Based on adaptive theory, an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with adaptive Turbo receiver is designed to increase the overall capacity and decrease the processing delay. The scheme sets several factors including channel coding rate, modulation mode and iteration times of Turbo receiver as adjustable elements. To guarantee the superiority of the proposed adaptive Turbo receiver in terms of decreasing processing delay and power consuming, an MMSE based no-ordered parallel soft interference cancellation (NOPSIC) MIMO detector which takes error propagation into account is explored for the non-first iteration. Simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme could significantly raise the system capacity, meanwhile bring down overall times of iteration processing by nearly one third.

In this paper, we propose an extended link adaptation (ELA) technique to maximize the transmission rate of cooperative networks. Unlike the average link adaptation, the ELA not only adapts the modulation and coding levels but also switches among various transmission schemes according to the channel conditions. Quality of service (QoS) consideration is integrated in the design of the ELA. Outage probability optimization based optimal power allocation is investigated to further improve the performance. Simulation results show that with the ELA, the two merits of cooperation, improved transmission rate and increased coverage, can be further effectively enhanced. Furthermore, the optimal switching point of various transmission schemes is also found to achieve the maximal transmission rate.

In this paper, we present a fourth-order single-bit delta-sigma modulator with wide dynamic range. This modulator is suitable for distributed sensor and audio codec applications. This chip was fabricated in a 0.18- mum one-poly, four-metal CMOS technology, and occupies 1.22-mm 2 active area. The circuit is clocked at 3.2 MHz and the overall power consumption is 5.6 mW from a 3.0 V power supply. Experimental results show a maximum dynamic range of 99 dB within a 20- kHz bandwidth.

The ACELP coding algorithm has been widely adopted in standard speech coders due to the advantages of codebook storage and the efficient search schemes. Especially, the focused search and depth first tree search that are very efficient methods to reduce dramatically the search complexity while providing a good sub optimal solution. The pulse location prediction and pulse replacement are already proposed to reduce complexity and provide improvements. In this paper, we propose two fast methods based on pulse replacement and pulse location prediction. In these proposed methods, the total computations are reduced with almost imperceptible degradation in performance and even better efficiency for large number of code replacements. The efficiency and complexity of proposed methods are examined on GSM-EFR coder and compared with depth first tree, pulse replacement and pulse location prediction methods.

Cooperative relay communication systems has been extensively studied in recent years due to their ability to provide more reliable communications through enhanced diversity and to extend the range of the communication system. Equipping communication terminals with multiple antennas have similar advantages. In this paper, we look at a cooperative diversity system where the source node is equipped with multiple antennas. Assuming that the channel state information is available, we derive the optimal beamforming vector to maximize the capacity of the system. We will compare the optimal beamforming solution with a partially optimized solution. We will also investigate the impact of multiple relay nodes and increasing the available antennas at the source on the performance of the system.

This paper proposes a novel algorithm which enables an ARQ protocol defined for IEEE 802.16e to vary the packet size depending on wireless channel behaviour. The algorithm adopts an analytical approach for dynamically evaluating the optimal packet size. The latter is derived from an expression of the ARQ protocol efficiency, obtained by exploiting a finite-state Markov error model which also considers Adaptive modulation/coding. The effectiveness of the designed algorithm in improving TCP performance has been evaluated.

This paper presents the implementation of a digital communications transmitter that includes a Space Time Block Encoder in an APEX20KE FPGA device from Altera. The developed transmitter includes oscillators that provide passband I-Q modulation. The complete transmitter design is appropriate for evaluation of space time block codes as well as different digital passband modulation schemes. With the reconfigurable properties of FPGA's, evaluations and new designs can be developed easily in a hardware platform. The implementation of the proposed transmitter is described, as well as the tools used in its development. The transmitter can be used as a standalone unit in a single FPGA, or as an element of a complete communication system for on-chip emulation.

In this paper we propose a cross-layer optimized framework which jointly considers the video coding and transmission in wireless mesh networks. In our framework, video coding parameters, network path selection, MAC layer frame size, and modulation and coding schemes at PHY layer are systematically optimized across the entire network protocol stack. To achieve the goal of real-time video communication with high-quality and/or stringent delay requirements, the proposed framework is formulated into a minimum distortion and/or minimum delay problem. The formulated problem is efficiently solved as a Lagrange dual problem, and the solution is tested by H.264/AVC. The system performance in terms of the perceived video quality is compared between the cross-layer optimized system and the current system. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed optimization framework.

Service differentiation in WLAN has been traditionally faced at the MAC layer. However, some PHY layer parameters, such as the transmission power, the antenna, and the modulation/coding scheme, have a deep impact on network performance. Since the criterion for selecting these parameters is left to the vendor specific implementations, the performance spread of most experimental results about 802.11 WLAN could be affected by vendor proprietary schemes. The focus of this paper is an experimental analysis of the undisclosed antenna diversity mechanisms employed by some widely used cards (namely, the Atheros and Intel based cards), and a thorough understanding of the optimization goals which guided their design. Although these mechanisms have been introduced for improving the transmission robustness to fading, we proved that they may have dramatic side- effects on link performance, whenever the available antennas are not homogeneous.

In this paper, we show how cognitive radio can help minimize energy consumption of a wireless mobile communication device. We propose an energy optimization framework using cognitive radio for a given quality of service requirement based on the channel and the radio capabilities. The cognitive radio not only adjusts modulation, coding, and radiated power, as with conventional adaptive modulation, but also adjusts component characteristics (e.g., power amplifier characteristics) so that the radio operates with the highest energy efficient possible way. Simulation results show that significant energy savings (up to 75%) can be achieved compared to conventional adaptive modulation. This framework also can be applied to optimize radio operations to achieve additional goals.
