In this paper a hybrid binary frequency shift keying/multiple phase shift keying (BFSK/MPSK) modulation technique employing generalised array codes (GAC) and trellis decoding is proposed. The performances of the GAC employing the hybrid BFSK/MPSK are compared with those employing BPSK, MPSK schemes and the corresponding uncoded MPSK scheme.

In this paper, a communication scheme based on Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) signal with trellis-coded modulation is presented. The coded/modulation scheme is an attractive technique for transmission of digital information over a bandwidth and power-limited channel. The coding gain of trellis codes provides power efficiency, and GMSK provides bandwidth efficiency due to the constant-envelope properties and good spectral features like all the CPM signals. In the receiver we propose an optimum detection Viterbi algorithm. Optimal trellis codes for the scheme can be found with computer simulation.

A demodulator circuit for ASK 10% modulated and NRZ coded signals used in contactless chip-cards is presented. The main problem is that very small signal variations have to be detected, while the dynamic range of the signal is very large due to movement of the chip-card inside the field of the card operating device. The dynamic range of the signal has to be adapted and the demodulator must be able to distinguish between movement of the card and real modulation.

Current vision systems are designed to perform in clear weather. Needless to say, in any outdoor application, there is no escape from "bad" weather. Ultimately, computer vision systems must include mechanisms that enable them to function (even if somewhat less reliably) in the presence of haze, fog, rain, hail and snow. We begin by studying the visual manifestations of different weather conditions. For this, we draw on what is already known about atmospheric optics. Next, we identify effects caused by bad weather that can be turned to our advantage. Since the atmosphere modulates the information carried from a scene point to the observer it can be viewed as a mechanism of visual information coding. Based on this observation, we develop models and methods for recovering pertinent scene properties, such as three-dimensional structure, from images taken under poor weather conditions.

Erasure error correction based on List-SOVA has been applied to partial-response channel code for high-density magnetic recording. Soft-output information extracted from modified EEPR4ML is used. To achieve as high a total coding rate as possible, a 16/17MTR(3;11) code and a rate 544/561 cyclic redundancy check code (CRCC) are combined. CRCC-false-correction deteriorates erasure error correction performance. To solve this problem, a method for detecting CRCC-false-correction has been proposed. Simulation results show that our method can reduce block error rates to 1/10 the case without erasure error correction at the user density of 2.8.

The performance of turbo codes decoded by the soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) with quantized channel measurements is investigated in this paper. Implementation of SOVA, whose advantages are its simplicity compared to the MAP algorithm and its ease of implementation, only requires minor modification from the Viterbi decoder chips. However, quantisation loss due to hardware implementation has not been thoroughly addressed previously and is discussed in this paper. Due to over-estimation of reliability values by SOVA, soft-limiting (clipping) of reliability values can provide some gain which can compensate for the loss due to quantization and, in certain cases, provide performance that is close to MAP decoding.

This paper describes the configuration and experimental results of a packet mode OFDM modem which is developed for 5 GHz high-data-rate wireless LANs. The prototype, implemented by programmable gate array devices, realizes 1/4 scale operation of 20 Mbit/s transmission. It employs DQPSK-OFDM modulation using 48 subcarriers with convolutional coding of rate 3/4 and it also employs a burst synchronization circuit which performs symbol timing detection and carrier frequency offset compensation. The experimental results show that it achieves good packet error rate performance (0.1% or less) in multipath channels with RMS delay spread of 100 ns.

Computer simulation of sinusoidal pulse width modulated voltage source inverter fed 4.1 kV, 4-pole induction motor performance operating at constant volts/hertz is presented using a conventional per-phase equivalent circuit. A sinusoidal pulse width modulation strategy for the inverter was introduced into the motor performance analysis program allowing the computation of the drive system performance over the entire speed range. The deep bar effect of the rotor is incorporated. Harmonic motor losses are evaluated, compared to a loss model. Various performance characteristics of a variable speed induction motor are plotted.

Incremental redundancy (IR) is a technique that can dynamically adapt the effective code rate to channel conditions. It accomplishes this by incrementally transmitting additional redundancy until the information can be decoded successfully. IR is especially suitable for wireless data services, which can tolerate variable transmission delay. We propose an enhancement to current IR approaches, which uses a special transmission mode, "mode 0". The basic idea of mode 0 is to temporarily delay a user's transmission if its link quality is lower than a pre-determined threshold. Mode 0 reduces unnecessary retransmissions and therefore, uses the resource more efficiently. Using simulations, we show that introducing a mode 0 improves the system throughput and delay performance. To implement mode 0, link quality measurements are required, which increases system complexity. However, in light of the performance gain provided by mode 0, this might be a good tradeoff.

Previously, the authors introduced a novel algorithm for long range prediction of flat fading channels that can reliably predict future fading coefficients far beyond the coherence time. This prediction capability provides enabling technology for power and bandwidth efficient adaptive modulation and coding methods. In this paper, we extend our results to the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) channels. It is demonstrated that frequency selective channels encountered in CDMA can also be predicted far ahead, and that the proposed prediction methods can be combined with RAKE receivers. In addition, we utilize prediction to improve performance of the selective transmitter diversity system proposed for the third generation CDMA.
