The results on the design and the measurement of a 5.8 GHz GaAs transmitter MMIC for electronic toll collection (ETC) system on-board equipment are presented. The MMIC of single chip and single supply without any external element is assembled into a 16-pin SSOP package. A novel drain-controlling modulation circuit is invented as a modulator to provide linear modulation. The measured adjacent channel power (ACP) is lower than -47 dBc. The on/off ratio of modulation is above 40 dB at 5.8 GHz under a random data modulation of 1.024 Mbps with Manchester coding.

COFDM is a channel coding and modulation scheme that mitigates the adverse effects of time-varying, frequency-selective fading by using multi-carrier modulation combined with time- and frequency-domain interleaving and forward error correcting coding (FEC). COFDM effectively transforms the time-domain equalisation problem of conventional single carrier systems into the frequency domain. This paper examines the performance of an efficient feedback channel estimation and equalisation algorithm for a 25 Mb/s COFDM-QAM system in a frequency-selective multipath channel. In particular, the effect of the COFDM block length relative to the coherence time of the channel is discussed.

The performance of a non-coherent delay-locked loop (DLL) in the presence of multiple-access interference (MAI) is presented. The effect of the MAI on performance is evaluated in terms of two performance criteria: the mean-time-to-loss-lock (MTLL) and the root-mean-square (rms) tracking error. It is shown that the performance of the non-coherent DLL is drastically effected as the number of users in a system is increased. The effect of the near-far ratio, PN code sequence length, and loop signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on the DLL's performance in MAI are also examined.

Transmission over mobile fading channels requires some diversity scheme to obtain better error rates. The objective of this paper is to present systems that combine coded modulation with built-in time diversity, an optimized constellation and multiple transmission antennas. The transmission systems are simulated over fast-fading channels that present Doppler effects. A gain of 12 dB is attained in comparison with other proposed systems.

Time delay spread is an impairment which can seriously degrade the performance of wireless personal communication systems. This paper investigates the effects of time delay spread on unequalized trellis coded modulation (TCM) in multipath fading channels. Explicit bounds for the pairwise error probability (PEP) of TCM over such channels are derived and then used to evaluate TCM performance as well as investigate the delay spread tolerance limit of TCM, including I-Q TCM.

A new predictor for DPCM based on a recurrent neural network is proposed. The proposed predictor which uses the bilinear recurrent neural network (BLRNN), has shown good performance for time-series prediction problems, and it is applied to DPCM for image compression with predictive coding. The performance of DPCM with BLRNN predictor is compared with the conventional DPCM with different predictors, such as the linear predictor and median predictor. The results show that the proposed method gives improved results over the conventional DPCM with linear predictor or median predictor in terms of PSNR or reconstructed images.

This paper investigates link quality estimates for GSM, in order to use them as an input for link adaptation algorithms. Two channel heuristics are extracted from the GSM transmission chain. Their suitability as triggering criteria is assessed by mapping them onto a bit error rate estimate. Then a real bit error rate characterisation is outlined, and the prediction error obtained is compared to the prediction error observed for the bit error rate estimates extracted from the heuristics. Results show that the accuracy of these estimates is similar to what could be achieved if real bit error rate measurements were available, being suitable for application to link adaptation algorithms.

It has previously been shown that for an image or video transmission scheme to be both efficient and robust in practice that a joint source-channel coding approach is necessary. In this work, we discuss efforts in the field of joint source-channel coding of images and video. We then present a general methodology for determining the optimal tradeoff between source and channel coding as a function of channel characteristics for transmission of video. Further reduction in the computational complexity of this methodology through the use of models is discussed. Results of the optimal rate allocation procedure are presented for selected source and channel coding schemes and as a function of channel parameters.
