Mode selection problem in MIMO-OFDM system is addressed. A general formulation is introduced to decompose the problem into two decoupled sub-problems: modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection, and space-time processing (STP) optimization, each of which can be tackled more systematically. Mode selection algorithms can then be developed using a channel quality indicator (CQI) metric. The methodology is illustrated using the platform of IEEE 802.11n. The qualities of multiple CQI metrics are compared in terms of "coherency" and their performances are evaluated in terms of system goodput. This has been shown that the metric we proposed outperforms the other metrics.

This paper provides a detailed performance comparison between both upcoming OFDM based mobile technologies for broadband radio access -3GPP UTRA LTE and mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e). Based on link level simulation results, key performance indicators like physical layer throughput have been evaluated for different channel conditions and different modulation and coding schemes (MCS). Besides SISO, both MIMO 2 times 2 diversity and MIMO 2 times 2 spatial multiplexing scenarios have been investigated showing very promising results for the downlink direction. A thorough analysis has been presented highlighting the differences of both competing technologies and their impacts on spectral efficiency and radio performance. For this, in a first assessment, system parameters have been aligned towards equal peak throughput per MCS to show the technology specific behavior under different SNIR conditions. In a second assessment, full 3GPP and IEEE standard compliant system configurations have been ranked including for example typical layer one overhead. It has been shown that WiMAX as well as LTE prove to be state of the art technologies, with excellent performance but with certain advantages and disadvantages on both sides. The overall radio performance, however, is rather equal, thus clear-cut performance statements have to be based on higher layer design and even on network level.

WiMAX system is based on OFDMA, and it is very suitable for VoIP traffic. At the same time, frame bundling is an technique to improve the performance of VoIP, and so it is applied to WiMAX system in this paper. The simulation results indicate that when the system is inadequate of bandwidth, this technique indeed reduces the PER and delay jitter of the VoIP users, and enhances the spectrum efficiency.

Watermarking is a potential method for copyright protection and multimedia data authentication in the internet. The watermarking process can be considered as a communication task. In this paper, a novel watermarking scheme using code division multiple access (CDMA) modulation is proposed to achieve a superior performance in terms of robustness and imperceptibility. In the proposed scheme, every three watermark bits are modulated into a five bit MCDMA code. Then the MCDMA code is concealed in the coefficients of a DCT *** demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme, simulations under various conditions are conducted. The empirical results show that our proposed scheme can stand up against most common attacks including JPEG compression, rotating, resizing, cropping, mosaicking, noising and blurring etc.

Superposition coding can be used to improve capacity of communications in a variety of scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel location-based data transmission strategy using superposition coding for forward link (FL) of TDMA system with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). By taking advantage of the total received signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) disparities on the forward link, the system can transmit to multiple users at the same time and frequency by using superposition coding. The proposed scheme divides the users in a cell into two sets based on their locations. In each time slot, the base station transmits to the selected pair of users belonging to these two sets, respectively, with superposition coding. The average sector throughput of TDMA system with our scheme is mathematically analyzed for a multi-cell scenario. From numerical examples, it is shown that our proposed scheme significantly increases the average throughput of the system.

In this paper we present an analysis of the Bit Error Rate (BER) of LDPC-coded-QAM systems in an Additive-White-Gaussian-Noise (AWGN) channel impaired by a residual Phase-Noise (PN) process and a Nonlinear (NL) distortion. We start by deriving expressions for the Mean-Square-Error (MSE) caused by these common impairments. The BER is calculated separately for the coded bits and the uncoded bits, in a coded modulation scheme. In the first case, the MSE is added to the channel noise variance. As a consequence, the BER curve, which is assumed to be known, is shifted and an error floor is generated. The BER of the uncoded bits is calculated directly from the phase noise variance, the channel SNR and the nonlinear distortion which affects the distance between constellation points. Simulation results using an LDPC code validate the derivations.

This paper addresses low frequency range power line communications (PLC), where the transmitters are output voltage and bandwidth limited. We investigate the block decoding of coded non-coherent 2-FSK modulation for the transmission over the impulsive noise channel with narrow band interference. The maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver is analyzed and suboptimum decoding algorithms improving the bit error rate performance are derived. Furthermore, an efficient transmission method of combining Reed Solomon (RS) coding with run length limited (RLL) codes is incorporated to obtain coding gain without expanding the bandwidth. Simulation results show the improved performance of the proposed RS-RLL scheme. Our coding/modulation scheme is in agreement with the existing CENELEC standard.

This paper discusses the construction and implementation problem of trellis coded quantization (TCQ) based data hiding. We explore the robustness and distortion of data hiding by analyzing its duality with distributed source coding. Based on our analysis a new implementation of the powerful trellis coded modulation (TCM) and TCQ data hiding scheme is presented. It simplifies the construction process with only one trellis and achieves a good tradeoff between robustness and distortion by embedding the information in the middle input of TCQ. Simulation is conducted for Gaussian, Laplacian and real image sources under additive Gaussian noise attack. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the new implementation.

The usage of networkspsila speech channels for secure communications or data transmission could be interesting in the case of lack of data channels. In this paper, a scheme for secure communications over voice-dedicated channels of mobile networks, using digital modulations, is proposed. When transmitted over speech channels, the secure communication signal transmission could be subjected to a high damage, especially in mobile networks, due to the presence of speech coders. The technical reasons behind the signalpsilas degradation are discussed. The performances of the transmission of digital modulated signals through speech coders are presented for QAM and OFDM modulations, after optimization of their parameters. The voice activity detector sharpens the signal degradation. Its role is detailed in this paper, and a method to eliminate its negative effect is introduced. Simulation results, in terms of binary error rate, will give prominence to the possibility of establishing a communication at a bit rate high enough to transmit voice, coded at low bit rates and ciphered. The type of the low bit rate coder that could be used is studied, considering the coding bit rate, and the influence of the binary error rate on the quality of the coded speech.

We propose an incremental frequency reuse (IFR) scheme that reuses effectively the radio spectrum through systematic segment allocation over a cluster of adjoining cells. It divides the entire frequency spectrum into several spectrum segments. Based on the above segmentation, a set of cell- specific segment allocation sequences is designed for universal frequency reuse. Here, each sequence defines its own base segment and allocation order. The designed sequences are then assigned to respective cells over the cell cluster. In this scheme, the base segments over the cell cluster are mutually non-overlapped and collectively exhausted, and the added segments are interfered with from surrounding cells, but only in an incremental and coordinated manner. Hence, the proposed scheme can provide better reuse efficiency over the conventional ones such as the classical universal frequency reuse scheme and the soft frequency reuse (SFR) scheme. In addition, the simple and flexible IFR scheme can be easily configured as most existing reuse schemes only by redefining the set of segment allocation sequences. A system-level simulator for an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular system covering surrounding cells up to 3 rd -tier has been implemented. Simulation results show that the IFR scheme provides quite better reuse efficiency as compared to the classical universal reuse scheme and the SFR scheme, especially at the cell-edge region.
