In this paper we consider the problem of allocating resources to users in the downlink of a 802.16 network. This network uses orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) as the downlink transmission technology. The transmission resources available in the downlink include bandwidth (subcarriers), time (OFDMA symbols) and transmission power all of which are limited. The frequency-time resource allocations for each user must satisfy certain constraints (e.g., must form logical rectangular bursts). The focus of this paper is on the determination of the size and locations of these bursts within the frame for the given scheduler decisions. Prior work has addressed this problem independently of other protocol layers. In our approach we simplify the burst construction problem, without significant performance degradation, by taking into account higher layer information such as the tolerable delay of the underlying application.

An accurate and simple link quality model is of utmost importance in link adaptation (LA) design. Our previous work in has verified the good accuracy of the mutual information (MI) model for rate compatible (RC) LDPC coded OFDM system. In this paper, the MI model is used to predict the retransmission length T of two hybrid ARQ schemes, partial chase combining (PCC) and incremental redundancy (IR). Simulation results verified that the one time retransmission satisfied a certain target BELR with predicted T, i.e. the needed minimum retransmission length. Thus the MI model can serve as an accurate prediction model for high spectrum efficiency hybrid ARQ design of LDPC coded OFDM system.

High-rate analog-to-digital converters (ADC's) are ubiquitous and critical components in advance signal processing, such as software radio and ultra wideband (UWB) radar system. In this paper, we propose an alternative parallel sampling scheme, which is based on random projection, for an ultra- wideband analog to digital conversion. The sampling rate by using proposed scheme can be reduced to 1/m Nyquist sampling rate where m is the number of parallel channel. Compared with conventional ADCs based on pulse code modulation (PCM), the proposed method makes the sub-Nyquist sampling possible. And compared with other parallel sampling scheme methods, it can be easy implemented without any apriori knowledge about the signal. And it is very suitable for sampling UWB signals with short time support. Additionally, the detail implementation structure, performance analysis and simulation results of proposed method are given.

This paper studies the detection and decoding of LDPC encoded, interleaved, BDPSK-modulated symbols on the correlated flat Rayleigh fading channel using two-symbol-interval observations. The log-likelihood metric is derived for sum-product decoders. For each hypothesized code bit, the metric depends on two consecutive received signals and only on two other variables: the received SNR per bit and the fade rate. We simulate the performance of the system with this metric, and compare it with that of other metrics that do not take into account the fade rate. Numerical results are given for different codes. In practice, the fade rate may not be precisely known at the receiver, so we also examine how the system performance is affected if the actual fade rate differs from the assumed fade rate.

Circular trellis code modulators (CTCM) are low latency, short block codes. These codes were originally designed for spread spectrum communication systems operating in an anti- jam environment. For these applications, low-rate, non-systematic parallel concatenated encoders along with iterative turbo decoders were used to achieve Near Shannon limit performance. For applications that require high data rates, CTCM can be modified to get a high-rate encoder. For this high-rate encoder, the symbol assignment method used by the low-rate code cannot be directly applied. In this paper, we present symbol assignment for rate-1/2 and rate-1/3 CTCM and show that their performance is comparable to other codes available in literature.

The joint IP modem (JIPM) includes a forward (DVB-S2) and a return (DVB-RCS) link capability with a plethora of modulations and error correcting codes. In addition there is variable modulation and coding (VCM), adaptive modulation and coding (ACM) as well as uplink power control capability. The wideband global SATCOM (WGS) satellite has both Ka-band and X-band capability utilizing 39 active channels of up to 125 MHz bandwidth each. This paper addresses the JIPM hub/spoke topology at Ka-band and determines the constraints and requirements on the user VSAT terminals to support global broadcast service (GBS) traffic. Two GBS upgraded terminal capabilities will be considered: GBS receive-only using the JIPM DVB-S2 receive-only capability and two-way service using the JIPM with a GBS terminal capable of supporting two-way transmission on WGS. Achievable data rates using the upgraded GBS terminal will be presented. The forward link data rates are improved by the use of DVB-S2 over the current DVB-S waveform. The terminal capabilities at Ka-band are determined by a number of return link considerations: the throughput in the return direction, propagation conditions at the terminal, the actual WGS beam being used and number of 125 MHz channels being used in that beam, the sharing of the beam with other users, location of the terminal within the beam, the pointing/tracking error for the GBS terminal. This paper considers the next generation receive terminal (NGRT) as the targeted GBS terminal for upgrade for both 2-way operation and the JIPM addition.

Joint Source and Channel coding (JSCC) scheme using ring convolutional coded Continuous Phase modulation (CPM) is investigated. The channels under this investigation are the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel and the Rayleigh fading Channel. Optimal soft decoding for the proposed JSCC scheme is studied. The soft decoder is based on the A Posteriori Probability (APP) algorithm for trellis coded CPM with ring convolutional codes. The novelties of this work are the development of a JSCC scheme using ring convolutional coded CPM, the use of a soft decoder and the APP algorithm for the combined systems.

This paper presents a blockwise convolutional codes bit-interleaved coded modulation (BC-BICM) scheme for block-fading channels. First, the maximum diversity order is achieved by employing a blockwise maximum distance separable (MDS) convolutional code. Second, the coding gain can be improved by either choosing a better signal labeling scheme for the BICM with iterative decoding or by using better convolutional codes. Simulation results are provided to verify the results.

This paper provides a link and system level study of the downlink in a B3G system using MIMO OFDMA techniques. A 3GPP/LTE-like scenario, in terms of frame structure and system main parameters, is considered in this study. At the link level, the double Alamouti MIMO scheme is studied and the performances of various modulation and coding schemes (MCS) are provided. The impact of real MIMO channel estimation (including RF impairments, CFO compensation and automatic gain control AGC) on the MCSs link performance is also presented. System level study is thus carried out to assess the performance of the downlink OFDMA in terms of coverage and cell throughput. Several scheduling disciplines and MIMO schemes are investigated and the impact of the spatial diversity on the cell throughput is provided. This study has been carried out in the scope of the French RNRT OPUS project.

The IEEE 802.16 system called WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) provides quality of service (QoS) of several types for different service. The WiMAX is expected to support QoS for real time application, such as Voice over IP (VoIP). In this paper, when network congestion occurs, the VoIP bit-rate needs to be adapted to achieve the best speech quality. We propose a new scheme called Adaptive VoIP Level coding (AVLC). VoIP is sensitive to delay and loss. According to different network conditions such as varied modulation, packet delay, packet loss, and residual time slot, we use G.722.2 codec to adapt each connectionpsilas data rate. Simulation experiments are conducted to test the performance (network delay, packet loss, and R-score) of the proposed mechanisms. In result, we increase the R-score about 40% to 50%.
