In wireless networks, the physical layer adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme has been proposed to improve bandwidth efficiency over the time-varying channel. In this paper, we study the performance of ultra-wideband (UWB) based wireless personal area network where AMC is coupled with the distributed reservation protocol (DRP) and the delayed- acknowledgement (Dly-ACK) schemes at the link layer. Considering the channel variation caused by the people shadowing effect, we first propose an analytical model using an embedded Markov chain to investigate the queuing behavior at sender's buffer. Second, the throughput optimization problem is formulated and the optimal transmission mode and payload length are obtained. Simulation results are given to validate the analysis. By jointly considering channel characteristics, physical layer and link layer transmission schemes, the analytical results of the paper can provide useful guidelines for cross-layer optimization, which is essential to ensure quality of services in UWB networks.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) gives a communication system that can adapt to varying channel conditions and provide reliable communication at a wider range of signal to noise-ratios (SNRs). We investigate how the number of available transmission rates in the ACM scheme impacts communication performance and feedback requirements. To accommodate for the various rates in the ACM system we use serial concatenated trellis-coded modulation (SCTCM) consisting of a rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) code or a woven serial concatenated convolutional (WSCC) code, both with a rate-1 inner accumulate code and mapping to a Gray-labeled signal constellation. We show that significant reductions in complexity and corresponding savings in protocol overhead can be obtained without significant performance degradation. It is shown that an equal spacing of available rates over the expected range of SNRs is preferable to an uneven spacing.

We investigate in this paper the impact of mobility on the capacity of an OFDMA-based mobile WiMAX network in the presence of two types of flows: streaming and elastic, under a dynamic configuration where users come to the system following a Poisson process and leave it after a finite duration. This duration is independent on the amount of resources for streaming flow, such as voice, and proportional to the amount of resources they receive for elastic ones, such as data. Our analysis makes it possible to quantify several performance measures such as blocking/dropping probabilities as well as mean transfer time. Our results show that mobility decreases the blocking rate, introduced some dropping and increases the overall cell throughput.

modulation forensics is to detect the modulation type in wireless communications without any prior information. It finds both military and civilian applications such as surveillance and cognitive radio. It is a challenging task, especially in a non-cooperative environment, as no prior information on the incoming signal is available at the receiver. In this paper, we investigate the modulation forensics of linear digital modulations and space-time orthogonal code in slowly varying frequency-selective fading channels. With unknown channel vector, and phase distortion at the receive-side, we derive a composite test consisting second-moment nonlinearity and maximum likelihood test, and discuss the performance and forensic system confidence measure. It is shown that the proposed algorithm achieves almost perfect identification of the space-time coding, and high accuracy rate of modulation type detection.

In this paper, we analyze the M-WiMAX UL capacity limits under 2-tier cell layout, considering the effects of random user position, path loss models, fading channel and adjacent channel interference from WCDMA downlink. To account for the requirement of the system packet error rate and the supported MCS (modulation and coding scheme) levels, we propose a MCS-based capacity analysis method, which is verified through system-level Monte-Carlo simulation. Furthermore, a comparison between the conventional Shannon method and the proposed MCS-based method is presented.

It was previously shown that multilevel coded modulation improves the channel performance where Ungerboeck partitioning is used. Other partitioning techniques (Block and Hybrid) were proposed by Morelos-Zaragoza et al. All partitioning techniques were used to design the codepsilas rate in AWGN. The objective is to design efficient multilevel coded modulation system with the partitioning technique that gives the best performance for multipath Rayleigh fading channel. The rate design rule is always used for AWGN channel. In this paper, the design rule is extended to multipath Rayleigh fading channel. Computer simulation technique is used to evaluate the channel performance and also to determine which partitioning technique gives the best performance. As a second step, we extend the design rule proposed by Seshadri and Sundburg to multipath Rayleigh fading channel then we compare between the two design rules by using computer simulation which was done by using Matlab(version 7).

In this paper, a novel forward link cooperation scheme using hierarchical modulation is proposed. We define a cooperative unit cell as a unit which includes base-station (BS), fixed relay-station (FRS) and two types of mobile-station (MS) being the relay-assisted mobile-station (RAMS) and the non-relay-assisted mobile-station (NRAMS). We describe how to exploit the hierarchical modulation for the proposed cooperation between BS-FRS-RAMS link and BS-NRAMS link in the unit cell. The proposed scheme yields an improved throughput due to the characteristics of hierarchical modulation such as simultaneous transmission and multi-level protection layer. Simulation results and simple throughput analysis show that the proposed cooperation scheme outperforms the conven-tional cooperative and non-cooperative communication schemes with respect to the throughput performance.

In this paper, a multilevel coded modulation scheme in adaptive OFDM system is presented. Set partitioning-based on the asymmetric constellation has been used in this scheme to meet unequal error protection. The combination between multilevel coded modulation and adaptive technique can greatly improve the performance of the system. Simulation results have demonstrated the good performance of this proposed scheme which an intended bit error rate can be assured and the different quality of service can be met in data transmission.

Deep-sea visual exploration system plays an important role in the area of deep-sea expedition. Because of the harsh ocean environment, the deep-sea visual exploration system may face many problems such as high press of deep sea, instantaneous impact, deep-sea surge, local high temperature etc. Therefore, most current deep-sea visual exploration systems are not practicable. In this paper, considering the strongpoint of MPEG-4 coding and decoding technology with *** modulation and demodulation technology, we designed a deep-sea visual exploration device based on 10000 m coaxial cable and MPEG-4 video server. Moreover, as a step up, computer vision based on OpenCV development kit has been introduced in this deep-sea visual exploration device. As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the theory for building artificial systems that obtain information from images, on the other hand, computer vision technology studies and describes artificial vision system that is implemented in software and/or hardware. With computer vision technology, deep-sea visual exploration system can obtain better performance and is intelligent enough to deal with some simply instance. As a consequence, the proposed deep-sea visual exploration device has been working on the ship named as ocean-one for many years, and has obtained many wonderful deep-sea video material, as a result, has made important contributions to ocean investigation enterprise of China.

We propose a three-stage cross correlation-based timing synchronization algorithm for multiband-OFDM UWB systems. By utilizing the time-domain base sequence of the packet/frame synchronization preamble, the proposed algorithm first performs a coarse estimation on the reference symbol boundary, followed by a fine estimation on locating the exact boundary of the FFT window for the symbol, and a final check if the exact boundary is within an intersymbol interference-free zone. Numerical results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of mean square error and synchronization probability with respect to prior works.
