Generally, the capacity-achieving signaling design for a specific channel should consider the joint optimization of channel coding and modulation. Nevertheless, coding theorists and practitioners have recognized that a well-designed LDPC code can achieve capacity-approaching performance universally across a range of data transmission and storage channels. A pronounced example is the forward error correction scheme adopted recently by the second generation standards for digital video broadcasting (DVB), wherein the same LDPC codes are expected to be reused over satellite, terrestrial and cable channels. However, to accommodate the spectral efficiency of different channel type, the coded bits should be mapped to the modulator judiciously. The well-known BICM strategy employs a large random bit interleaver, which typically yields good performance for an arbitrary choice of constellation mapper. However, it is problematic for high-speed coding and modulation due to the large amount of memory and circuits routing required. This motivates us to impose structural simplicity on the bit interleaver configuration so that the coded bits are de-multiplexed systematically into parallel groups to feed the constellation mapper. In this paper, we focus on the design of bit demultiplexers for multi-level modulations by applying the framework of multi-edge type (MET) LDPC. Since the channel-dependence of a given code ensemble is dominated by the mutual information between the input and output of the effective channel, we propose to simplify the analysis of the decoding behavior by using a set of surrogate binary erasure channels (BEC). Simulation results indicate that the proposed bit demultiplexer surpasses the performance of the heuristic interleaving strategy specified in second generation DVB standard for terrestrial channels (DVB-T2).

Cognitive radio promises better spectrum utilisation through decentralised control, sensing and decision making. The devices are intended to be inexpensive, upgradeable and adaptable. However, introducing upgraded devices into a decentralised environment may cause unexpected results, the upgrades may require a critical mass to show any benefit, and may have an adverse impact on existing devices, which may deter their adoption. We study, in simulation, the gradual introduction of cognitive devices into an existing population using a spectrum access etiquette, in three different scenarios for the device capability. We show that the new devices gain immediate benefits, and that there is always an incentive to upgrade. We show that overall spectrum efficiency is improved. Finally, we show that there is no negative impact on existing devices, and that the introduction of cognitive devices may even improve the success rate of lesser devices.

A new iterative channel estimation algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems was proposed based on maximum-likelihood (ML) by using a specially designed training *** proposed channel estimation utilizes the hard-decision information provided by the decoder of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) to exchange the information between the channel estimator and the decoder. In BICM-OFDM systems, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm not only reduces the number of the training symbols but also improves the accuracy of communication system comparing with conventional algorithms.

In this paper, we proposed the compact construction of a matched filter for integrand code, which do not require the high-rate clock pulse in two-valued PWM (pulse width modulation) code, using a real-valued shift-orthogonal finite-length sequence, which has a sharp a periodic autocorrelation function with zero sidelobes except at left and right shift-ends. This matched filters is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) corresponding to 400,000 gates. A proposed matched filter for the sequence of length 129 can be constructed by the circuit scale of about 47% compared with conventional filter.

We consider dynamic spectrum allocation in the downlink between multiple service providers and users, and develop a model that is applicable for many future scenarios. The service providers set prices for spectrum and transmit data to users, who purchase their spectrum. Each provider transmits at a specific power spectral density which is an indicator of the efficiency of the modulation and coding technology used for transmission. A user application is characterized by a utility function of its received rate which is a function of the allocated spectrum, its link gains to the providers and the providers' transmit power spectral densities. The providers satisfy the spectrum requests of the users by purchasing spectrum from a broker. The providers compete to secure the services of the users and to maximize their profits. Using concepts from microeconomics, we characterize the SP price competition game and show that in the optimal solution each provider has its own customer base. We also characterize the prices charged and profits made by the providers and show how they vary with provider efficiencies and spectrum costs charged by the broker.

Exploiting the Adaptive Coded modulation (ACM) mechanism leads to a more spectrum-efficiency since the transmission parameters are dynamically adjusted to accommodate the channel conditions. This improvement is, however, limited when used in satellite environments due to the time-varying nature of the channel conditions. This indeed make harder for the transmitter to match instantaneously the current network conditions with the appropriate ACM parameters. The high delays entailed by accurate network condition measurement and end-to-end reporting, and the feedback propagation are a major hurdles to overcome. In this paper we propose to use channel prediction, instead of using the instantaneous channel state feedback, as a mean to combat the counterproductive effects caused by the feedback latency. Based on the predicted values, we propose a new modulation and code rates (MODCOD) selection algorithm, which considers the measurement impairment by introducing some margins allowing the selection of more robust MODCOD. Further, we propose a sliding window technique as a mean to combat the detrimental effects of the frequent MODCOD switching and the entailed oscillations in the system performance. Simulation results elucidate that the proposed scheme allows a more efficient network resources' utilization while maintains the Bit Error Rate (BER) within an acceptable level.

The stationary probabilities of different modulation and coding schemes (MCS) are required for dimensioning an OFDMA based network. In this paper, we introduce a semi-analytical approach to find out these stationary probabilities for a WiMAX network in downlink (DL) with users served by the best base station (BS). Using Monte Carlo simulations, we find the spatial distributions of effective signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR eff ) for different values of shadowing standard deviation (sigma SH ). With the help of distribution fit, we show that generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution provides a good fit for different frequency reuse schemes. Furthermore, by applying curve fitting, we demonstrate that the parameters of GEV distributions, as a function of (sigma SH ) values, can be expressed using polynomials. These polynomial can then be used off-line (in place of time consuming simulations) to find out GEV cumulative distribution function (CDF), and hence the stationary probabilities of MCS, for any desired value of (sigma SH ). We further show that these polynomials can be used for other cell configurations with acceptable deviation and significant time saving.

In this paper, we consider the problem of resource allocation in the DFT-Spread-OFDMA (DFT-S-OFDMA) uplink. We show that the resource allocation problem can be formulated as a set packing problem, which in general is NP-hard. We propose polynomial-time message-passing based algorithms, one of which is guaranteed to yield a solution that is within a constant fraction of the optimal solution and is also asymptotically optimal in the limit as the number of subcarriers in the system goes to infinity. Our algorithms account for finite input alphabets and non-ideal practical outer codes. Simulations performed to assess their performance demonstrate that they yield near-optimal solutions at a low complexity and with a low memory requirement.

The 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) defined the requirements for the upcoming long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) systems, aiming at peak spectral efficiencies of 30 bit/s/Hz in the downlink and 15 bits/s/Hz in the uplink. These ambitious targets can be accomplished only by using advanced multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna techniques. In this paper, we evaluate closed loop precoded multirank transmission for single carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDM) as selected uplink modulation scheme by using the precoding codebook defined for LTE downlink. Its performance is compared with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Results show that OFDM outperforms SC-FDM for medium-high ranks, but the gap can be reduced by adding further diversity branches. While narrowband precoding shows considerable gain over open loop transmission for all ranks, wideband precoding works with a very small feedback overhead but results to be a valid option mainly for low-rank transmission, where the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of SC-FDM signals is also preserved.
