The use of frequencies in excess of 20 GHz for Earth-space communications is significantly impaired by the effects of the weather phenomena in the troposphere. The main contributing factor is attenuation due to rainfall but at higher frequencies (Q- and V-band 40/50 GHz) cloud attenuation can also be significant. Although small fades can be overcome by adapting the physical layer through changes to modulation, coding scheme and through power control, fades can be so deep that the link is lost. Knowledge of these conditions can help schedule and manage network resources and help reduce interference. This paper discusses the use of propagation models allied to numerical weather prediction and weather radar data to produce real-time and forecast prediction of fades. These can be used to both design and drive instantaneous fade-mitigation techniques.

Iterative reception involves the computation of high quality log-likelihood ratios (LLR) to run efficiently, but the computation complexity of optimal a posteriori probabilities (APP) is exponential in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system dimensions. The list-sequential (LISS) detector achieves near- optimal performance by searching for a list of best candidates inside a tree modelizing the system. As this decoder remains complex, we propose here to modify its cost metric by adding a positive bias term, which accelerates the decoding algorithm. A good optimization of the bias value results in an important drop-off of the complexity while preserving the performance of the classical LISS decoder.

An adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, with a preceded cyclic prefix (PCP) as a signaling link was proposed earlier to address the recent need of flexible transmission techniques in cognitive radio (CR) communications. The flexibility of the PCP-OFDM system relies on the concurrent transmission of OFDM signal and PCP signaling which represents OFDM system parameters including bandwidth, modulation, coding schemes etc. Efficient demodulation of PCP signaling is therefore of great importance for OFDM data recovery and reduce the delay from the system adaption. In this paper, we propose to use a three-stage demodulator to recover the signaling information carried by the PCPs. Design of this three-stage demodulator are analyzed and performance is evaluated through the simulations in different channel conditions. In addition, with proposed peak combining technique, impact of the multipath impairment is mitigated to a great extent. It is observed from the simulation results that this signaling demodulation scheme provides the same performance as the conventional optimal matched filter but with significantly reduced hardware and computational complexity.

Upcoming multi antenna systems such as 3GPP-LTE employ code book based multi-mode preceding in order to adapt to a wide range of channel conditions. Link adaptation, which includes the selection of preceding matrices, the number of spatially multiplexed layers as well as modulation coding schemes is a crucial task, carried out by the receiver. In this contribution we propose link adaption based on the measure of mutual information between the channel input and the linear detector output and evaluate the behavior of the proposed algorithm in spatially correlated and uncorrelated propagation scenarios. The results highlight the importance of proper link adaption in order to mitigate the impact of spatial correlation.

We present an adaptive soft-input soft-output (SISO) turbo equalization receiver for doubly-selective channels. The proposed receiver exploits the complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) for the overall channel variations, and an autoregressive (AR) model for the BEM coefficients. We extend an existing turbo equalization approach based on symbol-wise AR modeling of channels to channels based on BEMs. Simulation examples and an EXIT chart analysis demonstrate that our CE-BEM-based approach outperforms the existing symbol-wise AR model-based turbo equalizer.

With the ever increasing volume of the digital data being generated from our day to day life there is a huge increase in the demand for much faster and denser storage technologies. Conventional two dimensional (surface) storage/memory technologies may soon be replaced with much faster and denser three dimensional volumetric (holographic) storage technologies. Photo sensitive protein Bacteriorhodopsin(BR) has been proven to have great chemical, thermal and holographic properties and is a good choice as a holographic material in volumetric memory design. Balanced modulated codes are used in volumetric memory systems to reduce the bit error rate (BER) and improve the fidelity, currently coding schemes like 6:8 balanced modulated coding are employed which limit the size of the page to 8-bits and achieve a code rate (utility) of 75%. As the volumetric storage technology matures we need efficient algorithms to produce balanced modulation codes with high code rate on bigger page sizes. In this paper we give new algorithms to generate balanced modulation codes which can achieve superior code rates compared to the existing methods to generate balanced modulated codes.

The paper derives a more accurate upper bound for BER for M-QAM than is currently used in the literature. This allows a more thorough analysis of the power adaptation to fading conditions for optimization of spectral efficiency. By taking into account the effect of error coding gain on power adaptation, a 7-state FSMC model for the implementation of the adaptive modulation and coding scheme in WiMAX is proposed.

We consider the problem of joint decoding of signals transmitted from two correlated sources at a destination. In order to achieve high spectral efficiency at a high range of the channel signal-to-noise power (SNR), a high transmission rate is required. In this paper, we design a class of codes for joint-decoding by exploiting bit interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) technique. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is used to evaluate the convergence property as well as to examine the optimality of the system. The simulation results show that the joint decoding with the designed code achieves the performance close to theoretical limits supported by the Slepian-Wolf and Shannon theorems.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive power allocation method for an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system that employs an adaptive modulation and coding(AMC) scheme. Unlike the water-filling scheme that has been aimed to maximize a continuous capacity function, the proposed scheme is to maximize a discrete capacity function that more precisely characterizes the discrete AMC levels. In terms of complexity, numerical results show that the proposed scheme reduces the processing time by more than 80% comparing with greedy adaptive power allocation (APA), and shows as same performance as greedy APA.
