We consider a single user MIMO-OFDM system where spatial multiplexing is applied and formulate rate allocation algorithms to adapt the used modulation alphabet on a per subcarrier basis. As a means to consider the system behavior including the channel code regarding bit or frame error rate (BER, FER) versus normalized average mutual information (NAMI) of an OFDM symbol for several M-QAM alphabets is investigated. To this end an approximation to the mutual information of MIMO systems with M-QAM signal alphabets is derived and compared to channel decomposition approaches to find a complexity/accuracy trade-off. Based on the mutual information results two algorithms using this channel knowledge are introduced. On the one hand, the error rates can be optimized assuming a fixed rate requirement and on the other hand the achieved transmission rate can be optimized under a BER/FER constraint. In both cases a NAMI threshold derived from the simulated system behavior for a specific channel code is used to adapt the allocated modulation alphabets via a greedy algorithm to achieve the target NAMI within an error margin.

The mobile WiMAX systems based on IEEE 802.16e-2005 provide high data rate for the mobile wireless network. However, the link quality is frequently unstable owing to the long-distance and air interference and therefore impacts real-time applications. Thus, a bandwidth allocation algorithm is required to be modulation-aware, while further satisfying the latency guarantee, service differentiation and fairness. This work proposes the Highest Urgency First (HUF) algorithm to conquer the above challenges by taking into consideration the adaptive modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and the urgency of requests. Downlink and uplink sub-frames are determined by reserving the bandwidth for the most urgent requests and proportionating the remaining bandwidth for others. Then, independently in the downlink and uplink, the HUF allocates bandwidth to every mobile station according to a pre-calculated U-factor which considers urgency, priority and fairness. Simulation results prove the HUF is modulation-aware and achieves the above three objectives, notably the zero violation rate within system capacity as well as the throughput paralleling to the best of the existing approaches.

We present a simple yet effective scheme of trellis coded modulation (TCM) codes using partially overlapped signal subsets as a shaping technique. The optimum enlargement of the QAM signal constellation is reported. We show that 2-state TCM with 4 partially overlapped signal subsets has a coding gain of 2.5 dB in comparison with uncoded transmission, which is about 0.5 dB higher than the Ungerboeck TCM code with the same number of states. The construction is then extended to any number of trellis states using 4-, 8-, 16-way partitions of the QAM constellation.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system is a key technology for future high speed wireless communication standards like 802.11n, WIGWAM, and WiMax. These standards require support for multiple modulation and coding schemes. Hence, the receiver hardware should be able to accomodate these schemes preferably on a single reconfigurable architecture. Current MIMO detector implementations are constrained by the throughput and dynamic reconfigurability requirements. This paper presents an FPGA implementation of a novel MIMO detector architecture which addresses these issues. The proposed design is able to reconfigure on the fly without significant latency overhead and delivers quasi-optimal Bit Error Rate(BER). The regularity of the architecture makes it suitable for a highly parallel and pipelined implementation. Our design is implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA, and has a parallelism factor of four with four pipeline stages. Additionally, the design does not use multipliers, and has minimal control overhead(0.3%). Our detector achieves a throughput of 280 Mbps for QPSK, 140 Mbps for 16-QAM, and 52.5 Mbps for 64-QAM. The detector, with a non-processor based control unit, has many qualities of a systolic architecture which makes it highly suitable for ASIC implementation.

In this paper, a digital watermarking system based on vector quantization is presented. Each vector containing N samples is mapped on the surface of the hyperspheres each of which are associated with a message to embed the digital watermark. We called this method vector quantization index modulation (VQIM) since it is conventional QIM in the N-dimensional space. The performance of the method and its comparison to orthogonal code-based watermarking is investigated. Furthermore, we implemented the VQIM method on a real audio watermarking system and adopted it with the human auditory system. The experimental results show the robustness of this scheme against common attacks in audio watermarking such as MP3 compression, lowpass filtering, resampling etc.

A new programmable duty cycle corrector (PDCC) with variable duty cycle of output clock and synchronization of the input clock and output clock is proposed. Since the conventional pulse-width control circuits can adjust duty cycle but canpsilat synchronize the input and output clocks, the proposed PDCC uses a 2 nd -order Delta-Sigma modulator to produce more several kinds of duty-cycle selection of clock signals with a 7-bit resolution. Simulated in a 0.18 um CMOS technology, the proposed PDCC can operate from 500 MHz to 800 MHz and the duty-cycle range of input clock can be operated from 10% to 90%. Moreover, the duty cycle of the output clock can be adjusted from 25% to 75% in a fine step of 0.78%.

The paper addresses the CPM class of the modulation passing through the parametric channel with the factor graph decoding inherently coping with the channel parameter. The combination of the discrete channel symbols with continuous valued channel parameter leads generally to complex mixture densities difficult to cope in the sum-product algorithm message updates in the factor graph. We attack the problem by, first, performing the factor graph operations in phase-space domain, and, second, by defining proper canonical densities described by a limited set of parameters. We derive proper factor and variable node update rules respecting the modulo 2*pi nature of the phase operations. We evaluate the error rate performance and compare it against the brute-force marginalization rules.

Multi-path reflections can cause GPS receiver devices to mis-calculate their location. Errors due to multi-path will tend to bias the position estimate from the true value. The redundancy of satellites can be utilized to identify a single source of error. The estimated residual error is an artifact of the least squares estimate process. After the estimate is computed, the residual estimate error from each satellite should be uniform. If it is not, the satellite signal associated with the largest errors may have come to the receiver along a reflected path. Once identified, the corrupted pseudo-range can be removed from the estimator. The detection technique is described. A simulation study is undertaken to determine the best detection threshold for typical use scenarios.

This paper focuses on the impact of the radio link control protocol (RLC) combined with the Iub congestion control on the performance of high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) networks. The paper investigates the performance enhancement achieved by the RLC AM (acknowledged mode) with the deployment of the Iub congestion control in the HSUPA network. To show the effect of the RLC AM in the uplink, it was compared against the RLC TM (transparent mode). Although RLC TM is not part of the HSPA specification but the aim of the comparison is to highlight and sustain the advantages gained by deploying the RLC AM. The investigations are carried out for a limited TNL network offering a low Iub link bandwidth (which is usually the case for most operators due to high cost of the Iub link), where RLC AM can effectively work with the TNL congestion control in order to optimize the end user goodput performance and the efficient utilization of the overall network resources. This paper also compares the performance of the RLC AM with two different configurations, one combined with the Iub congestion control and another without the Iub congestion control.
