Selection of modes, i.e. coding and modulation schemes against the current channel is a way to increase the degree of service to individual users as well as improving system capacity in a wireless packet data system. By proper selection of trellis coded modulation schemes, all modes can use a common receiver structure without sacrificing error performance. Apart from a low receiver complexity, this also enables code combining of different modes, which is useful when ARQ is used. Through system level simulations on correlated Rayleigh fading channels it is found that a simple way of selecting the proper mode gives excellent performance.

This paper presents a rate 16/17 "punctured" time varying maximum transition run (PMTR) block code. It is not possible to achieve a rate 16/17 or higher TMTR block code which completely suppresses the minimum distance error event. However, it is in general, possible to make a tradeoff between obtaining higher code rates and coding gain by puncturing; the space of codewords and limiting the extent to which the minimum distance error event is suppressed. As an example, we obtain a rate 16/17 block code where the minimum distance error event is supported in only 6 out of the 17 possible codeword locations. An implementation of the code is presented and simulation results examining the performance benefits under different conditions are also presented.

A soft-output decoding scheme was developed for the cyclic-redundancy-check error-correction-code (CRCC) concatenated error correction by applying the list and soft-symbol-output Viterbi algorithm (list-SOVA). By focusing on just the specified dominant error-events in the maximum-likelihood (ML) sequence detector, a soft-output data-reliability generator and a list generator were efficiently simplified for soft-output decoding. The soft-output decoding enables multiple dominant error events within a data block to be corrected without increasing the CRCC redundancy and modifying the CRCC structure. It can also help prevent the CRCC miscorrection when correcting the multiple error-events. It was confirmed that the soft-output decoding with a reasonably sized data-block list can perfectly correct the double error-events within a data-block on a 16/17 rate quasi-MTR-coded modified E/sup 2/PRML (ME/sup 2/PRML) channel at a practical error-rate.

Parallel Decision-Feedback Decoders (PDFD) use a joint equalization and channel decoding scheme that performs decision-feedback equalization based on each survivor path in the channel decoder. In this paper, we propose novel efficient computation methods to implement the PDFD. We show that, contrary to the belief that PDFD is too complex to implement, standard Viterbi decoders can be modified to implement the PDFD and achieve very high bit-rates.

We propose to use turbo codes for wireless communication systems with multiple transmit and receive antennas over Rayleigh fading channels. We show that a simple, arbitrarily picked, turbo coded modulation scheme with a sub-optimal decoding algorithm outperforms the space-time codes significantly. We present examples for both block and fast fading channels, and observe gains as high as 8 dB at a bit error rate of 10/sup -5/ for large interleaver lengths, suitable for data communications. Furthermore, we show that, depending on the channel model, the turbo code block size can be chosen small enough to be suitable for speech applications, and still offer a significant performance improvement in terms of bit and frame error rates.

This paper presents the tradeoff performance of the slow frequency hopped spread spectrum multiple access (SFH-SSMA) communication system under conditions of multiple user interference (MUI) for a common communication channel. A Reed Solomon (RS) code with erasures for decoding are employed along with an orthogonal M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) modulation scheme, and a noncoherent demodulation. As more users are added the communication channel error probability will increase. The tradeoff between the communication system parameters of RS code rate, number of frequency slots available in the frequency hopping pattern, are optimized and analyzed. The optimization methods are based on maximizing the number of simultaneous transmissions of active users (K) and minimizing the bandwidth expansion factor without degradation of the channel performance reliability. An incomplete Beta approximation method was used in the analytical model. The simulation and analytical results show that, for a large number of simultaneous transmissions of active users, optimum utilization of a given channel capacity and minimum RF bandwidth expansion factor can be combined to optimize the channel performance reliability.

An automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme using rate compatible trellis coded modulation, pilot-symbol aided channel estimation, soft output packet combining, and a retransmission request strategy supporting a variable quality of service within a packet is proposed. Simulation results show that this type II hybrid ARQ has about 3-5 dB SNR gain over its type I ARQ counterpart.

This paper presents performance comparison of a fuzzy logic predictor and an autoregressive predictor. Multi-step ahead predictions were made on the traffic intensity of digital video sources coded with an MPEG coder (hybrid motion compensation/differential pulse code modulation/discrete cosine transform method). Although current coding standards recommend constant bit rate (CBR) output by means of a smoothing buffer, the method inherently produces variable bit rate (VBR) output, and VBR transmission is necessary for high quality delivery. Prediction results described in this paper have been obtained using a fuzzy logic prediction scheme, and the conventional linear autoregressive (AR) algorithm. Prediction errors are analysed with low order statistical parameters and hypothesis tests. The proposed fuzzy prediction methods offer higher accuracy and can be applied to the development of usage parameter control (UPC), connection admission control (CAC) and congestion control algorithms in ATM networks.

In an optical channel for a digital holographic data storage system, burst errors, in the form of severe amplitude compression, are experienced in the vicinity of dust and other optical aberrations in the channel. The locations of these burst errors are approximately fixed over a range of perturbations in magnification and vertical-horizontal position. In a calibrated channel, lower error rates can be realized by allocating energy in the modulation code based on a measurement of the approximate location of these effects. This paper discusses theoretical bounds on the energy inside the distortion region, and the modulation code which is used to approach this bound.

Speech compression is the technology of converting human speech into an efficient encoded representation that can be decoded to produce a close approximation of the original signal. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm which compresses speech signals using a wavelet compression technique. The performance of this method is compared against the following representative coding and compression schemes: adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) which reduces the transmitted data by a factor of two; linear predictive coding (LPC) with compression ratio of more than twelve to one; linear predictive coding algorithm using the United States Department of Defense Standard 1015 with compression ratio of 26:1; Global System Mobile (GSM) algorithm which reduces the transmitted data by a factor of five. The following parameters are compared: (i) quality of the reconstructed signal after decoding; (ii) compression ratios. (iii) signal to noise ratio (SNR); (iv) peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR); (v) normalized root mean square error (NRMSE).
