A coded transponder was developed for operation in C-band and verified using the SAR sensor of the Active Microwave Instruments (AMI) on the ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites. The coded transponder uses signal modulation techniques which affect the SAR signal in both range and azimuth and decouples the transponder signal from the background signal. Encoding adds additional features without losing any of the advantages transponders have over passive targets.

Interleaved trellis coded systems with continuous phase modulation (TCCPM) are considered. It is shown that the combination of a trellis code, interleaver and the CPM modulator results in a significantly enhanced distance spectrum for the transmitted signals. Upper bounds on the bit error rate are derived by considering the combination of the trellis code, interleaver and the CPM modulator as serially concatenated code. Finally, iterative coherent and non-coherent receivers are proposed and their performance is evaluated through computer simulations.

Accurate formulas and also close, strict upper and lower bounds of error probabilities in a symbol and a bit for classical M-ary two-dimensional signals with PSK, QASK and a manipulation Gray code for any required M are obtained. In order to obtain bounds the sequence of new strict and close inequalities for the Owen function, coming into many accurate formulas of error probability, was defined.

The soft-input soft-output (SISO) module is the basic building block of any iterative receiver for a system consisting of a network of finite state machines (FSM). It is a trellis based algorithm that provides soft information on the input and output of an FSM, with linear complexity on the decision delay D (or the observation length N). When parametric uncertainty is present, the need for adaptive SISOs arises. The proposed solutions either oversimplify the parameter model, or result in exponential complexity on D. In this paper, the exact expression for the soft metrics in the presence of parametric uncertainty modeled as a deterministic constant is rederived in a novel way. Based on this expression, suboptimal algorithms with linear complexity on D and N are presented. The applicability of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated with two examples, namely serially concatenated convolutional codes (SCCC) with carrier phase tracking, and trellis coded modulation (TCM) in frequency-selective fading channels.

Transfer function methods are attractive in the performance analysis of coded modulations since they allow averaging of all possible error event probabilities. However, they can be computationally intensive when the code has a large number of states. A method to reduce the complexity of the transfer function method is proposed. In addition, transfer function methods for computing the upper bound of the bit error probability in a flat fading channel are presented. These bounds are simple and tight at high SNR.

In this paper, we propose a new, reconfigurable algorithm for signal demapping: MUSCOD algorithm, used in DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting, Terrestrial version) receivers. The MUSCOD algorithm/architecture supports both hierarchical and nonhierarchical transmission modes. It implements different modulation schemes supported by the standard. We also propose a high-performance, reconfigurable symbol and bit deinterleaver working in conjuction with the demapper. We implement the proposed architecture using 0.6 /spl mu/m 3.3 V CMOS technology. The proposed architecture requires a system clock frequency of 36.57 MHz. It has a maximum throughput of 40.5 Mbits/s and dissipates 0.3 W.

ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) transmission technology meets Internet access requirement quite well and offers telephone companies a technology for connecting virtually all Internet users at megabit rates. The ANSI (American National Standards Institute) proposes discrete multitone (DMT) modulation with DFT (discrete Fourier transform) bases as the carriers for the ADSL system. Recently, discrete wavelet multitone modulation has been studied with non-blind and blind equalization schemes. We propose an entirely different approach which combines the multitone modulation and optimal orthonormal subband coding.

In this paper we consider the synthesis of a bandpass signal from complex-envelope samples using a polyphase conversion structure based on periodically nonuniform output samples. This approach provides the flexibility to independently choose the sampling rate and carrier frequency, overcoming the restrictions of reconstruction from uniformly spaced output samples. Key to the design of such a system is a particular equivalent filter with a piecewise-constant impulse response that determines both the actual implementation filters and system performance. The transition times of this impulse response are found to be periodically nonuniform, leading to a characterization of the corresponding frequency response. An example design using a previously unavailable carrier frequency is presented which requires fewer filter taps than the alternative, a higher-rate uniform system.

A novel approach to joint source and channel coding for frequency selective channels is presented. Multicarrier modulation is used to obtain an equivalent vector channel to the frequency selective channel and utilize the linear coding procedure of Lee and Petersen (1976). The use of the block pulse amplitude transmission results in graceful degradation of the decoded signal for low channel SNR. The new procedure shows very good performance for image transmission over frequency selective channels with deep nulls in the frequency response, in the very low channel SNR region. Both the encoder and decoder are computationally very inexpensive in terms of design and implementation, compared to the digital transmission with channel optimized vector quantization. Results for transmission of a Gauss-Markov source and "Lena" image on several typical channels are presented.

We consider adaptive coded modulation for systems using QPSK/8PSK/16QAM constellations with a decision-feedback equalizer for slow frequency-selective fading channels. We investigate several potential channel-quality metrics that could be used to choose the correct coding and modulation scheme. We then present a threshold-adaptive algorithm that is especially useful for channels with a wide range of multipath profiles.
