We develop a scheme to improve data throughput for multiuser cooperative relay communications operating in half-duplex mode. Cooperative relay, while effective in mitigating fading effects, might reduce the overall throughput of the network since it requires additionally resources for relay. In order to overcome this limitation, we develop a multiuser cooperative communication scheme that employs hierarchical modulation. This scheme exploits the different fading conditions for each user and allows the system to transmit two independent data streams simultaneously. Since the bit-error rate of the proposed system is a function of the distance parameters of hierarchical modulation, transmission reliability can be controlled flexibly by varying the distance parameter. We derive the error-rate expressions of the proposed scheme and compare its symbol-error rate performance for specific distance parameters with that of conventional relay schemes.

In this paper, we propose Patched Distributed Space-Time Block Codes (DSTBC) for the Dynamic Decode and Forward (DDF) Relaying protocol, in which the relay transmits combination of information from the first and second phase of the DDF protocol, and the destination makes a linear combination of symbols received in the two phases. Thus, from the error correcting code point of view, the number of coded bits seeing a diversity-one channel reduces proportionally as the number of symbols sent by the relay increases, which is not the case with known schemes. In other words, the length of the phase two of the DDF protocol needed to achieve full diversity can be reduced with respect to known schemes. Three examples of Patched DSTBC are presented, the Patched Alamouti, the Patched Golden Code and the Patched Silver Code whose outage analyses prove the diversity enhancement offered by the proposed scheme.

In this paper we study a two-hop cooperative transmission scheme where multiple relays forward the data simultaneously using Randomized Distributed Space Time Codes (R-DSTC). We propose to integrate this randomized cooperative transmission with layered video coding and packet level Forward Error Correction (FEC) to enable error resilient video multicast. Data rates in both hops as well as the FEC rate are adopted to maximize the video quality. Our results show that while rate-adaptive direct transmission provides better video quality than conventional multicast, randomized cooperative scheme outperforms both strategies significantly.

Due to the AMC (Adaptive modulation and coding) mechanism adopted in the 802.16e physical layer, each connection's spectrum requirements depend on its SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). Meanwhile, according to the OFDMA functionality, the limited transmission power of every terminal is divided among the simultaneously allocated subcarriers, i.e. a terminal's uplink SNR is reversely proportional to the number of occupied subcarriers. In this framework, the present paper introduces a Radio Resource Management (RRM) algorithm capable of minimizing bandwidth demands via adequately manipulating the subcarriers' assignment. The number of allocated subcarriers is not dictated solely by the connections' bitrate requirements, but it is particularly chosen so as to optimize the bits per symbol ratio via toggling between different AMC schemes.

A multiple component carrier (CC) solution has been agreed as the underlying structure of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) systems, which are currently being standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). In this deployment, the bundling of modulation and coding Scheme (MCS) and Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) parameters across multiple CCs is foreseen to maintain the feedback signaling comparable with the one of the previous LTE Release 8. This paper focuses on the transmission over multiple CCs in LTE-A Uplink. Issues related to the bundling of the link level parameters is discussed and a simple Codeword (CW) mixing strategy is proposed to boost the spectral efficiency performance while keeping low feedback overhead. Results show that, combined HARQ/MCS bundling can achieve the same performance of HARQ only bundling when used together with our proposed CW mixing strategy, with the advantage of a lower feedback overhead. CW mixing also leads to similar spectral efficiency when the bundling is performed over 2 and 3 CCs. The use of a turbo Successive Interference Cancellation (turbo SIC) receiver further improves the spectral efficiency, especially when antenna gain imbalance (AGI) occurs.

In this paper, we study coding techniques for the multiple-input multiple-output multi-hop amplify-and-forward (MIMO-MH-AF) block-fading channel. We first derive conditions on coding rates and space-time precoders that allow a coded modulation to achieve the diversity order provided by the channel. We then derive a bound on the diversity order of a coded modulation so as to attain maximum diversity through parallel partitioning of the channel. Finally, word error rate performances are compared to outage probabilities.

This paper investigates the error performance and precoder design for a bandwidth-efficient bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) system over a non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF)half-duplex single-relay channel. A tight union bound on the bit error probability (BEP) is first derived for an arbitrary block length of 2N using a 2N × 2N precoder. This bound provides an useful tool to predict the error performance. Attention is then devoted to the system using 2×2 precoder, where a closed-form expression of the bound is obtained. Based on this expression, an optimal 2×2 precoder applicable to any modulation scheme is developed. Different from the optimal precoders designed for uncoded NAF systems, the derived precoder indicates that the source only needs to send the superposition of signals in the first time slot and being silent in the second time slot in order to achieve the best asymptotic performance. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed precoder not only exploits full cooperative diversity but also offers a significant coding gain over optimal precoders for uncoded NAF systems.

We study the uplink control signaling in 3GPP-Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. Specifically, we propose a precoding method that uses complex-field coding (CFC) to improve the performance of the PUCCH format 2 control signaling. In the case of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and with a single receive antenna, the proposed method offers significant gains compared to the coding currently used in 3GPP-LTE. However the gains are marginal with two receive antennas. In order to examine the impact of channel estimation errors, we also derive the optimal detector for the case of imperfect receiver CSI, both for conventional coding and for the proposed CFC method.

This paper deals with the local spectrum sensing problem in non-Gaussian noise. It is of great importance to reliably detect the presence of licensed users in cognitive radio. This task highly depends on the noise distribution, thus it is important to characterize the noise behavior as best as possible. Although Gaussian assumption for noise is of interest due to many reasons, it sometimes fails to model the behavior of noise in practice. In this paper we present a local spectrum sensing scheme in a broad family of non-Gaussian noise. We reasonably assume that the Primary User (PU) signal is Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulated, where the number of constellation points, M, and the symbol code sequence are unknown to the Secondary Users (SU), as in practice. We also assume that the SUs are unaware of the PU signal complex amplitude and the non-Gaussian noise variance. Within this framework, we obtain the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) as our spectrum sensing scheme and propose an approximate implementation of the resulting GLRT. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme has an acceptable performance.
