We address the application of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) for third-generation (3G) wireless systems. We propose a new method for selecting the appropriate modulation and coding scheme (MCS) according to the estimated channel condition. We take a statistical decision making approach to maximize the average throughput while maintaining an acceptable frame error rate (FER). We use a first-order finite-state Markov model to represent the average channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in subsequent frames. The MCS is selected in each state of this Markov model (among the choices proposed in the 3G standards) to maximize the statistical average of the throughput in that state. Using this decision-making approach, we also propose a simplified Markov model with fewer parameters, which is suitable in systems where changes in the fading characteristics need to be accounted for in an adaptive fashion. Numerical results are presented showing that both of our models substantially outperform the conventional techniques that use "threshold-based" decision making.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently established the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) K-band Upgrade Project (TKUP), a project intended to enhance the TDRSS Ku-band and Ka-band Single Access Return 225 MHz (Ku/KaSAR-225) data service by adding the capability to process bandwidth efficient signal design and to replace the White Sand Complex (WSC) KSAR high data rate ground equipment and high rate switches which are nearing obsolescence. As a precursor to this project, a modulation and coding study was performed to identify signal structures which maximized the data rate through the Ku/KaSAR-225 channel, minimized the required customer EIRP and ensured acceptable hardware complexity on the customer platform. Discusses reliable data transmission from a low-orbit satellite to a geostationary satellite or ground station. In such scenarios, the received signal power increases as the transmitting low-orbit satellite comes into view, and then decreases as it then departs, resulting in a short-duration, time-varying communication link. The goal is to choose a modulation and coding scheme which maximizes the link throughput (in bits per contact) while satisfying a prescribed probability of error requirement. The authors assume M-ary PSK and a constant channel signaling rate R/sub s/, and determine optimal values for M and R/sub s/ using information-theoretic arguments. They then examine the throughput of both fixed rate and variable rate concatenated coding schemes for the channel that results from these optimal values.

One of the advantages of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is the multiplexing gain over single-input single-output (SISO) systems. We consider adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) as a practical technique in achieving the full multiplexing gain of MIMO systems. The multiplexing gain of AMC MIMO systems is analyzed quantitatively, and a practical way of predicting the multiplexing gain of a generic AMC MIMO system is presented.

An adaptive coding and modulation transmission scheme applicable for third-generation mobile satellite systems is proposed. The transmitter dynamically selects the optimum coding and modulation scheme according to the environment in order to maximize the spectrum and power efficiency. A constant average bit error rate (BER) is maintained without changing (or with a very small change to) the transmitted power, and hence the scheme eases the power control requirements. In addition, a higher throughput can be achieved compared to fixed (non-adaptive) systems. Unlike other adaptive transmission systems, in our work the adaptation is based on the Rice factor. The paper also discusses a Rice factor estimation algorithm.

In this paper we introduce a novel cross layer design between MAC and physical layers. Our novel design is based on controlling the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) transmission mode at the physical layer according to the queue length of finite buffer at the data link layer and each transmission mode of AMC. The aim is optimizing system performance over a wireless link, preserving the important quality of service (QoS) parameter, packet average delay time. Analytical expressions such as packet drop probability, channel packet error rate, packet loss rate and packet average delay time are derived both analytically and through simulations according to the system and channel parameters. Using these expressions, a constrained optimization problem is solved numerically to maximize the overall system throughput, preserving packet average delay time.

Because of low-cost optical devices and virtually unlimited bandwidth, optical wireless communications (OWC) for indoor wireless local area networks (WLANs) has become an attractive alternative to radio frequency systems. Since optical signals cannot penetrate through walls or other opaque barriers, the security of infrared WLANs is very high and there is no interference between rooms. This makes cell planning easier, and the potential capacity of an optical-based network in a building is extremely high. However, an optical link is susceptible to path loss and multipath dispersion. In addition, the average transmit power is constrained by eye-safety regulations and power consumption concerns. modulation, equalization and error-control coding techniques are considered to overcome these drawbacks, especially the effects of multipath dispersion. Pulse-position modulation (PPM) has been employed for IrDA and IEEE802.11 standards because it offers high power efficiency. We introduce a combination of pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) and differential pulse-position modulation (DPPM), named differential amplitude pulse-position modulation (DAPPM), in order to gain a better compromise between power and bandwidth efficiency. Since these modulation schemes over an ISI channel can be represented by a trellis diagram, their channel capacity is determined using a method for calculating the capacity of a Markov process channel. Although maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) is the optimal soft decision decoder (SDD) for DPPM systems, its complexity is extremely high. We examine SDDs which are less complex than MLSD, but have performance close to that with MLSD.

The combination of coding and low index modulation can result in both bandwidth and power efficient modem design. The low index modulation format is obtained by using a frequency division and multiplication network to alter the modulation index of ½ for convertioned MSK to a lower value. This lower value modulation index in concert with restricted range encoding provides a system that can achieve a 2 bits/sec/Hz bandwidth efficiency at a power level equivalent to that required for MSK. The design concepts are such that data rates in the hundreds of megabits/second are practical.

There have been great efforts to study the adaptive MIMO systems, while all of them concentrate on the systems without channel coding. This paper presents a new adaptive V-BLAST scheme adopting turbo-codes as the channel coding. This new scheme divides the optimization problem into two steps which simplifies the design greatly. Also, through this two-step method, we derive two algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate applications respectively. We combine the bit and power allocation with antenna selection effectively with very low complexity through a new ordering scheme and derive a simplified power allocation algorithm. For adaptive coding, we propose a new metric - Equivalent Capacity SNR, which can indicate the overall channel condition, to select the proper coding scheme. Simulation results show that the algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate both provide very good throughput performance with low complexity and less feedback information.

In this paper, we investigate a communication strategy combining of transmit antenna selection with adaptive modulation and coding for space-time block coded system. The antenna selection is based on the criterion of maximizing the average spectral efficiency (ASE) of the whole system for a given bit error rate (BER) constraint. In order to enhance system performance, low density parity check codes (LDPC) is employed as the error correcting codes. We assume that the channel state information (CSI) is known at the receiver and the adaptive control signaling can be perfectly fed back to the transmitter. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides a well behaved trade-off between the ASE and BER under MIMO environment.
