Grouping modulation with different codes for improving performance in cVEP-based brain-computer interfaces

A novel paradigm for building code modulated visual evoked potential (cVEP) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is proposed. The paradigm is based on grouping modulation of stimuli with different codes in order to increase the number of stimuli and resulting information transfer rate (ITR). In a single group, an original code and its circularly shifting codes are used for modulating 16 stimuli. To achieve good separability of stimuli, the original codes for different groups should have good autocorrelation and cross-correlation properties. A pair of Golay complementary series and an almost perfect autocorrelation sequence are used as the original codes to implement a three-group cVEP BCI with 48 targets. Four subjects participated in a simulated online experiment and a high ITR of 129.58 bits/min was achieved due to the sharp increase of the number of targets.

In this paper, we investigate and analyze modulation-based detect-and-forward (MDeF) relaying for the noncoherent ultra-wideband cooperative system under Nakagami-m fading environments, which can cover a wide range of fading conditions. The MDeF relaying is performed based on the codeword modulation and detects symbols through the codeword mapping process and signal waveform aggregation scheme with good noise/interference mitigation. The proposed MDeF relaying is shown that the upper bound of the average bit error probability matches well to numerical counterpart as signal-to-noise ratio becomes larger and outperforms the conventional DeF relaying.

A novel scheme for optimum joint bit and power loading for link adaptation in discrete Fourier transform modulated filter bank based transceivers for underlay cognitive radio is proposed aiming to minimize the secondary user average bit-error rate for bit-interleaved coded modulation and to increase the spectral efficiency. The proposed scheme is subject to a stochastic chance-based constraint as well as a colored Gaussian interference caused by a third-party interference. The performance analysis shows that a bit-error rate saturation of schemes employing exclusive power or bit loading can be avoided over a large range of the average expected bit-energy-to-interference-plus-noise ratio which is mandatory for improving the spectral efficiency of cognitive radio systems.

In previous studies, a very sparse low-density parity-check (LDPC) code was designed for triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash using non-Gray mapping, which is able to achieve comparable error-rate performance to the conventional Gray mapping-based scheme. Although a sparse LDPC code can be of benefit to hardware implementations of an iterative demodulation and decoding (IDD) scheme, difficulties emerge, such as latency issue between the decoder and demodulator, when compared to non-IDD schemes. In this paper, a hardware-friendly structure interleaver is used such that a shuffle-based IDD scheme can be realized efficiently. Compared to the conventional Gray-based non-IDD scheme and layered-based IDD scheme, the proposed shuffled-based IDD scheme can provide a better hardware efficiency and better error-rate performance.

We propose a coded MIMO system with two-stage interference cancellation aiming at improvement of fixed-complexity decoder performance through the use of cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code. At the initial stage, the conventional linear detector based on the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion is employed, followed by the channel decoder. Per-antenna interference cancellation is then applied to the signals that are detected to be correct by the CRC test. Prior to the second channel decoder, a fixed-complexity MIMO detector such as QR-decomposition (QRD)-M-algorithm and the fixed-complexity sphere decoding (FSD) with parallel candidate adding (PCA) is employed. The overall system is shown to improve the MIMO decoder performance significantly, while reducing average computational complexity. The use of per-antenna adaptive modulation is also proposed, which can further enhance the throughput of the proposed system.

The performance assessment of a novel multilevel modulation format based on partial-response signalling called absolute added correlative coding (AACC) by numerical simulations is delineated, targeting short-range and interconnect high-speed optical networks. The spectral efficiency, chromatic dispersion tolerance and receiver sensitivity of 4-instensity level AACC are discussed and compared against other well-known existing modulation formats, namely, non-return-to-zero on-off keying and 4-ary pulse-amplitude modulation (4-PAM). The robustness of the higher order of AACC over 8-PAM and 16-PAM is also discussed.

The DVB-T2 terrestrial television standard is becoming increasingly important, and have been extensively studied and developed to provide many types of services with higher spectral efficiency and better performance. The Physical Layer Pipes in DVB-S2 are logical channels carrying one or more services with modulation scheme and robustness. The main changes are found in the physical layer where DVB-T2 incorporates a new physical layer pipe (PLP). Each physical layer pipe contains an individual configuration of modulation, coding and interleaving. This new concept allows a transmission with multiple physical layer pipes where each service can be transmitted with different physical layer configuration. The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC3.0) standard will add value to broadcasting services, allowing a extending reach by adding new business models, providing higher quality, improved accessibility, personalization and interactivity and more flexible and efficient use of the spectrum.

In multi-level-cell memory, such as flash and phase-change memory, shrinking cell size and the growing number of levels per cell worsen the access rate to capacity ratio and even reduce access rate. We present minimal maximum-level programming, a scheme for expediting cell programming by sharing physical cells among multiple data sectors and exploiting the fact that making moderate changes to a cell's charge level is faster than making large ones. In particular, we encode the data such that in the kth writing of data to a cell, only the lowest k+1 levels are utilized. Unlike in previously proposed cell-sharing schemes, different same-size data sectors occupy different numbers of physical cells, and a cell may hold a fraction of a bit of a given data sector. Nevertheless, the exposed sector size remains unchanged. Data are encoded, but without redundancy. In a four-level cell example, we achieve up to 75% reduction in write latency. Read latency may be degraded, depending on the percentage of utilized capacity.

Coverage analysis of downlink cellular orthogonal frequency- division multiple- access networks using moment generating functions

In this study, the coverage of downlink cellular orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access networks transmitting one quadrature-amplitude modulation symbol per hop is analysed. The coverage probability is first defined by using an upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of a bit-interleaved coded modulation system. Moreover then, the moment generating functions of the legacy Gaussian and Laplacian metrics (LMs) for soft-decision decoding of an employed error-correcting code are derived for computing the upper bound on the BER and the corresponding coverage probability of the networks. Numerical results demonstrate that due to the impulsive nature of the inter-cell interference for moderate-to-small cell loads, the networks using the LM for soft-decision decoding significantly outperform those employing the legacy Gaussian metric in terms of the achievable cell radius and the amount of the average transmit power reduction.
