Elimination of two-dimensional intersymbol interference through the use of a 9/12 two-dimensional modulation code

This study presents a 9/12 two-dimensional (2D) modulation code as a way to overcome 2D intersymbol interference (ISI) in high-density storage systems. The next generation of data-storage systems is being continually developed to satisfy a massive demand for reliable storage regarding enormous amounts of data. Holographic data storage, bit-patterned media recording (BPMR), and 2D magnetic recording are promising candidates for the attainment of area-density increases that are beyond the capacities of conventional storage systems. One of the main challenges for these systems is a 2D ISI problem consisting of 1D ISI from neighbour bits and intertrack interference from adjacent tracks. The proposed modulation code maps every 9 bit sequence of user data into a 2D output array of a 3-by-4 size so that the fatal 2D ISI patterns are avoided in every output array. For the assessment of the quality of the proposed modulation code, a simulation model is carried out in a BPMR system. The results show that the proposed modulation code offers a gain of approximate to 2 dB over that of a system without encoding. In particular, a gain of approximate to 1 dB is obtained over that of a 6/8 modulation code regarding the same code rate.

Doubly iterative multiple-input-multiple-output-bit-interleaved coded modulation receiver with joint channel estimation and randomised sampling detection

In this study, the authors propose a lattice reduction (LR)-based doubly iterative receiver for joint channel estimation and detection in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) bit-interleaved coded modulation systems. For the inner iteration loop of the receiver, LR-based randomised sampling detection is employed to enjoy the tradeoff between performance and complexity while for the outer iteration loop, the expectation-maximisation (EM)-based iterative channel estimation using sampling results is proposed to achieve the maximum likelihood channel estimation performance. Besides, a modified computational efficient EM-based channel estimation approach is also derived to reduce the complexity further. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed doubly MIMO iterative receiver can have comparable bit-error rate performance with a reasonable computational complexity.

Optimisation of chaos-based coded modulations for compensation of amplifier non-linearities

The possibilities of a known class of chaos-based coded modulation (CCM) systems are expanded to address the problem of high-power amplifier (HPA) non-linearity. The hypothesis is that the CCM non-linear nature can be exploited to counteract its effects on the system perfomance, avoiding the need of a predistorter. An optimisation method for the design of the CCM to prove this hypothesis is proposed. The results show that, for a given back-off level, a non-linear mapping function for the chaos-based encoder and decoder can be designed to compensate the HPA effect on the error rate.

Joint Successive Cancellation Decoding for Bit-Interleaved Polar Coded modulation

To improve the performance of bit-interleaved polar-coded modulation (BIPCM), a joint successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm for BIPCM is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the correlation between coded bits, which are mapped into the same symbol is considered. Based on the recursive structure of the proposed algorithm, the demapping and deinterleaving units are combined with SC decoder. Thus, the information bits are directly decoded by the likelihood ratios (LRs) of the received symbols instead of the LRs of coded bits. Simulation results show that the performance of existing BIPCM schemes can be improved 0.75-1.25 dB with the proposed algorithm.

Lattice-reduction-aided (LRA) preequalisation for the multiple-input/multiple-output broadcast channel has most often been considered for the uncoded case so far. However, recent advantages in the closely related field of integer-forcing equalisation, where the cancellation of the multiuser interference and the channel coding are combined, create doubt to this separated point of view. In this Letter, the philosophy of matching both the channel code and the complex-valued signal constellation to the same finite-field arithmetic is proposed. The consequences on the factorisation task present in LRA preequalisation are discussed and covered by numerical performance evaluations based on non-binary low-density parity-check codes.

This paper presents the first demonstration of a shear-horizontal mode Lithium Niobate dispersive delay line, featuring a center frequency of 250 MHz, a delay-bandwidth (TB) product of 100, an electromechanical coupling (k 2 ) in excess of 35%, and a low insertion loss of 10 dB. The high compression is attained via a large bandwidth of 125 MHz, centered at 250 MHz, and an extensive delay of 0.8 μS. The device shown herein has greatly outperformed the state of the art, namely surface acoustic wave delay lines which typically have an insertion loss over 25 dB for a comparable compression ratio. The attained performance can be attributed to the excellent piezoelectric coupling of lamb waves in a suspended Lithium Niobate X-cut thin film. A voltage gain of 3 has been demonstrated for instantaneously amplifying chirp-coded signals, a feature that can be harnessed to enhance signal to noise ratio in low power wake-up radios for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

This paper presents the system design method to determine the modulation and coding schemes according to the given usage models of single carrier transmission in millimeter wave Wireless LAN systems. Various modulation and coding combinations are compared and analyzed based on the BER performance over both AWGN and fading channels. The effects of hardware impairments including power amplifier non-linear effects and phase noise, etc., are considered as well. The system design strategy provides a guideline for the selection of modulation and coding schemes in practical which can fulfill the realistic system requirements.

A novel multi-dimensional coded modulation based on Eisenstein integer Z[omega] is proposed for physical-layer network coding (PNC) over the finite field F-4 in the two-way relay channel (TWRC). The duo-binary turbo code is used to design the Construction A-based Z [omega]-lattice for the proposed PNC over the lattice partition F-4 congruent to Z [omega]/2Z[omega]. In order to improve the spectral efficiency, Ungerboeck's mapping by set partitioning (MSP) is adopted for transmission of coded and uncoded layers of the designed Construction A-based Z [omega]-lattice. A novel soft-demapper and a new ML decoder with size-reduced search space are proposed to decode the superimposed lattices at the relay. A new mapping selection criterion which maximizes the mutual information between the received signal and the network coded combination is introduced for the proposed softdemapper. Numerical results show that the proposed PNC over F-4 is superior to compute-and-forward using integer-forcing and channel decoder [5, 10].

Performance optimisation for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative demapping with max-log- maximum a posterior detection

Max-log-maximum a posterior (MAP) detection is preferred in practical systems rather than log-MAP because of its lower complexity, but also suffers from a considerable performance loss. In this study, the authors focus on the performance optimisation for (doped) bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative demapping schemes where max-log-MAP detection is employed. First, they study the effects of max-log-MAP detection to the extrinsic information transfer curves of the (doped) demapper and decoder, and reselect the constellation labelling. Second, they find that the small difference between max-log-MAP and log-MAP detection in each iteration would be accumulated during the whole iterative procedure referred to as error accumulation, which causes a large performance loss, and consequently they propose some methods to control the error accumulation. Owing to the labelling reselection and error-accumulation control, the proposed scheme exhibits several tenths to 1 dB gains, compared with the conventional schemes, while maintaining low complexity.

A smartphone without Internet is obsolete in today's world. With multitude of applications hosted in the personal handheld devices, the need of high speed Internet access has increased manifold. On one hand, in order to meet these demands, LTE-A (a.k.a. 4G) started a new era of improved network capacity as well as higher bandwidth availability to each user, while on the other hand the resource allocation for users has emerged as an active research area. Parameters such as number of users, channel conditions, type of traffic class and so on play an important role while designing a scheduling algorithm. In this paper, LTE resource scheduling algorithms from the literature are presented with their pros and cons and Inverse Weighted Fair Queuing (IWFQ) as well as Proportional Fair Inverse Weighted Fair Queuing (PFIWF) algorithms are proposed. Also, simulation results are shown to outperform the existing algorithms and finally, fair distribution of radio resources and the overall system throughput by effectively using the radio frequency spectrum is outlined.
