Phase-shift keying (PSK) is an attractive modulation scheme for mobile radio due to its high power efficiency at moderate bit error rates. However, an appropriate pilot signal is required to achieve reliable transmission with coherent modulation on fading channels in code division multiple access (CDMA) technology. In this paper, a pilot-symbol-assisted modulation scheme is investigated. The choice of the slot (including pilot symbols and data symbols) length and pilot spacing is discussed. Since the Doppler spread is related to vehicle speed and carrier frequency, the slot length should be decided by the channel coherent time in order to maintain the required channel quality. It is shown that the higher the vehicle speed, the shorter the slot should be. The spacing of the pilot should be satisfied, also due to the vehicle speed.

This paper presents the performance of different turbo coded modulation schemes in a Rayleigh multipath-fading channel. The performances of spectrally efficient multilevel modulation schemes combined with binary turbo codes are first observed. The results of the above scheme are then compared with that of turbo coded trellis coded modulation scheme (T-TCM). Simulation results show that the binary turbo codes combined with multilevel modulation schemes perform well in Rayleigh fading channels compared to the performance of T-TCM.

We obtain upper bounds on the bit-error rate (BER) for maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of turbo codes constructed with uniform interleavers for M-ary orthogonal signals. We use transfer function bounding techniques to obtain the above bounds. Thus, the upper bounds result in the average bound over all interleavers of a given length. We apply the techniques to parallel concatenated coding (PCC) schemes where recursive convolutional codes are used as constituent codes. We present the average bounds on the BER of turbo codes with constraint length 3 for M-ary orthogonal signals on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We show that the performance advantage of turbo-coded 4-ary orthogonal signals over turbo-coded binary orthogonal signals is smaller than the performance advantage in the absence of coding, which is 3.0 dB.

A variety of emerging applications require the design of systems for embedding one signal within another signal. We describe a new class of embedding methods called quantization index modulation (QIM) and develop a realization termed coded dither modulation in which the embedded information modulates the dither signal of a dithered quantizer. We also develop a framework in which one can analyze the performance trade-offs among robustness, distortion, and embedding rate, and we show that QIM systems have considerable performance advantages over previously proposed spread-spectrum and low-bit modulation systems.

Differential coding CDMA (diffCDMA) is verified to conquer the fatal transmission error when communications are carried from high speed vehicles running through an urban environment with rapid multi-ray Rayleigh channels. With the introduction of differential coding into the primary modulation and employing analytic receiving for primary differential demodulation, the proposed diffCDMA system improves the transmission characteristics of similar CDMA systems such as IS-95 and WcdmaOne IMT2000 for mobile communications at vehicle speeds of more than 100 mile/h mobiles even if a multi-ray environment. Previously, differential coding primary modulation has not been considered for use with CDMA owing to the strict sense synchronization required in demodulation, which suffered from bit error under such rapid multi-ray Rayleigh fading. However, its use is now possible in high speed and high capacity transmission since analytic receiving is being adopted into CDMA systems. In the demodulation procedure of the diffCDMA, the received waves are first detected after multi-ray propagation with certain inevitable errors both in phase and frequency of the recovered carrier for the pseudo synchronization primary demodulation during analytic receiving.

Turbo trellis-coded modulation (T-TCM) is one of several techniques for combining turbo codes with multilevel modulation in order to save the bandwidth of the transmission systems. T-TCM was shown to perform very well on AWGN channels, but its performance over frequency-selective fading channels is unknown. In this paper, a system model to investigate the performance of T-TCM schemes over frequency-selective fading channels is proposed. Simulation results show that when an appropriate receiver is available, T-TCM also performs well on frequency-selective fading channels. T-TCM performance is much better than any other coded-modulation scheme for this type of channel.

Bandwidth efficient modulation schemes using Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are proposed for hybrid in-band-on-channel (IBOC) systems that broadcast digital audio signals simultaneously with analog amplitude modulation (AM) programs in the AM band. Since both the power and bandwidth allocated for digital audio transmission are limited in this application, the system cannot afford to add enough redundancy for error control using conventional concatenated coding schemes. We show that by using multilevel RS and convolutional concatenated coded quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), efficient modulation schemes can be obtained for applications such as IBOC-AM broadcasting.

In this paper performance and capacity of the three standards for wireless local loop (WLL) applications have been investigated, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative evaluation consists of detailed comparison of parameters of each standard and their relevance in WLL applications. In the quantitative analysis detailed simulations have been performed covering diversified sets of conditions. The results of both types of analysis are presented. A major conclusion is that all three standards provide satisfactory performance for WLL applications. For low traffic environments PACS which can employ larger cells perform better than the other two standards. In suburban areas where in addition to coverage capabilities capacity is an issue, DECT has better performance. For high traffic density urban areas with great capacity requirements the three standards all have good performance.

The performance of the concatenated inner trellis coded modulation (TCM) and outer Reed Solomon (RS) code with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is evaluated in a frequency selective fading channel for wireless ATM (WATM). A 512 carrier OFDM is selected to facilitate the transmission of ATM cells of 155 Mb/s rate, in a frequency selective fading channel, while the high gain concatenated scheme is selected for an improved error performance. An interleaver of depth four is introduced at the output of the RS outer coder to randomize the burst errors from the TCM decoder, while a channel interleaver is also introduced to combat the correlated fading of the channel. The investigated concatenated coding scheme is capable of achieving a bit error rate of 10/sup -5/ at an average Eb/No of 14 dB. The result is also compared with that of a convolutional code (CC) with constraint length seven using 16-QAM modulation.

In a previous work Stefanov and Duman (see Proceedings of VTG-Fall, 1999) introduced turbo coded modulation for wireless communication systems with transmit and receive antenna diversity over block Rayleigh fading channels. We showed that a simple, arbitrarily picked, turbo coded modulation scheme using the 4-PSK constellation outperforms the space-time block and trellis codes significantly. In this paper we present further results on the use of turbo coded modulation for antenna diversity systems. In particular, we consider different constellation sizes and various spectral efficiencies. We observe very high gains over the corresponding space-time codes for large interleaver lengths, which is suitable for data communications. We also observe that, depending on the channel model, the turbo code block size can be chosen small enough to be suitable for speech applications, and still offer significant performance improvement in terms of frame error rates.
