For Rayleigh fading channels, the primary code design criterion for a trellis coded modulation scheme is to maximize its effective code length (ECL). This paper concerns the design of optimal (2,1) Z/sub 2/-convolutional encoders (CE) which, when combined with the continuous phase encoder (CPE) of CPFSK scheme, reaches the upper bound of ECL of a generic trellis coded modulation scheme. We develop sufficient conditions for the optimality of such a CE and the upper bound of the complexity for the test of these sufficient conditions is also shown.

For a multi-carrier spread-spectrum (MC-SS) system, the inner spreading can be optimized by applying M-ary orthogonal modulation. We investigate the concatenation of maximum likelihood (ML) Viterbi (1995) decoding with M-ary orthogonal modulation in a MC-SS system. The system operates over a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading indoor channel in the uplink. We first evaluate the bit specific log-likelihood ratio for ML Viterbi decoding and present an estimation of the ratio exploiting the MC technique. Furthermore, the trade-off between channel coding, M-ary orthogonal modulation and simple spreading is considered by Monte-Carlo simulations. The results are always compared with BPSK performance and they emphasize for the concerned indoor transmission scenario that a moderate bit-error-rate can only be achieved if M-ary orthogonal modulation is employed. All simulations are related to the European Hiperlan/2 standardization whereas the results are generally valid.

Fixed modulation schemes are designed for the worst operating conditions and cannot take advantage of the better signal to noise conditions present at high elevations. An adaptive modulation scheme, which uses different constellation patterns with trellis coded modulation and a Reed Solomon outer code is proposed in this paper. The system is tested under AWGN noise and Rician/Rayleigh fading conditions. The system is found to provide good performance in AWGN and moderate fading conditions.

This paper discusses progress in the development of high dynamic range direct conversion digital receivers being developed for DARPA (under the Advanced Digital Receiver Technology (ADRT) program), employing bandpass multibit /spl Sigma//spl Delta/ modulation with a focus on achieving 16 ENOB (98 dB SINAD and 120 dB SFDR) over 100 MHz bandwidth. An electronically tunable loop filter based on Recursive Transversal Filter (RTF) techniques provides bandpass noise shaping with multiple noise shaping center frequencies between 10 MHz and 900 MHz and with multiple bandwidths. A low in-band effective ADC noise figure of 2 dB enables direct conversion without an LNA external to the ADC. In this paper, the architecture for this DARPA receiver, employing 3.2 GSPS HBT AlGaAs-GaAs mixed signal elements, RTF low jitter clock, and 800 MSPSa GaAs DCFL digital processor, is discussed.

A class of block multidimensional M-PSK modulation codes was proposed by Portugeis (1991) and some 8-PSK codes were constructed. In comparison with codes using two-dimensional modulation, the constructed codes showed better phase symmetry properties and lower first error coefficients with multistage decoding. However, the trade-off between performance and decoding complexity was not thoroughly investigated. This paper presents a performance comparison of multistage decoding schemes for the constructed codes on an AWGN channel. Upper bounds to block error probability (P/sub B/) for these schemes are obtained and their tightness confirmed by simulation. One of the schemes has a coding gain of 3.9 dB over uncoded 4-PSK at P/sub B/=10/sup -4/ and a gain of 0.3 dB over a two-dimensional 8-PSK code with similar parameters at the cost of an acceptable increase in decoding complexity.

Previous work by the authors presents a novel class of signal space codes called collision resistant modulations (CRM) for bandwidth efficient transmission on a random access collision channel, as in packet-radio applications. Results show that CRMs achieve a significant gain over traditional modulation formats under a slotted ALOHA protocol. We investigate the potentials of using CRM under a partially ordered access protocol like packet reservation multiple access (PRMA). A system based on Reed-Solomon coded CRM is compared with a more traditional system using the same Reed-Solomon coding concatenated with simple one-dimensional modulation schemes. Results show that the proposed coded PRMA yields significant improvements in terms of both the blocking probability and number of established calls (served users), at the expense of a slight increase in the average transmitted power.

Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is well-known for achieving coding gain in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) without any bandwidth or power expansion. This property makes it a very attractive scheme to be used in the mobile fading environment where both bandwidth and power are precious resources. The possibility of applying TCM in the presence of additive noise and frequency-selective fading are considered. In particular, various receiver structures with moderate complexity are investigated together with the Ungerboeck's (1982) 8-PSK TCM schemes. The simulation results show that with the proper choice of soft-output algorithm, a coding gain of 4 dB to 6 dB can be achieved at a bit error rate level of 10/sup -3/.

An improved scheme including unequal error protection in the CDMA forward link for the IMT-2000 is presented. The performance of this scheme is analyzed by the use of a CS-ACELP speech coder, which was proposed primarily for a wireless system, and RCPC channel coder over multipath fading channel and BPSK modulation. From the combined analysis results of the bit error sensitivity information on the CS-ACELP coder, a quality improvement of 0.4/spl sim/1 dB in the SEGSNR is achieved. A flexible replacement of the conventional structure without a change of the total transmission rate and without puncturing of the power control bit can be obtained.
