In this paper we consider channel coding for dual data streams with unequal error protection (UEP) for the objectives of low complexity receiver structures and prioritized handling of data in MIMO broadcast systems. We focus on high spectral efficiency bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) MIMO OFDM system where two independently coded spatial streams of symbols are simultaneously transmitted by an antenna array using antenna cycling. In some sense, the receiver then views a multiple access channel (MAC) and consequently the reception is based on successive interference cancellation (SIC). The limited adaptability of the proposed system helps gear up to a higher data rate as channel conditions improve without any adjustment at the transmitter. This leads to devising a broadcast strategy incorporating different levels of service. Standard receiver solutions for such schemes employ sub-optimal linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) successive stripping decoders. We propose a novel low complexity near optimal demodulator based on match filter outputs for a dual stream system which exhibits better performance and lower complexity as that of MMSE based demodulator.

In this paper, our focus is on energy efficient coding schemes for wireless sensor networks. A source coding and modulation technique for reducing multiple access interference (MAI) as well as for reducing power consumption in MC-CDMA wireless sensor network systems is presented. In all our analysis we consider perfect power control mechanism. Source symbols are represented by a special coding, termed Minimum Energy coding (ME coding), which exploits redundant bits for saving power when transmitted via RF links with On-Off-Keying. This ME coding is applied to MC-CDMA sensor network systems in order to reduce MAI as well as to reduce power consumption. The proposed method is aptly suitable for wireless sensor video node in application of video coding.

The presented 60 GHz experimental system has achieved data rates of 192 Mbps both in LOS and NLOS scenarios, showing that with appropriate RF front-end design and transmission techniques, the potential of 60 GHz transmission can be exploited for future high data rate indoor communication. This paper presents research results in space-surface multistatic synthetic aperture radar (SS-MSAR) with non cooperative GPS satellites. The goal of this paper is to characterize such a system in an ISAR context, with a moving ground *** spread function (PSF) are defined and used in this work to estimate the performance in term of resolution. These criteria are computed, and compared, for several scenarios with targets of different velocities.

In time division duplex (TDD) system, channel information extracted from the uplink signal can be used for channel pre-equalization of the downlink signal as well as for selecting the appropriate modulation and coding scheme (MCS) set. In asymmetric TDD systems which have more than one consecutive downlink slots, if pre-equalization is applied in the downlink, the signals to be transmitted in all downlink slots have to be pre-equalized with the same channel weights computed from the nearest uplink signal. This results in channel-mismatch in subsequent downlink slots and the transmission performance is severely degraded. Since the optimum signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) thresholds to switch the MCS set are different in each slot due to the channel-mismatch, use of the same SNR thresholds in all downlink slots may severely degrade the system performance. Based on this observation, this paper investigates the impact of channel mismatch on adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in asymmetric TDD systems with pre-equalization in the downlink. Moreover, application of correlation dependent slot-wise thresholds and CRC based adaptive threshold control scheme are considered to alleviate the effect of channel mismatch and compensate channel state information (CSI) estimation error.

The major difference between a non-cellular system, i.e. a single isolated cell, and a cellular system is the intercell interference (ICI). In the uplink, the base station can measure the users' signal to noise and interference ratio (SINR) and through a feedforward channel it can inform the users which coding and modulation scheme to apply in order to perform link adaptation (LA). However, a user's SINR observed in the uplink by the base station when determining the link adaptation decision might no longer be the same when the link adaptation is effected by the user due to fluctuations of the intercell interference. By then, the intercell interference could have greatly changed even if the users are static, due to changes in the scheduling decisions in the interfering cells. Hence, the uplink transmission would no longer have the correct link adaptation for the current SINR, since we are to some extent blind with respect to the ICI. In this work, we quantify this degree of ICI blindness by the correlation between the measured ICI and the actual experienced ICI. Furthermore, we analyze the degradation in throughput for different degrees of ICI correlation which depends on the scheduling in the interfering cells. Additionally, we show how much benefit correct link adaptation provides in a cellular environment over outdated link adaptation. In this work, we assume that there is no intracell interference as a consequence of an orthogonal multiple access scheme.

In this paper, we derive the asymptotic bit error rate (BER) for multiple-input multiple-output bit-interleaved coded modulation (MIMO-BICM) with linear zero-forcing (ZF) receivers for a temporally correlated flat Rayleigh fading channel. Pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) in combination with linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) channel estimation is considered. We also demonstrate that the deterioration due to imperfect channel state information (CSI) can be represented by a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation.

Packet loss affects the received speech quality greatly in VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) applications. PCM (pulse code modulation) coders are often used for VoIP and also face such problems. In this paper, a packet loss recovery algorithm is proposed based on CSI (coding with side information) and rate-distortion optimization. Two virtual reconstruction methods are implemented for every voiced packet with side information at the sender endpoint. Rate-distortion optimization is used to select the proper recovery method which has the lowest cost considering both the distortion and rate. At the receiver endpoint, the lost packets will be recovered with the selected recovery method. Simulation results show that the speech quality over IP network is improved dramatically at the price of only a low bandwidth consumption with the proposed method.

User demand, standards and products for digital nomadic communications are evolving quickly. The combination of this changing environment together with the need for short time-to-market pushes for more flexible implementations. Software Defined Radios (SDR) have been introduced as the ultimate way to achieve such flexibility. The reduced energy budget required by battery-powered solutions makes the typical worst-case static dimensioning unaffordable under highly dynamic operating conditions. Instead, more energy-scalable algorithms and implementations are entailed to provide flexibility while maintaining the required energy efficiency. Particularly, energy-scalable implementations can exploit data format properties to offer different tradeoffs between accuracy and energy. In this paper, such a technique is developed and applied to the SDR implementation of a 2 antennas 200 Mbps+ OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) inner modem receiver on a C-programmable CGA (Coarse Grain Array) processor with extensive SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) support. By defining separate implementations for different combinations of modulation scheme and coding rate, up to 3-fold gains can be achieved in the average energy consumption.
