We propose an enhanced MCS for demodulation-and-forward scheme in transparent RS. The demodulation-and-forward scheme only demodulates and modulates the received signal to relay in symbol-by-symbol manner. In this scheme, RS can relay the received signal within one frame period. However, RS could suffer from frame delay when it adopts decode and forward scheme. In addition, we think that MR-BS is required to have enhanced MCS for demodulation-and-forward scheme instead of the MCS in existing specifications of 802.16e. With making use of coding rate 2/3 and 5/6 for both QPSK and 16-QAM, which is absent between BS and MS link, the link quality between BS and RS can be enhanced by using lower modulation orders. And also, we want to suggest another encoding slot concatenation and its concatenation rule and parameters and its simulations results will show merits of enhanced MCS than existing MCS performances.

Nowadays, there are lots of research efforts focusing on cross-layer designs combining adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with an automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol. One of the main drawbacks of these research works is that they rely on first-order amplitude-based finite-state Markov chains (AFSMC) to model the wireless fading channel. Furthermore, most of the analytical models used in these works present several deficiencies that could compromise the design of cross-layer protocols. To overcome the aforementioned problems, in this paper we propose a novel cross-layer analytical framework that is based on both the use of a first-order two-dimensional Markov model and a judicious implementation of the AMC threshold searching algorithm used in the transmission mode (TM) selection. This threshold search is designed independently from the channel model and is able to discriminate between useful and useless TMs. To exploit the joint impact on QoS performance measures of both AMC and ARQ we present a formulation of an AMC/ARQ cross-layer design as a constrained optimization problem.

One of the key features of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). Link Adaptation at Node-B is done on the basis of Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) reports sent by the User Equipment (UE). However there is a delay of about 10 ms between computation of a CQI report at UE and the corresponding Transport Format and Resource Indicator (TFRI) selection at the Node-B. This delay significantly degrades the performance of link adaptation process. In order to compensate for this loss of performance, we propose predictive CQI reporting by the UE. A simple linear predictor based on NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) adaptation is shown through simulations to provide substantial gain in HSDPA link throughput. Results show that predictive CQI reporting provides larger gain in channel environments with medium to high Doppler and lack of multipath diversity.

In image processing, classification and compression are very common operations. Compression and classification algorithms are conventionally independent of each other and performed sequentially. However, some class distinctions may be lost after a minimum distortion compression. In this paper, two new schemes are developed that combine the compression and classification operations in order to optimize some classification metrics. In other words, the compression systems are improved under classification constraints. In the first scheme, compression is achieved by using adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM). Optimization of filter coefficients is done by using a simple genetic algorithm (GA). In the second scheme, compression is achieved by image transform and quantization. The parameters in transform and quantization are adapted to improve the compression system and reduce the classification errors. Computer simulations are performed on hyperspectral images. The results are promising and illustrate the performance of the algorithms under various classification constraints and compression schemes.

In order to design a simple and highly accurate channel estimator for wireless personal area network systems, this paper proposes Golay sequence aided channel estimation. To evaluate the performance of proposed channel estimation, bit error rate performance of single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization has been analyzed by computer simulation. When 8PSK modulation and Reed-Solomon coding RS(255, 239) as forward error correction are used, the proposed Golay sequence aided channel estimation works very well in millimeter-wave and non line-of-sight fading environments with a 1.8 dB degradation of E b /N 0 at 10 -6 of bit error rate against the ideal channel estimation, which is practically acceptable. Moreover, comparing with Chu sequence aided channel estimation, the proposed Golay sequence aided channel estimation improves 0.4 dB of E b /N 0 at the bit error rate while achieving much less hardware than Chu sequence aided one, which is very important for mobile terminal applications.

This paper considers the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) capacity enhancement considering the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, in the downlink, including the effects of system bandwidth and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) efficiency. Firstly, the system bandwidth efficiency is calculated for LTE framework. Then, the SNR efficiency using Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is approximated using curve fitting. The used fitting function is an attenuated and truncated form of the Shannon bound in order to approximate the LTE composite spectral efficiency for the modulation and coding Set (MCS). Finally, the total capacity expected results are calculated for different multi-antenna configurations, revealing large capacity gains when compared with Single Input Single Output (SISO).

In this paper, we study the iterative detection problem for a coded system with multi-ary modulation. We show that, with iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection, superposition coded modulation (SCM) can provide performance superior to that with other traditional signaling schemes used in trellis coded modulation (TCM) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). This finding provides a useful guideline for system design considering inter-symbol interference (ISI) and other forms of interference. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the iterative LMMSE detection with different signaling schemes.

OFDMA-based IEEE802.16 implements among other features adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) which results in a different bit rate for each user depending on its position in the cell as well as the radio condition it experiences; users away from the base station experience lower throughput. In case of (intra-cell) mobility, the download time for the data user will thus depend on the different locations she or he visits. This in turn impacts the overall (Erlang) capacity of the system defined as the maximum number of users that can be handled simultaneously by the system for a given target blocking probability. This is the focus of the present work where we model the cross-layer capacity of the system under a general user mobility pattern.

Bit or frame error rates are commonly used as performance measures in wireless communication systems. However, in emerging applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), the bit rate outage probability is often a more useful performance measure. In this paper, an accurate method is proposed for approximating the probability distribution of the downlink received signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) in the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel of a 3GPP network. Based on this distribution, a power adjustment scheme is proposed to minimize the weighted sum of bit rate outage probabilities for multiple users. It is shown that the proposed method can greatly improve outage probability fairness without incurring a very large degradation in throughput.

The joint tactical information distribution system (JTIDS) is a hybrid frequency-hopped, direct sequence spectrum system that utilizes a (31,15) Reed-Solomon (RS) code and cyclical code-shift keying modulation for the data packets, where each encoded symbol consists of five bits. The primary drawback to JTIDS is the limited data rate. In this paper, an alternative waveform compatible with the existing JTIDS channel waveform but with a two-fold increase in data rate is analyzed. The system to be considered uses (31,15) RS encoding as in the original JTIDS, but each pair of five-bit symbols at the output of the Reed-Solomon encoder undergoes serial-to-parallel conversion to two five-bit symbols, which are then independently transmitted on the in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier using 32-ary biorthogonal keying with a diversity of two. The performance obtained for the alternative waveform is compared with that obtained with the existing JTIDS waveform for the relatively benign case where additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is the only noise present as well as when pulse-noise interference is present. Errors-and-erasures decoding (EED) as well as errors-only decoding are considered. Our analyses show that the proposed alternative JITDS waveform performs better in the presence of AWGN as well as both AWGN and pulse-noise interference. There is no significant advantage to using EED with the alternative waveform as compared to errors-only decoding.
