Based on nonlinear OQPSK (Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) format it is possible to define a wide class of TC-OQAM signals (Trellis Coded-Offset Quadrature Amplitude modulation) with good gains. This paper investigates nonlinear effects in TC-OQAM signals, taking advantage of the the nonlinear OQPSK format. This allows an analytical characterization of the transmitted signals when affected by nonlinear devices such as those inherent to a nonlinear power amplification, which can be used for obtaining the PSD (Power Spectral Density) of the transmitted signals, the design of the optimum receiver as the corresponding performance.

In time-varying channels, channel state information (CSI) is often provided via a feedback channel to facilitate dynamic allocation of resources like transmit power and data rates. In OFDM-based ultra wideband (UWB) channels, the signaling overhead for this CSI feedback can be extremely large. In this paper, we propose several compression schemes for the feedback channel that exploit the temporal and spatial correlation properties of the multiband-OFDM UWB channel, viz., fixed and variable spectral binning techniques, hierarchical binary tree-based spectral compression schemes, and Markov state-based differential temporal compression schemes.

This paper presents the work conducted as part of doctoral research carried out at ISAE and ONERA on dynamic Radio Resource Management techniques for DVB-RCS systems using Fade Mitigation Techniques at Ka band. For a system using Adaptive coding and modulation at its physical layer the problem of optimally apportioning the satellite carriers' among the many different waveforms, or modes, available becomes crucial to its efficiency. In current DVB-RCS systems the carriers' waveforms are defined during system design. In this work a process to dynamically define carrier waveforms during system operation, based on prevailing traffic and propagation conditions, is proposed whereby the system available capacity, and QoS are shown, via simulations, to improve compared to a static definition.

Multiple access schemes are used to allow many mobile users to share simultaneously a finite amount of radio spectrum. For high quality communications, this must be done without severe degradation in the performance of the system. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is one of the major multiple access techniques used now days to share the available bandwidth in a wireless communication system. CDMA systems are characterised by multipath interference. Rake receivers are commonly used in CDMA systems to restrict the multipath fading and provide efficient reception. These receivers collect the time-shifted versions of the transmitted signal, combine them and produce the strongest estimate of the original signal. This paper discusses the various structures of Rake receivers such as multiple antennas single Rake finger, single antenna multiple Rake fingers, multiple antennas multiple Rake fingers and performs the bit error rate (BER) comparison. BPSK modulation and code modulation are considered for spreading the original signal. Space diversity (Antenna diversity) technique is employed at the receiver.

Optimal selection of the settings of a DVB-H system will be presented to maximize the coverage for indoor reception for a given throughput requirement. The performance of the system will be evaluated by measurements for different modulation schemes, guard intervals, and MPE-FEC rates. Based on trial results, optimal transmission parameters will be selected for a DVB-H network. This optimization will allow broadcasters and companies to select optimal transmitting settings for future DVB-H trials and deployments.

We describe new methods that solve well-known problems associated with high throughput, robust communication in underwater environments. By robust, we imply simultaneous increases in enabled underwater communication data rates, range, and reliability. Our methods borrow concepts from advanced multi-carrier modulation using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), multiple input multiple output (MIMO) space time codes (e.g. Alamouti diversity), and zero carrier frequency ultra wideband (UWB) wireless. In addition, we discuss system optimization involving the elimination of the phase synthesizer and analog mixer through direct sampling of the RF antenna port.

In this paper a new permutation zone which combines adjacent and distributed subcarrier permutation is proposed for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems. For such purpose two types of burst are defined: localized and distributed. A new resource allocation and scheduling algorithm that exploits such structure is then proposed. Furthermore, the effects of limited feedback are also investigated where only the n-best subchannel quality metrics are feedback. As shown in the simulation results, a tradeoff between spectral efficiency, delay and load signaling requirements is obtained which can be adjusted by modifying the number of subchannels signaled in the uplink. Additionally, the proposed scheme turns out to be a very efficient way to increase the system fairness and therefore improving the quality of service.

Space-time modulation exploiting diversity or/and coding gains has been a major focus in high-speed wireless communications systems against channel fading. We employ noncoherent space-time modulation in cyclic-prefix (CP) based single-carrier (SC) block systems over frequency selective Rayleigh block fading channels, where channel order, upper-bounded by the CP length, is assumed known. Capitalizing on multi-channel input-output relation for time-domain processing, we reveal that employing complex orthogonal m-sequences can enable a simplified maximum-likelihood (ML) detector. Further, code construction is addressed so as to adaptation of a variety of transmission rates and trellis-coded unitary space-time modulation is also investigated. Numerical results suggest that this noncoherent space-time modulation for SC block system, coupled with time-domain ML detection, can realize multipath diversity under certain circumstances.

We demonstrate for the first time improved program, erase, and endurance for charge trap flash TaN-Al 2 O 3 -Si 3 N 4 -ldquoTunnel-oxide (TO)rdquo-Si MOSFETs through band engineered tunnel oxides (BETO). Several high-K dielectrics (HfO 2 , HfSiO, Al 2 O 3 , Si 3 N 4 ) and tunnel stack sequences (SiO 2 -high-k, SiO 2 -high-k-SiO 2 ) are compared. New results are as follows: SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (OA) BE-TO and SiO 2 /Si 3 N 4 /SiO 2 (ONO) BE-TO DeltaVth windows improve >300% vs. standard SiO 2 -TO. Both OA and ONO stacks endure P/E cycles to at least 100 K cycles maintaining a window >4V. Results are consistent with a model based on high-k conduction/valence band offsets. Increased erase efficiency for BE-TO enables improved endurance without sacrificing P/E window due to lower P/E voltage stressing. These large, enduring windows are favorable for multi-level cell application and may extend TANOS flash beyond the 20 nm node.

In this paper, we present a new solution to the well-known integer bit loading problem for Power Line Communication systems, that is able to jointly consider transmission rate and bit error rate (BER) as performance parameters. This goal is achieved by means of a Trellis Coded modulation (TCM), by taking advantage of its appealing property to combine modulation and coding, so as to state the power allocation problem as an optimization in which both BER and rate are tied to the TCM optimal design. The need to compare such a scheme with others known in the Literature in terms of performances, led us to give a brief insight into the two standard approaches: Maximum Rate (MR) and Minimum BER (MB), which consider as objective functions only rate or BER, respectively. Numerical results are presented to stress how our solution improve system performances, both in ideal condition and with additional impairments such as crosstalk and impulsive noise.
