This paper investigates the performance of Beyond 3G system following the requirements defined in WINNER (phase I and II) Project and concentrates on two major topics. The first one is a novel frequency domain mutual-information based adaptive coding and modulation (MI-ACM), the second one is the impact of traffic modeling and scheduling on delay and spectral efficiency of such systems. Different MIMO schemes, including Alamouti and PARC utilizing Grid of Beams and SDMA, are examined on the system-level in terms of spectral efficiency and packet delays.

The demands for high data rates and spectrally efficient modulation techniques are increasing due to the evolution of multimedia service in wireless communication systems. Bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) is a bandwidth efficient transmission scheme, which is suitable for next-generation wireless communication systems. In order to exploit the time-varying nature of the channel, an adaptive iterative receiver for BICM-ID is proposed in this paper, which is adaptable in terms of selecting the iterative decoding algorithms according to the channel state information estimates available at the receiver. Simulation results show that the adaptive iterative receiver provides good performance with a lower decoding complexity both in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.

In this paper we provide a tutorial-style overview of linear detection in iterative joint multiuser decoding. We show that a generic linear iterative joint multiuser decoder naturally replaces the canonical iterative joint multiuser decoder. The generic linear structure is particularly well-suited for interference cancellation and LMMSE filtering with priors, which incidentally is interference cancellation followed by per-user instantaneous LMMSE filtering. A controversial issue for linear iterative joint multiuser decoding is the type of information feedback to the multiuser detector. Here we present numerical results for both the exchange of extrinsic and posterior information and conclude that in terms of spectral efficiency there are only small differences.

Based on Generalized Distributive Law (GDL), improved belief propagation (BP) algorithm in logarithm domain for M-ary APSK modulated Low-density parity-check (LDPC) code which can get a better tradeoff between error performance and decoding complexity is proposed. Also the Min-Sum approximation of the improved log-BP algorithm is deduced. Simulation shows that the improved log-BP and Min-Sum algorithms achieve a better bit error rate(BER) compared with the corresponding binary algorithms when decoding a short frame 16APSK modulated LDPC code based on DVB-S2 standard.

In this paper, a discrete stochastic dynamic programming model for the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) downlink scheduler when using finite-state Markov channel (FSMC) model is presented. The model then solved numerically (using value iteration) to find the optimal policy for the case of two users sharing the same cell using a 3-state channel. The optimal policy is the one that maximizes the system throughput while maintaining a level of fairness between users. Simulation is used to study the performance of the resulted optimal policy and compared with Round Robin (RR) scheduler. The effects of the allowable number of channel states and the fairness factor on the optimal policy performance were also studied.

An irregular bit-interleaved coded modulation based iterative decoding (Ir-BICM-ID) aided scheme is proposed. The irregularity of the scheme pervades the three basic components of BICM-ID, namely the encoder, the unity-rate precoder and the bit-to-symbol mapper. As a result, adaptive BICM-ID schemes constituted by irregular components are created, which are capable of approaching the capacity of coded modulation. This is achieved by creating a narrow extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart, using a novel EXIT curve matching algorithm. The proposed Ir-BICM-ID scheme employs irregular convolutional codes (IrCC), irregular unity-rate codes (IrURC) and irregular mappers (IrMapper).

Adaptive transmission which adjusts optimally transmit power level, preceding matrix, modulation and coding schemes at the cost of perfect channel state information (CSI) , can greatly improve the performance of a communication link under fading environment. As the perfect CSI is difficult to be available at transmitter, it is valuable to study the adaptive design with partial CSI. Previous works showed that preceding with limited feedback proves effective in increasing transmission rate in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and further performance gain can be achieved if power control is used along with quantized preceding. However, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) has not been considered in previous works with partial CSIT. In order to maximize transmission rate under the constraint of fixed transmit power and target quality-of-service (QoS), we develop a novel adaptive preceding scheme along with joint power and bit loading for finite-rate feedback MIMO systems. What's more, the preceding matrix and power information are fed back through double codebooks for reducing the feedback overhead. In addition, codebook design for power information is given. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme greatly improves the transmission rate with low feedback overhead.

Using channel dependent precoding, a MIMO channel can be orthogonalized, which provides throughput gains especially if a linear receiver is used. When there is a limited set of modulation and coding schemes (MCS), however, we show that orthogonalization is not always the throughput maximizing strategy. Close to the upper and lower ends of operation points of the MCS set, it may be optimal to anti-orthogonalize the channel instead.
