Game theory is a broadly accepted tool for resource optimization in cognitive radio networks. By modeling a resource management problem as a game, some aspects of a real-world implementation have to be relaxed. For instance, the number of players in a game is conventionally assumed constant but in real networks it changes over time. Furthermore, the available computing power of wireless sensor nodes is limited because of energy and simple hardware constraints. Hence, games require utility functions with low complexity. In this paper, some aspects of evolutionary game theory are borrowed to address these issues. Our approach results in a simple algorithm, which avoids theoretical modeling aspects not hold in real world applications.

Wireless communication plays an important role in today's environment. To have an effective communication there must be interaction between different layers of OSI model. In this paper we propose a cross layer design for combining queuing and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) which includes a new modulation technique Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK). Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation is widely used in cellular and PCS applications. One of the important considerations in the use of modulation is the average power spectral density and especially the spectral density characteristics on the tails. Already proposed AMC module for cross-layer design has included the modulations like BPSK, QPSK, QAM etc. In order to maximize spectral efficiency under prescribed delay and performance constraints, GMSK is proposed in this paper.

We consider the minimization of long-term average power consumption for data transmission from a mobile station to the base station, with the joint packet loss at both physical and MAC layers being constrained below the given value. The problem is formulated as an infinite horizon constrained Markov decision problem and solved by linear programming method. Simulations firmly verify the correctness of the proposed solution. Besides, we comment on the determination of power level applied to each adaptive transmission mode, and show that enlarging the range of performance levels offered by different transmission modes can further improve the optimal solution.

In communication links employing incremental redundancy (IR), the strength of the code used for forward error correction is adapted in order to maximize instantaneous spectral efficiency in time-varying channels. In this paper, a simple two-phase IR transmission scheme is studied in a block-fading channel in order to illuminate the effects on protocol design and achievable spectral efficiency of the performance, rate range, and rate granularity of the chosen rate-compatible (RC) code family. Two pragmatic RC families based on Flexible Low-Density Parity-Check (F-LDPC) codes are studied alongside a notional family with infinite rate precision that matches theoretical guidelines for the performance of practical coding schemes (i.e., limits on finite block size and non-vanishing block error rate transmission over modulation constrained channels) at all points.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular technique used to combat frequency selective fading in multipath channels. When spectral nulls are present in the channel, they can severely degrade or cancel out OFDM tones, resulting in an irreducible error rate. To combat this, standards typically employ forward error correction (FEC) techniques. Code-Spread OFDM (CS-OFDM) combines the characteristics of OFDM and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to create a more robust modulation scheme which provides substantial performance improvements relative to standard OFDM. In CS-OFDM, each sinewave carries a weighted sum of all the information symbols being transmitted in an OFDM block interval. In this paper, the MMSE estimator is derived for each symbol for a number of cases, including when the number of carriers is greater than the number of symbols. The performance of both OFDM and CS-OFDM are evaluated with and without error control coding using the FEC techniques typically employed in OFDM standards.

Recently, the capacity of an attenuated quantum channel which is a model of a long distance optical fiber channel was derived. This capacity is in principle achieved by a continuous modulation and a random coding. However, a continuous modulation and a random coding are not practical. Therefore, we need discussion about capacity used for more practical modulation and coding. In this paper, we show characteristics of both information and error probability criteria for an attenuated channel using M-ary PSK modulation and pseudo-cyclic codes.

IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs support multiple data transmission rates at physical (PHY) layer. Various rate adaptation schemes that select optimal transmission rate according to the receivers' channel condition have been proposed. Among these protocols, Automatic Rate Fallback (ARF) is the one that is widely implemented in commercial devices due to its simplicity. However, it is well-known that the performance of ARF deteriorates when the wireless channel condition is unstable or many frame collisions occur. On the other hand, RBAR (Receiver Based Auto-Rate) that achieves the good performance is rarely used because it introduces extra control overhead. In this paper, we propose a novel rate adaptation scheme that performs well without control overhead. The key idea of our proposed scheme is that if a station successfully overhears a downlink transmission whose data rate is higher than its current rate, then it requests the AP to increase the data rate to overheard frame's transmission rate. We compare our scheme with previous rate adaptation schemes in terms of throughput performance via the simulation study. The performance results indicate that our scheme achieves better performance than RBAR.

Wireless access networks such as IEEE 802.16 employ a multi-rate physical layer. Such physical layer designs rely on a user-defined link adaptation mechanism that changes the coding and modulation schemes, thus the transmission rate, in order to maintain link reliability at a desired level under different channel conditions. The multirate operation has a significant effect on the fairness of the services provided in the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. In this paper, we present methods and algorithms for fair scheduling in such multirate wireless networks. We define fairness in terms of temporal or throughput fair services, and present different methods for fair service provisioning. For this purpose, we first discuss the concepts behind fair scheduling in variable bitrate networks, and then examine a few specific algorithms. We analyze the performance of these algorithms using simulation experiments.

Different error protection capabilities associated with different bit positions in a constellation are utilized to provide unequal error protection (UEP) with multilevel coding (MLC) on AWGN and fast/slow fading channels. Unlike previous work on this problem, the design tool in this paper is the symmetric information rate (SIR), which is well suited to the use of modern component codes. The constellation design problem is addressed from two perspectives: bits-to-symbol mapping, and positions of constellation points. Design guidelines of MLC for UEP are presented, and examples are shown to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. It is further shown that the proposed design is especially desirable for communication over a slow-fading wireless channel, as it allows for a gradual performance degradation with the decreasing receive SNR. Throughput advantages are shown to support this claim.
