This paper presents the concept for data throughput maximization for an Exploratory In-orbit Verification of an E/W-Band communication link considering the dynamic link budget for a CubeSat-based mission in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and multi-Gigabit data rate. A variable-coded modulation scheme is implemented on the satellite payload computer and it is tested in a back-to-back configuration in order to maximize the data throughput, while taking into account the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) models for atmospheric effects, the satellite motion and the link quality, capacity and performance. By introducing an variable-coded modulation scheme the data throughput during one satellite overpass can be increased by at least 40% compared to a fixed modulation scheme.

M-ary code-shifted differential chaos shift keying with in-phase and quadrature code index modulation

In this study, an M-ary code-shifted differential chaos shift keying system with in-phase and quadrature code index modulation (I/Q-CIM-CS-MDCSK) is presented. In the proposed system, the information bits are conveyed not only by the M-ary constellation symbols, but also by the specific Walsh codes indices corresponding to the in-phase and quadrature branches of M-ary information bearing signals. Since the reference signal and the multiple M-ary information bearing signals are overlapped and transmitted within the identical time slot in a parallel manner, the spectral efficiency of the I/Q-CIM-CS-MDCSK system is enhanced significantly. In addition, the analytical bit error rate (BER) expressions for the presented system are derived under the additive white Gaussian noise and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Finally, the BER performance of the proposed system is compared to other chaotic communication systems. The results manifest that the I/Q-CIM-CS-MDCSK system is a promising and competitive chaotic communication scheme.

For the wavelength division multiplexing coherent optical communication system, we use an 8-dimensional modulation coding method to reduce the inter-channel nonlinear interference. The 8-dimensional modulation format enables the degree of polarization of the 8-dimensional symbol composed of four 2-dimensional symbols of adjacent time slots equal to 0, thereby effectively suppressing the nonlinear polarization scattering effect (NPSE) caused by the inter-channel nonlinear interference noise (NLIN). In simulations, we conduct a 30-GBaud 8D-16 quadrature amplitude modulated (8D-16QAM) and conventional polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals transmission over 2000-km standard single mode fibe (SSMF) in a 5-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coherent optical communication system. Under the same spectrum efficiency, the 8D-16QAM can obtain a nonlinear gain of more than 0.3dB compared with the conventional PDM-QPSK signal.

Performance of grey-coded IQM-based optical modulation formats on high-speed long-haul optical communication link

In this article the performance of grey-coded advanced optical modulation formats is evaluated on a single-channel high-speed long-haul optical communication link and are compared to the respective differential-coded modulation formats. Polarisation division multiplexed optical in-phase quadrature modulator (IQM) structure and homodyne detection scheme are used to realise 100Gbps quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 120Gbps 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), 360Gbps 32-QAM and 480Gbps 64-QAM modulation formats. Advanced digital signal processing unit with various pre-processing and recovery stages such as direct current blocking, normalisation, low-pass Bessel filter, resampling, quadrature imbalance compensation, chromatic dispersion compensation, non-linear compensation, timing recovery, adaptive equalisation, down-sampling, frequency offset estimation, and carrier phase estimation is used at the receiving end to compensate for signal impairments during propagation. Maximum transmission distances of 7200, 1050, 560, and 360km have been achieved at an acceptable bit error rate for QPSK, 16-QAM, 32-QAM, and 64-QAM, respectively. The grey-coded systems outperformed the differential-coded systems regarding optical signal-to-noise ratio requirement, receiver sensitivity, and transmission distance.

Efficient technique for DLL S-curve side zero-crossings cancellation in global positioning system/Galileo receiver

In this study, the authors propose a new method that eliminates ambiguity in global navigation satellite system (GNSS) code acquisition and tracking significantly. It is based on the use of a specified locally generated (SLG) pseudo-random noise code that can be correlated with any received binary offset carrier sine- or cosine-modulated signal. As a result, the correlation function (CF) together with its discriminator function (DF) at the delay locked loop (DLL) output, determined within a tracking region of (-1, 1) chips, are unambiguous and narrow, providing thus better positioning accuracy. On the other hand, the SLG-based methods CF and DF are such as those of high-resolution correlator and Strobe correlator, initially proposed for multipath mitigation in classical binary phase shift keying-modulated code. In addition, their proposed SLG-based scheme is valid for any value of the early-late chip spacing in the DLL-DF. The computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme is unambiguous for DLL code-tracking operation and has superior performance in the estimation of the delay of line of sight signal in GNSS applications.

