Proposed is a novel technique, hereby referred to as pilot symbol assisted coding (PSAC), where a predetermined fraction of binary pilot symbols is interspersed with the channel-coded bits at the channel coding stage, instead of multiplexing the pilots with the data symbols at the modulation stage, as in classic pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM). It is demonstrated that the PSAC succeeds in gleaning more benefits from the pilot overhead investment, than just simply the capability of channel estimation such as in the PSAM technique.

Low-complexity sphere decoding for detection of OFDM systems in doubly-selective fading channels

p A low-complexity detection scheme consisting of a sphere decoder and a parallel interference cancellation (PIC) equaliser is proposed for OFDM systems in doubly-selective fading channels. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that this detection scheme substantially improves the symbol error rate performance of OFDM systems compared with the traditional PIC equaliser while requiring lower complexity at moderate and high signal- to-noise ratios.

In this paper, we explain how to build a turbo-like structure with binary inputs and chaotic outputs for efficient coding and decoding in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We analyze the convergence of the decoding algorithm, the performance in the error floor region and explain minimum distance properties of the resulting codes.

Low-complexity LDPC coded BICM-ID with orthogonal modulations

A low-complexity low density parity check (LDPC) coded bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) scheme with orthogonal modulations is proposed. With a novel mapping strategy of coded bits to symbols, the proposed scheme is equivalent to a generalised LDPC code with Hadamard constraints and thus orthogonal demodulation can be merged into the iterative LDPC decoding process, resulting in a simpler implementation and a lower computational complexity.

A brain computer interface (BCI) translates human intentions into control signals to establish a direct communication channel between the human brain and external devices. Because a BCI does not depend on the brain's normal output pathways of peripheral nerves and muscles, it can provide a new communication channel to people with severe motor disabilities.

Using DVB-S2 Adaptive coding and modulation for the Provision of Satellite Triple Play Services

The outstanding spectrum efficiency of DVB-S2 along with its adaptability and configurability makes it a very promising technology for next-generation satellite communications. This article discusses the application of the adaptive coding and modulation feature of DVB-S2 in the provision of satellite triple play services over an interactive DVB-S2/DVB-RCS network in order to compensate for fluctuations in propagation conditions. A cross-layer resource management system is proposed in order to adapt the system to such fluctuations and improve its overall efficiency. Based on area-specific attenuation models, an efficiency study is presented, showing considerable capacity gains over static transmission schemes (DVB-S and DVB-S2 CCM).

Differential Phase Shift-Quantum Key Distribution

Quantum-key distribution has been studied as an ultimate method for secure communications, and now it is emerging as a technology that can be deployed in real fiber networks. Here, we present our QKD experiments based on the differential-phase-shift QKD protocol. A DPS-QKD system has a simple configuration that is easy to implement with conventional optical communication components, and it is suitable for a high-clock rate system. Moreover, although the DPS-QKD system is implemented with an attenuated laser source, it is inherently secure against strong eavesdropping attacks called photon number-splitting attacks, which pose a serious threat to conventional QKD systems with attenuated laser sources. We also describe three types of single-photon detectors that are suitable for high-speed, long-distance QKD: an up-conversion detector, a superconducting single-photon detector, and a sinusoidally gated InGaAs avalanche photodiode. We present our record-setting QKD experiments that employed those detectors.

The traditional method of power spectrum computation of modulation code is that firstly computing the autocorrelation function of the code, and then taking Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function to get the power spectrum. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get autocorrelation function according to the coding methods, therefore, the traditional method is not fit to compute power spectrum of practical RLL code. In this article, we use a method that is based on one-step state-transition matrix is much simpler, which all the parameters can be computed according to RLL coding methods. We use the method to compute the power spectrum of a new modulation code called RLL (2, 12;8, 15), and evaluate the spectrum performance of the new modulation code according to the power spectrum. Meanwhile, we improve the new modulation code in order to get a better spectrum performance.

We propose a centralized resource allocation scheme called Proportional Fairness with Adjustable QoS (PF-AQ) for an OFDMA wireless system, which transmitting data on a frame basis. We have network resources in frequency and time domains. We develop a simple and efficient user selection, subchannel assignment, and time slot allocation based on PF utility function with a consideration of realistic queue length. Our scheme schedules a batch of packets which can extend across multiple time slots at a time, and employs multi-user diversity to maximize system throughput while keeping throughput fairness. Our scheme enhances fairness by the limitation of the maximum number of time slots assigned to each user per frame. QoS in terms of throughput and queue size can also be adjusted by adjusting this limitation.
