We report theoretical and experimental results on adaptive gas pumping by actively controlling microvalve timing in a multi-stage peristaltic micropump. Since gas is compressible, control of timing of the valve actuation relative to pump membrane actuation can modulate gas compression and transfer periods, resulting in adaptive and programmable pumping. A peristaltic 18-stage electrostatic gas micropump that utilizes fluidic resonance for high flow rate and multi-stage peristaltic configuration for high pressure is fabricated and tested. It includes 10 inlet and 9 outlet microvalves. When the duration of time when microvalves are opened is changed between 0.05 and 0.35 cycles, the micropump produced wide ranges of pressure between 7.3 and 3.3 kPa and flow rates between 0.29 and 0.07 sccm. These results correspond to a variation of pressure and flow rate by 110% and 400%, respectively.

In this paper, we investigate a solution to work out the parameters of a secondary user network composed of cognitive radios that fit into spectrum holes offered by primary user networks. The parameters considered here for each cognitive radio are the carrier frequency, the bandwidth, the transmit power and the modulation/coding format schemes. We first derive a unique cost function for the optimization problem that takes into account the constraints. Then, we investigate the use of genetic algorithm to resolve the optimization problem and show the secondary network parameters obtained after convergence.

In this paper, we study Bayesian and hybrid Cramer-Rao bounds (BCRB and HCRB) for the code-aided (CA) dynamical phase estimation of QAM modulated signals. In order to avoid the calculus of the inverse of the Bayesian information matrix and of the hybrid information matrix, we present some analytical expressions for the various CRBs, which greatly reduce the computation complexity.

This paper proposes a blind modulation detection technique for adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (adaptive OFDM) communications. Adaptive modulations are applied to improve communication performance in OFDM over complicated multi-path fading channels. This paper proposes a new method which reduces detection errors in blind modulation and improves communication throughput in adaptive OFDM systems. The new proposed is based on statistical methods using a combination of distance histogram and phase histogram methods. It can improve communication performance and increases a data rate by not sending side information about modulation modes. The proposed method has showed better blind detection performance at lower SNR regions than the previous method.

Orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is a multi-carrier transmission technique that has been recently recognized as an excellent method for high speed bi-directional wireless data communication and it is one of the strong candidates as multiple access technique for the next generation of downlink receivers In this paper we aim to investigate the effect of fading channel on the performance of the IEEE 802.16e based OFDMA system with different code rate and modulation schemes using the bit-error rates (BER) versus the bit energy-to-noise density ratio (Eb/No) curves. The obtained graph can be used to set threshold signal to noise ratio (SNR), so that adaptive modulation schemes can be used to attain highest transmission speed with a target BER.

In this paper a soft relaying scheme for coded relay networks combining the benefits of classical Decode-Forward (DF) and Amplify-Forward (AF) is extended to higher order modulation schemes. In order to minimize the mean-squared- error at the destination, the conditional expectation value of the symbol after soft-output channel decoding at the relay is transmitted. The main idea of this scheme called Decode- Estimate-Forward (DEF) is to exploit coding gain like DF while still preserving reliability information as AF. This approach was presented by the authors for BPSK in coded systems, but the extension to arbitrary modulation alphabets presented here allows for more flexible system designs. The performance of the proposed relay function is compared to classical AF and DF in a wide variety of scenarios like AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels as well as different numbers and constellations of relays.

This paper describes a DVB-S2 based adaptive air interface designed to meet the performance constraints of bidirectional satellite communication links to be established in a post-disaster emergency situation in Ku/Ka and Q/V bands where strong channel impairments occur. The proposed solution allows to establish very quickly a minimal low bit rate satellite return link, using the available resources of a primary geostationary satellite system, and very small, low-cost and power-limited dedicated ground terminals. The focus is placed on: (i) the principle and performance analysis of the adaptive strategy that was devised using the DVB-S2 modulation and coding (ACM) scheme along with other techniques, (ii) the implementation of the transmission channel simulation model within the Juzzle open source environment software, and (iii) the preliminary simulation results obtained.

We propose a novel adaptive interleaving scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Based on the channel state information, the approach selects one interleaver from a pool of candidate interleavers. As the selected one is expected to have larger minimum Euclidean distance (MED) at receiver, the technique can significantly improve the decoding error rate performance. Compared with the adaptive interleaving schemes proposed in literatures, the proposed scheme has no interleaving pattern synchronization problem and requires only a few bits for the signaling.

In this paper, we investigate the capacity of CSMA (carrier sense multiple access) based wireless multi-hop networks with random topologies described by the hop length distribution. First we develop an analytical model for the effective link capacity as a function of transmit power adaptation policy, physical carrier sense threshold, hop length distribution and medium access probability of p-persistent CSMA. Secondly, we devise an optimal transmit power control scheme that maximizes the network capacity by adjusting the transmit power and the corresponding physical carrier sense threshold. Thereafter, it is extended for the joint optimization of these parameters with the medium access probability of CSMA. Finally we compare the optimal power control scheme with the minimum transmit power policy in. Results show that the proposed power control scheme optimally trades off the spatial reuse (number of interfering links) to the link SIR (signal-to-interference ratio) and achieves an amount of ~%15 increase in network capacity when both schemes employ joint optimization.

Airborne sonar is a robust sensing modality that has gained its popularity as a reliable and inexpensive means of determining the range to the closest obstacle. Nevertheless, it is impossible to extract bearing information from a single transducer if classical Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurements are used. For this reason, many sensors have been proposed in the last years that locate objects in the horizontal plane making use of several transducers and triangulation techniques. This work proposes a new system that combines pulse compression with the modern spectrum-based localization techniques to obtain precise bearing information from a single transducer.
