This paper investigates the downlink burst allocation problem in IEEE 802.16 OFDMA system. In order to increase the subchannel utilization and to improve the network throughput, a channel-aware renumbering (CSR) scheme and a channel-aware downlink burst allocation (CDBA) scheme are proposed in this paper. CSR considers the difference among subchannel qualities of MSs and logically renumbers the subchannels so that each MS can have a group of subchannels supported the same and more efficient modulation and coding (MC) scheme. CDBA is to decide the size, shape and the position of each burst. Because of the rectangular burst allocation constraint, some slots in or among rectangular bursts will be wasted. These two kinds of slot wastage problems are defined as internal and external fragmentation problems in the paper. Therefore, in order to comply with the rectangular burst allocation constraint, to overcome the fragmentation problems and to increase the network throughput, CDBA is to determine the size and the position of each MS's burst based on the subchannel qualities of MSs and the bandwidth requirements. The simulation results show that CDBA with CSR outperforms other related approaches with or without CSR in terms of the throughput, the service ratio, the subchannel utilization and the DL-MAP overhead.

One of the 4G broadband wireless access technologies that managed to impose, is mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) a technology developed according to the specifications of the IEEE 802.16 standard. It aims to deliver high data rates over wide areas, even in the case when the transmission takes place at vehicular speeds of up to 125 km/h. The current paper proposes to provide an optimum link adaptation of a fully compliant mobile WiMAX system operating at 2.3 GHz in a vehicular multipath fading channel (ITU-R M.1225 Veh.A). The evaluation of the system's performance was done starting from the quality of service (QoS) requirements imposed by certain types of applications. The results are expressed in terms of the most suited coding scheme, the achievable link throughput and operating range, the required receiver sensitivity as well as the adaptive modulation switching points.

Recently, MIMO detectors which are based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation techniques have been proposed as alternatives to, e.g., the well-known sphere detector. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the performance of MCMC detectors. We study the impact of several parameters such as the list size and the number of independently running chains. As a performance criterion, our analysis is based on the mutual information over an equivalent modulation channel, rather than on coded bit error rates, because this metric is independent of the outer channel code and provides valuable insights over the whole SNR range of interest. Furthermore, we show that combining the MCMC detector with a hard-output sphere detector removes the error floor at high SNR, which is a well-known problem of the MCMC principle.

We derive the log-likelihood ratio for iterative decoding of low-density parity-check codes transmitted using binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) with pilot-symbol-assisted modulation. This is done with the aid of a reference phasor formed from the received pilot signals. We compare our metric with the existing Gaussian metric for differential BPSK transmission and also show that our metric converges to that for coherent BPSK transmission in the limit as the size of the pilot reference set becomes large. Simulation results verify our analysis and study the effects of carrier phase noise and signal-to-noise ratio mis-estimation on the performance of the metric.

This paper proposes a novel soft decision demapping algorithm of 16-Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (16-APSK) signals in AWGN channels. The proposed algorithm has a lower complexity compared with the well-known Log-Max algorithm. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm degrades little in BER performance when it is implemented with Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes.

Sobolev dual frames have recently been proposed as optimal alternative reconstruction operators that are specifically tailored for Sigma-Delta (¿¿) quantization of frame coefficients. While the canonical dual frame of a given analysis (sampling) frame is optimal for the white-noise type quantization error of Pulse Code modulation (PCM), the Sobolev dual offers significant reduction of the reconstruction error for the colored-noise of ¿¿ quantization. However, initial quantitative results concerning the use of Sobolev dual frames required certain regularity assumptions on the given analysis frame in order to deduce improvements of performance on reconstruction that are similar to those achieved in the standard setting of bandlimited functions. In this paper, we show that these regularity assumptions can be lifted for (Gaussian) random frames with high probability on the choice of the analysis frame. Our results are immediately applicable in the traditional oversampled (coarse) quantization scenario, but also extend to compressive sampling of sparse signals.

Adaptive modulation communication systems have been popular nowadays. The tradeoff between the symbol error rate and the data rate resulting from the constellation option is crucial in adaptive modulation. In this paper, we propose a constellation subset selection (CSS) approach to seek this tradeoff and design novel efficient approximation algorithms to tackle the CSS problems. The new theorems and studies on the algorithmic and systematic aspects for the constellation subset selection are facilitated. Our attempt to cope with the CSS problems would be valuable for the future communication systems with adjustable constellation sets.

In this paper, we developed a joint AMC-ARQ design combining adaptive modulation and coding at the physical layer with automatic repeat request protocol at the data link layer in multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems which is converted into a series of parallel and independent flat sub-channels based on channel matrix singular value decomposition(SVD) at the physical layer. Theoretical derivation supports that our proposed design maximizes the spectral efficiency under prescribed delay and error performance constrains. Simulation results show that this cross-layer design based on channel matrix singular decomposition for MIMO-OFDM obtains more than 2 dB gain in spectral efficiency comparing the traditional SISO cross-layer design.

With the rapidly development of beyond third generation mobile communication system, how to improve the spectrum efficiency becomes a key problem. Based on the analysis of the quality of iterative decoding influenced by constellation labeling, a new general mapping rules was proposed in bit interleaved coded modulation and iterative decoding. On the one hand, to improve the performance of the system at higher signal noise ratio, the new scheme was designed of maximum squared Euclidean distance between the symbols which Hamming distance is one. On the other hand, to improve the soft-output information quality of demodulator, the new scheme has better squared Euclidean distance spectrum when Hamming distances is more than one, so the performance was improved at lower signal noise ratio. Simulation results and performance analysis show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance of BICM-ID at lower SNR under AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.

This paper presents a design of a turbo decoder for advanced terrestrial DMB(AT-DMB) baseband receiver SoC. The turbo decoder uses the max-log-map algorithm with simple min function. It features an interleaver address generator that computes the interleaved addresses for four block sizes enabling it to quickly switch context to support different data services. The decoder is integrated to the AT-DMB baseband receiver SoC with other functional blocks. The AT-DMB baseband receiver SoC is fabricated using 0.13 um 1 poly 8 metal technology.
