This paper presents a new lossless image compression technique called modular differential pulse code modulation (MDPCM). The proposed technique consists of a VQ classifier and several neural network class predictors. The classifier uses the four previously encoded pixels to identify the class of the current pixel (the pixel to be predicted). The current pixel is then predicted by the corresponding class predictor. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique reduces the bit rate by as much as 10 percent when compared to the lossless JPEG.

Modulated codes (MC) are error correction codes (ECC) over the real/complex field, which are used for mitigating the intersymbol interference (ISI). The arithmetic operations of the MC encoder are the same as the ones of an ISI channel, therefore, an ISI channel and an MC can be naturally combined together. With the combination, the MC can be optimally designed for the mitigation of the ISI. In this paper, we propose a new coded zero-forcing decision feedback equalizer (ZF-DFE) using MC. For the MC coded ZF-DFE we present the performance analysis and the optimal MC design for a given ISI channel, where the coding gain based on the joint ZF-DFE is formulated comparing to the uncoded AWGN channel. Numerical results show that the MC coded ZF-DFE outperforms the conventional uncoded/coded ZF-DFE and the uncoded/coded Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding at, at least, low channel SNR, where the BPSK is used.

Linear block codes in the complex field can be applied in spatial and/or temporal diversity receivers in order to develop high performance schemes for (almost-) blind equalization in mobile communications. The proposed technique uses the structure of the encoded transmitted information (with redundancy) to achieve equalization schemes based on a deterministic criterion. Simulations show that the proposed technique is more efficient than other schemes that follow similar equalizer structures. The result is an algorithm that provides the design of channel equalizers in low EbNo scenarios.

The paper presents a robust, low-complexity method of transmitting digitally compressed imagery through very noisy channels. The method is applicable to AWGN and fading channels. The proposed method uses a robust wavelet based image coder employing trellis-coded quantization (TCQ), and optimal source adaptive modulation (SAM) which is implemented through time-frequency diversity. We compare the performance of the SAM-TCQ system to that of a system that utilizes unequal error protection (UEP). We show that for the binary symmetric channel (BSC), the SAM-TCQ system performs as well as UEP-TCQ at high bit error rates (BER), and within 1 dB of the UEP-TCQ system at low bit error rates.

We consider the design of space-time modulation techniques that do not require channel estimates at the transmitter or receiver. We propose a general approach to differential modulation for multiple transmit antennas based on group codes. This approach can be applied to any number of transmit antennas and any signal constellation. We also derive low-complexity differential receivers, error bounds, and modulator design criteria, which we use to design optimal modulators for two transmit antennas.

Wireless broadband access networks are expected to employ packet access with high peak-bandwidth demands. This will impose a significant challenge for frequency reuse, especially for the case of ubiquitous services deployed in a wide area. In this paper, we present simulation results and give insights to the EDGE (enhanced data-rate for GSM evolution) system with low reuse factor (1/3). This system employs link adaptation between a number of modulation and coding schemes as a means for providing several hundred kb/s peak rates in a macro-cellular environment, when combined with multi-slot operation and under favorable channel conditions, and it provides lower rates under different conditions. We also introduce a simple but effective slot-reassignment method for improving packet data throughput. The technique is applicable for any packet-based frequency-reuse wireless systems. It is shown that high peak-rates achieved by link adaptation can provide high throughput, but the user QoS (quality of service) is strongly impacted by the tight frequency reuse. Our proposed method can significantly improve the QoS.

In this paper, a CMOS cell based system VLSI design for Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum (DSSS) wireless LAN transceiver is presented. In addition, an efficient and fast-acquisition demodulation scheme is proposed to use in the receiver architecture. Implementation and testing results are also given. The proposed demodulation scheme can help to positively combine the received signal energy of multipaths so that the detection performance is improved by 3 dB in a typical frequency-selective indoor wireless communication environment. The proposed architecture can synchronize the PN code in 30 /spl mu/s and the chip size is 5600/spl times/4600 /spl mu/m/sup 2/. It can be operated from 3.3 V to 5 V and the power consumption ranges from 189 mW to 250 mW respectively.

We design new trellis codes based on multiple pulse-position modulation (MPPM) that offer high power efficiency. We randomly search for the optimal code that produces the trellis code with the largest minimum Euclidean distance. To verify our results, we derive an approximation for the minimum distance. We combine partial-response precoding with parallel decision-feedback detection to equalize and to decode the trellis codes. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared to linear equalization, decision feedback equalization, parallel decision-feedback detection, and super-state maximum-likelihood sequence detection. Together, the proposed trellis codes and precoding schemes are an effective solution to the signaling design problem, especially in the face of severe multipath dispersion.

In this paper, coherent demodulation models, corresponding to two modulation schemes, including pilot channel and pilot symbol assisted in the reverse link of wideband CDMA, are given. Analysis and comparison of the above two schemes with that of noncoherent modulation are given. It is concluded that the performance enhancement, concerning system capacity, is related to the ratio of the pilot signal power to total transmission power in the reverse link for the wideband CDMA systems.