Labeling-Based Recipient Identification for 16-QAM BICM-ID

In recent years, many efforts have been made to find the optimal labeling maps for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) with the aim to exploit the benefits of iterative decoding to the maximal extent. The current paper reveals new opportunities that BICM-ID signal labeling brings for system designers: it enables recipient addressing without any explicitly sent identifier. Instead, the recipient ID is represented by a labeling map, selected from a set of equally optimal labelings. A simple method of frame filtering, necessary to retrieve the desired data frame at the receiver side, is proposed and evaluated. It is also shown that the proposed Labeling-Based Recipient Identification (LABRID) approach does not cause any inferior performance outcome in terms of bit error rate.

In this study, we propose a four-dimensional modulation, referred to as modulation network coding (MNC), to address the problem of decoding a signal from multiple source node transmissions in mobile fast fading channels. The MNC scheme judiciously mixes a two-dimensional (2D) pilot symbol with a 2D information symbol, and makes use of a /4 rotated M-pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation to guaranty an effective decoding of all the interfering symbols even in the case of a smaller channel Doppler spread compared with the period of the MNC symbol. In addition, because the MNC scheme makes use of an additional dimension introduced through orthogonal pulse waveform, the use of the pilot symbols does not reduce the effective information rate. The analytical and simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a low symbol error probability with a good signal-to-noise ratio when controlling a few parameters impacting the performance of the system such as the synchronisation in time and in frequency of the source nodes.

Ternary Trellis Coded modulation

Ternary trellis coded modulation (TTCM) is introduced. This combines triangular signal constellations with ternary convolutional codes. The performance of TTCM is presented and compared with binary trellis coded modulation (BTCM) which employs square quadrature amplitude modulation (SQAM) and binary convolutional coding. Ternary set partitioning (TSP) is used for TTCM, and binary-to-ternary conversion is determined that is suitable for TTCM. A construction for M-ary triangular QAM (TQAM) which is compatible with TSP is presented. The performance of BTCM is compared with that of TTCM.

41.5-Tb/s Transmission Over 549 km of Field Deployed Fiber Using Throughput Optimized Probabilistic-Shaped 144QAM

We demonstrate high spectral efficiency transmission over 549 km of field deployed single-mode fiber using probabilistic-shaped 144QAM. We achieved 41.5 Tb/s over the C-band at a spectral efficiency of 9.02 b/s/Hz using 32-Gbaud channels at a channel spacing of 33.33 GHz, and 38.1 Tb/s at a spectral efficiency of 8.28 b/s/Hz using 48-Chaud channels at a channel spacing of 50 CHz. To the best of our knowledge, these are the highest total capacities and spectral efficiencies reported in a metro field environment using C-band only. In high spectral efficiency transmission, it is necessary to optimize back-to-back performance in order to maximize the link loss margin. Our results are enabled by the joint optimization of constellation shaping and coding overhead to minimize the gap to Shannon's capacity, transmitter- and receiver-side digital backpropagation, signal clipping optimization, and I/Q imbalance compensation.

Novel Design for Short Analog Fountain Codes

Adaptive coding and modulation in current cellular networks relies on a channel quality indicator fed back from the receiver to the transmitter. The process of acquiring channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is estimated to take 5-8 ms. For short-packet transmissions in machine-type communications (MTC), the data transmission of small payloads is estimated to take a fraction of a millisecond, i.e., a fraction of the end to end latency. This is especially problematic for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) that require an end-to-end latency of 1 ms only. To this end, self-adaptive coding and modulation, aka rateless coding, is much needed to cater for these stringent requirements. In this letter, a new design is proposed for the recently proposed class of rateless codes, dubbed analog fountain codes (AFC), tailored for short-packet transmissions. The numerical results show no error floors down to block error rates of 10(-7), thus meeting the ultra-high reliability requirement of URLLC.
