We consider packet-by-packet rate adaptation to maximize the throughput over a finite-state Markov channel. To limit the amount of feedback data, we use past packet acknowledgements (ACKs) and past rates as channel state information. It is known that the maximum achievable throughput is computationally prohibitive to determine. Thus, in this paper we derive two upper bounds on the maximum achievable throughput, which are tighter than previously known ones. We compare the upper bounds with a known myopic rate-adaptation policy. Numerical studies over a wide range of SNR suggest that the myopic rate-adaptation policy is close to the upper bounds and may be adequate in slowly time-varying channels.

In this paper, we consider the problem of space-time (ST) coding with unipolar pulse position modulations (PPM). The proposed code satisfies a large number of construction constraints that render it superior to the existing PPM encoding schemes. In particular, the proposed 2 times 2 code achieves a full transmit diversity order while transmitting at a rate of 1 PPM-symbol per channel use. The proposed scheme can be associated with M-ary PPM constellations for all even values of M without introducing any constellation extension. This renders the proposed scheme suitable for low cost carrier-less ultra-wideband (UWB) systems where information must be conveyed only by the time delays of the modulated sub-nanosecond pulses without introducing any amplitude amplification or phase rotation. Finally, the proposed scheme is symbol-by-symbol decodable where the information can be reconstituted by performing simple linear operations at the receiver side. A possible extension to transmitters equipped with three antennas is also discussed in situations where a certain number of feedback bits is available.

In this paper, we propose a joint source-channel unequal error protection scheme for scalable video streaming over capacity constrained high speed packet access (HSPA) networks. Conventional link adaptation schemes in HSPA networks use the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that achieves a preset channel frame error rate. Our scheme utilizes video priority information along with channel quality information to set the channel coding rate that maximizes the cumulative coding rate of channel coding and application layer unequal error protection. Performance evaluations show that that under the same constraints our scheme results in an average performance improvement of 0.5dB in video PSNR for different channel conditions and different video sequences.

This paper presents different schemes of state space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) for three-leg voltage source inverter. The analysis is performed with respect to switching losses and total harmonic distortion. Matlab /simulink programs are derived to illustrate the switching pattern for different schemes of space vector modulation (SVM). They are used afterwards to calculate harmonic values and total harmonic distortion (THD).Besides, the pulse modulation indices (reference signal / carrier signal) for different schemes are set as basis of comparison. The simulation programs are then applied on different types of loads and results are presented.

WiBro is defined as a subset of the IEEE 802.16 standard and is developed based on the mobile WiMAX. WiBro delivers wireless data with a high transfer rate to provide mobile broadband services. However, it is necessary to consider radio resources efficiency due to limited resources. In this paper, we propose frequency assignment (FA) load balancing algorithm in order to use resources efficiently, by controlling two types of handover procedure and scheduling. When the resource unbalancing is detected in a FA, we choose BS (base station) initiated handover or MS (mobile station) initiated handover adaptively to disperse users entering and guarantee QoS (quality of service) in real time services. The difference between call admission control (CAC) and FA load balancing scheme is that FA load balancing scheme makes the MS connect with other FAs without disconnection. The proposed algorithm shows the performance improvement which is a lot for the existing algorithm in the user acceptance and QoS in real time service.

A novel decoder for Complementary Code Keying (CCK) modulation is proposed in this work. Compared to the parallel decoder architecture based on Fast Walsh Transform (FWT), the presented pipelined architecture has better hardware sharing and utilization efficiency, as well as smaller area. Its hardware area for finding the maximum decoding output value is minimized by employing a low-complexity on-the-fly comparator that takes advantage of the sequentially incoming chips and the pipelined data flow. Also, the proposed design consumes only 50.6 ¿w at 11MHz based on UMC 0.18-¿m process, which is much lower than the conventional FWT-based architecture. Thus it is a low-power and low-area solution for the design of a high-performance 802.11b system.

We present an adaptive transmission scheme for the CR (cognitive radio) systems. The proposed scheme estimates the distance between a CR user and an incumbent user utilizing IT (interference temperature) information recognized through the spectrum sensing procedure. Then, the CR user determines the maximum transmission power which does not cause any interference to the incumbent user by using CR-APC (CR-adaptive power control). At the same time, in order to provide the maximum throughput to the CR user, the proposed scheme adaptively selects the modulation order considering the determined transmission power and the IT value by applying CR-AMC (CR-adaptive modulation and coding) in the given channel state. Hence, wireless communication equipments using the proposed scheme are able to adaptively transmit the data without interference on the incumbent users in various channel environments.

Symbol mapping is very crucial for the performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID). In this paper, a new scheme of symbol mapping called Cross-8PSK-Quasi-Gray is proposed. The optimization scheme of Cross-8PSK is composed of two QPSK with different radius and phases. Through analysis and comparisons with three previously mentioned symbol mappings in terms of channel capacity and error performance, simulation results show that Cross-8PSK-Quasi-Gray mapping significantly outperforms set partitioning, semi set partitioning labeling maps in the aspects of both channel capacity and error performance. The overall performance of Cross-8PSK-Quasi-Gray mapping is nearly close to gray mapping in conventional 8PSK. Thus, Cross-8PSK-Quasi-Gray mapping is a good scheme for designing the power-efficient BICM.

We investigate on the design of modulation schemes suited for two-way wireless relaying systems that apply network coding at the physical layer. We consider network coding based on denoise-and-forward (DNF), which consists of two stages: multiple access (MA) stage and broadcast (BC) stage. For the case of QPSK constellation in the MA stage, we introduce the modulation-related problems in DNF. We propose two approaches to solve those issues. One uses only QPSK constellations at the BC stage. The other allows the use of unconventional 5-ary modulations, optimized according to the channel condition. The performance evaluation shows that a significant improvement in end-to-end throughput can be achieved, in particular for Nakagami-Rice fading channels.

Use of unequal modulation schemes in a system utilizing space time block coding is investigated. Employing mixed modulations in a space-time system offers finer granularity in the system performance without the receiver complexity increase associated with a larger set of modulation formats. It is shown that for the optimum performance of the system, the power per stream should be adjusted accordingly. Another consideration is that the stream using the lower modulation order has a higher robustness, so it is possible to reduce the complexity of detection process by using maximum-likelihood detection only on the stream with the higher modulation order.
