A Markov based method for modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection is proposed for pilot assistant adaptive modulation and coding scheme (AMC) with hybrid ARQ (HARQ) retransmissions. A first-order finite-state Markov model (FSMM) is introduced to represent the time correlation character of channel fading during (channel quality indicator) CQI feedback and HARQ retransmissions. According to different QoS targets, such as maximizing the air interface throughput or maintaining a target frame error rate (FER) for each user, the Markov based method can deduce different reference pilot thresholds for each MCS. Theoretical analysis and link level simulation results both show the efficiency of the Markov based method for pilot threshold calculation according to different QoS target and different HARQ retransmission times

From home entertainment we know a number of digital entertainment sources which we cherish. Especially digital broadcasting, such as DAB, DVB, HD-Radio and SDARS just to name a few, are entering the automotive market. Premium car manufacturers are offering DAB, DVB-T as well as HD-Radio and SDARS as digital sound broadcasting for their customers. However, a lot of efforts need to be undertaken to get good performance. This paper deals with answering the often asked question, why digital broadcasting systems in vehicular environments do not perform as good as their theoretical performance should intend. With an excessive measurement campaign with a number of premium car manufacturers in Germany, we found three main arguments; a) the digital modulation becomes week in terms of bit-errors with enhanced data rates b) wideband modulation schemes, such as COFDM for example, are fragile in fading environments, especially reactive on frequency selective fading and c) used coding and modulation techniques can cope with single-frequency and single-event interferences well but not with permanent broadband interference, which are often found in EMC signatures in well-equipped luxury cars.

With the popularity of mobile communication, the importance of backbone network of the mobile networks, i.e. mobile backhaul networks, has increased significantly. With the decreasing size of mobile network system cells, it is considered next-generation mobile backhaul networks will be mesh-based. To reduce the operating expenses, i.e. OPEX, of the network, mobile network carriers are beginning to shift their circuit-switched networks to packet-switched networks. Most mobile backhaul networks are formed with microwave radios. To increase data rate, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is used for wireless links. As a result, the data rate of each wireless link changes over time and thus leads to unexpected packet loss or traffic degradation. This paper proposes a routing scheme and methods for estimating the transmission parameters or modes of wireless links to route bandwidth guaranteed flows over mobile backhaul networks. With estimation methods, degradation of existing flows caused by unexpected changes in the data rate of wireless links can be reduced. This paper shows using mode history of link to estimate the link quality can route bandwidth guaranteed flows efficiently by choosing more stable links for the path. We also show that link estimation methods are effective when mode distribution follows normal, uniform and Poisson distributions.

A low-noise EDGE transmitter implemented in a 65nm CMOS process using direct-conversion architecture for low-band application is presented. The transmitter consists of a programmable-gain I/Q modulator, a frequency divider and a power detector for carrier leakage calibration. The design delivers maximum output power > 1.5 dBm with a 0.5 dB gain step for the 30 dB dynamic range and has < -68 dBc modulation spectrum at 400-kHz offset under maximum gain level. The out-of-band noise at 20 MHz offset with the power amplifier is -80.9 dBm with 100-kHz resolution bandwidth. The carrier leakage suppression after calibration can reach -50 dBc. The design consumes 21 mA at 1.5-V supply and 40 mA at 2.7-V supply and is housed in a 40-pin QFN package.

The performance of the multi-carrier radar signal is investigated using the ambiguity function. The multi-carrier waveform under consideration is modulated by random phase coding, with the intention to combine radar and communications and at the same time solve the Doppler ambiguity. The connection between the instantaneous power of the waveform and the Doppler sidelobes of the ambiguity function are explored. The variance of the Doppler sidelobes, which arises from the random phase coding of the carriers, is connected to the peak to average power ratio of the waveform.

Especially for scenarios setups where receivers of specific services can be grouped, additional information concerning ab area of influence of this service can be utilized to down- or upgrade modulation scheme and coding rate with minimal impact on QoS.

This paper aims at providing different cost-efficient solutions for the channel impairments in tropical areas. In order to extend service to isolated areas, we propose an hybrid architecture based on DVB-S2/RCS + Wi-Fi networks. In this scenario, the delay of the ACM reaction to fade changes can affect the quality of the video transmission, especially because of the characteristics of tropical deep fading events. In order to avoid QoS reduction, we focus on the DVB PHY-layer shifted threshold, which we study not only for different Amazon areas and different rain conditions, but also for different reaction delays. The performance of the PHY-layer selector is evaluated in terms of video quality (PSNR), packet error rate and bandwidth efficiency.
