In a bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) system, reducing the spacing between adjacent bit islands in the down- and cross-track directions increases areal density;however, two-dimensional (2-D) interference comprising intersymbol and intertrack interferences degrades the system performance. To mitigate error patterns that increase the 2-D interference in BPMRs, 2-D modulation coding schemes have been proposed. In this letter, we present a modulation code and its decoding using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) for BPMRs. modulation decoding using an MLP can achieve significantly better performance than that using the minimum Euclidean distance, which is generally used to decode received modulated data. Similarly, when comparing the system performance at the same user density, modulation decoding using an MLP at 3 Tb/in(2) shows better performance than an uncoded system (partial response maximum-likelihood detector) at 2 Tb/in(2).

The 2-D interference consisting of intersymbol and intertrack interferences is a major impairment in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR), especially at high-areal density (AD). One solution to mitigate the effect of 2-D interference is to apply a 2-D coding scheme on an input data sequence before recording so as to avoid some data patterns that easily cause an error at the data detection process. Nonetheless, this method usually requires many redundant bits, thus lowering a code rate. This paper proposes a rate-8/9 modulation code for a multitrack multihead BPMR system to eliminate the data patterns that lead to severe 2-D interference. Simulation results indicate that the system with the proposed code is superior to that without coding, especially when the AD is high and/or the position jitter is large. Specifically, for the system without position jitter at bit-error rate of 10(-5), the proposed system can provide 1.8 dB gain over the system without coding at the AD of 2.5 Tb/in(2).

In bit-patterned media recording (BPMR), the readback signal is severely corrupted by the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-track interference (ITI), especially at high recording densities, due to small bit and track pitches. One way to alleviate the ITI effect is to encode an input data sequence before recording, so as to avoid some data patterns that easily cause an error at the data detection process. This paper proposes an ITI-mitigating 5/6 modulation code for a multi-track multi-head BPMR system to eliminate the data patterns that lead to severe ITI. Specifically, each of the 5 user bits is converted into a 6-bit codeword in the form of a 3-by-2 data array, based on a look-up table. Experimental results indicate that the system with the proposed coding scheme outperforms that without coding, especially when an areal density is high and/or the position jitter is large.

The degradation of reconstructed images from a digital holographic memory that uses highly sensitive strontium barium niobate as a recording medium was reduced using two-dimensional modulation codes that have low average intensity and high coding efficiency. The signal-to-noise ratios of the reconstructed images and hence the bit error rates of the data retrieved from the images were improved without reducing the coding efficiency.

The proposed code is partitioned into 16 codeword subsets and is decoded in conjunction with Viterbi algorithm. The results of numerical simulations and actual recording experiments show that 9-12PBC gives favorable trade-off between code rate and bit error rate(BER) performance.

Our two-dimensional modulation code improves the decoding accuracy of images reconstructed from a multilayered waveguide holographic memory that have been translated, rotated, and distorted with respect to the image detector, The reconstructed images can be decoded without using a precision mechanical structure or an imaging mechanism that matches pixels of the reconstructed images to the pixel grid of the image detector. This code also improves the bit error rate of distorted reconstructed images and reduces crosstalk among different layers and image detector saturation.

The Gray-mapped constant weight modulation code (GCWMC) is evaluated by use of simulated POM data pages. Basing on the structure of multi-layer parallel-accessed disc, current modulation code is optimized to achieve higher density storage. Two problems, which may be serious after the optimization, are discussed: acceptable jitter and synchronization process of PLL. A novel method for procuring combined signal of channel bit clock for multi-layer disc is proposed, which satisfies the requirements of PLL. The novel method is at last proved by probabilistic theory. At the end of this paper, parameters of RLL for multi-layer disc are presented: d=4, k=10similar to15. These new parameters improve the track-density by 15%similar to20%.
