposed for differentially coherent space-time coding.

A generic M-ary continuous phase modulation (CPM) scheme, with a modulation index of h=1/M, can be modeled by a continuous-phase encoder (CPE) followed by a memoryless modulator (MM), where the CPE is linear over the ring of integers module M. By designing a channel encoder (CE), which is a convolutional encoder, to operate over the same ring of integers module M, the CE and the CPE can be combined to create another convolutional encoder called an extended CE. In this paper, a 1/2 rate CE over the ring of integers modulo 4 is combined with a 4-ary CPM scheme whose modulation index is h= 1/4 . Using this trellis coded modulation design, the paper explains the design of an effective serially concatenated channel coded system, where the inner encoder is the extended CE and the outer encoder is another convolutional encoder. Simulations show that good results are obtainable by concatenating an outer quaternary convolutional encoder with the quaternary extended CE.
