Iterative (turbo) decoding of a coded, interleaved continuous-phase modulated (CPM) waveform is presented. The transmitter consists of a rate-2/3 convolutional encoder followed by an interleaver, and an 8-ary continuous phase modulator. At the receiver, soft output a posteriori probability algorithms for the convolutional code and the CPM waveform iteratively refine their probability estimates. Current simulation results show a 2.5 dB SNR improvement (at 10/sup -5/ bit-error rate) over trellis-coded CPM (TCCPM) with a 99% bandwidth efficiency of 1.24 bps/Hz. The detector has a complexity of approximately 4.5 times that of the TCCPM system.

In this paper, we present our researches on wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) multimedia wireless system which is sponsored by Communication Subjects of High Technology R&D Programme of China. We propose a W-CDMA modulation scheme of variable transmission rate, partial-balance power control algorithm, and wireless access method for variable access rate. The proposed algorithm integrates traffic priority ranking and transmit power control and access information rate control. Our simulation results show that the partial-balance power control algorithm can render the special QoS requirements of traffic with higher priority orders guaranteed and maximize the CIR of the traffic with lower priority orders. Access rate adaption provides higher channel usage and more successful access probability than the fixed access rate algorithm. Based on the above techniques, we also develop a experimental system which consists of base station and multimedia terminals.

Previously, the authors introduced a novel algorithm for long range prediction of flat fading channels that can reliably predict future fading coefficients far beyond the coherence time. This prediction capability provides enabling technology for power and bandwidth efficient adaptive modulation and coding methods. In this paper, we extend our results to the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) channels. It is demonstrated that frequency selective channels encountered in CDMA can also be predicted far ahead, and that the proposed prediction methods can be combined with RAKE receivers. In addition, we utilize prediction to improve performance of the selective transmitter diversity system proposed for the third generation CDMA.

In this communication we consider the use of an hybrid modulation method called amplitude and pulse-position modulation (APPM) in infrared WLAN. In this hybrid method the information is conveyed both in the position and amplitude of a pulse. The bandwidth efficiency and the capacity of this new modulation scheme are derived and compared against pulse-position modulation (PPM), which allows us to conclude that APPM can be used to improve the performance of PPM without bandwidth expansion, using trellis-coded modulation (TCM) codes. We also derive the best trellis codes for some A/spl times/2-APPM, and the results show that non-negligible coding gains can be obtained with trellis codes of moderate complexity.

Multilevel modulation codes for partial response (PR) channels can be constructed using a structured set partition (SSP) of channel output words, and a set of block codes with different error correcting capabilities. We present SSP for the classical and modified E/sup 2/PR4 channels. The coding gain 3.5 dB can be achieved at the linear density 2.8 for ME/sup 2/PR channel with the target [5,4,-3,-4,-2] given by Sawaguchi et al. (see Proc. GLOBCOM-98, 1998).

The field of space-time coded modulation (STCM) has recently attracted interest as a means of improving link reliability in mobile environments. It has been shown that these space-time multiple-antenna systems provide very high capacity when compared to single antenna systems in a Rayleigh fading environment. Specifically for the forward link, space-time coded transmit diversity should be incorporated into the wireless communication system in order to take full advantage of the combined space- (multiple-transmit antennas) and time- (forward error correction coding) diversity scheme. In this paper, we adopt an heuristic approach to the design and evaluation of diagonally layered STCM schemes by utilising classical multiple-trellis coded-modulation (MTCM) techniques. We focus mainly on the construction of simple 4-state diagonally layered space-time convolutionally coded systems. The designed STCM systems will be used in a comparative performance investigation with the originally proposed STCM codes. Computer simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the code designs on flat Rayleigh fading channels.

A multiuser OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) downlink transmission with adaptive modulation is considered. Assuming that the base station knows the instantaneous channel gains for all users, we propose an algorithm which minimizes the total transmit power by assigning, to each user, a set of subcarriers within an OFDM symbol and by determining, for each sub-carrier, the number of bits to be transmitted and the power level used. We obtained the performance of our proposed algorithm in a multiuser frequency selective fading environment with various root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread. The results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms conventional OFDM systems with or without optimal bit allocation using TDMA or FDMA as multiaccess techniques. We have also quantified the improvement in terms of the required transmit power, for fixed bit error rate.

We present a combined method of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with coordinate interleaving and a rotated constellation, also known as signal space diversity. The diversity order can be increased to twice the diversity order of BICM, which is the minimum Hamming distance of a code. This greatly improves the performance over Rayleigh fading while preserving minimum squared Euclidean distance of BICM. Our simulation results show that the new combined scheme greatly outperforms BICM and bit-interleaved I-Q TCM as well as coordinate-interleaved TCM over Rayleigh fading channels. We first describe BICM and signal space diversity schemes, then follow with the design of BICM with signal space diversity. The complexity reduction technique is also investigated.

Coded modulation for differentially encoded PSK with non-coherent reception on flat fading channels is considered. We derive theoretical limits on the performance and show how to design multilevel coding schemes and bit-interleaved coded modulation. Since Gray labeling is not possible for multiple symbol differential detection and PSK constellations, bit-interleaved coded modulation exhibits severe degradation compared to the multilevel coding approach. By means of simulations, where turbo codes are used as component codes, the theoretical considerations are confirmed and we show how close theoretical limits of differentially encoded PSK transmission over flat fading channels can be approached by applying properly designed coded modulation schemes.

In future packet based wireless communication systems, transmission in the downlink will often dominate the traffic load. High bit-rate applications like WWW-browsing, file transfer, and full motion video will impose strong requirements on the system capacity. An obstacle in this context is the time-variability of the channel: for mobile users, frequently occurring fading dips will cause unnecessary and capacity degrading retransmissions. To achieve a high throughput also over fading channels, adaptive methods for adjustment of, for example, the modulation alphabet, and the coding complexity, can be used. The idea is to make efficient use of the bits: whenever the channel conditions are adequate, transmission of redundant bits should be avoided. In this paper we investigate the effect of adaptive modulation, along with time-slot scheduling, in a scenario involving several mobiles and one base station. We found that the bit error rate can be kept at an adjustable low level, well suited for forward error correction (FEC) codes. Moreover, the more mobiles that share a frequency channel, the more efficiently the scheduler uses the channel bandwidth.
