In recent years, LED technology emerged as a prime candidate for the future illumination light source, due to high energy efficiency and long life time. In addition, LEDs offer a superior flexibility in terms of colors and shapes, which leads to a potentially infinite variety of available light patterns. In order to create these patterns via easy user interaction, we need to sense the local light contribution of each LED. This measurement could be enabled through tagging of the light of each LED with unique embedded IDs. To this end, we propose a new modulation and multiple access scheme, named as code- time division multiple access - pulse position modulation (CTDMA- PPM): a form of PPM which is keyed according to a spreading sequence, and in which the duty cycle is subject to pulse width modulation (PWM) according to the required lighting setting. Our scheme considers illumination constraints in addition to the communication requirements and, to our best knowledge, it has not been addressed by other optical modulation methods. Based on the proposed modulation method and multiple access schemes, we develop a system structure, which includes illumination sources, a sensor receiver and a control system. Illumination sources illuminate the environment and transmit information, simultaneously. According to our theoretical analysis, this system structure could support a number of luminaries equal to the size of the CDMA codebook times the dimming range.

Weather attenuations can have a distorting effect on signal fidelity above 10 GHz that lead to excessive digital transmission error. This loss of signal is commonly referred to as signal attenuation. Signal attenuation impacts QoS in wireless and satellite networks. An intelligent decision support system is therefore necessary for service providers by accurately calculating rain, gaseous, cloud, fog, and scintillation attenuations using predicted signal-weather correlated database in collaboration with ITU-R propagation models combined with gateway, and ground terminal characteristics. The effect becomes a key feature in adjusting and improving satellite signal power, modulation and coding schemes, monitored and controlled altogether by a powerful and efficient intelligent-based attenuation countermeasure system. A three dimensional relationship is proposed among these attenuations with respect to propagation angle and rainfall rate (Harb et al., 2007). The result pilots an enhanced back propagation-learning algorithm that is used to iteratively tune the intelligent controller based on fuzzy logic technique with returned SNR values for activating the weighted modulation/Codepoint to its optimal values, depending on actual or predicted weather conditions, configuration settings and tolerance/safety margins for SLA commitment.

This paper deals with the problem of finding an optimal subcarrier allocation strategy for uplink and downlink communications in an OFDMA metropolitan wireless system. In particular a two steps approach is considered; at the first step the scheduler establishes the amount of resources to assign to users on the basis of their quality of service (QoS) constraints, while, at the second step, channel conditions are used to allocate subcarriers to users. A simple strategy for choosing the appropriate modulation and coding scheme according to the channel conditions of the assigned subcarriers is also proposed.

We show that by applying a cascaded convolutional encoder using two stages of coding, the last being a double repetition code, to "preceded" generalized minimum-shift keying (MSK) signals with pulse shape of duration two symbol periods a significant improvement in power and spectral efficiency is achieved. With only a double repetition code, it is shown that the signal has a power spectrum identical to uncoded MSK-like. When outer encoder is applied to improve the power efficiency, the bandwidth expansion is just a reciprocal of the outer encoder rate. It is demonstrated that considering performance, bandwidth and receiver complexity, generalized MSK signal coded using our special cascaded convolutional codes is an improvement over MSK and generalized MSK coded with "optimum" convolutional codes for the same code rate and receiver complexity reported previously for the same modulation scheme.

We have proposed a novel model-based compression technique for nonstationary landmark shape data extracted from video sequences. The main goal is to develop a technique for the compact storage of landmark shape data. We use nonstationary shape activity (NSSA) to model the shape sequences. The shape data is encoded by applying differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) on the shape velocity coefficients under the NSSA model. We have studied the system performance in terms of compressibility-distortion trade off. NSSA based compression technique has been compared with two other methods based on existing shape modeling techniques namely, stationary shape activity (SSA) and active shape model (ASM). We tested our system with landmark shape data extracted from multiple video sequences of the CMU mocap database. It was found that NSSA outperforms both SSA and ASM in terms of compressibility for a given distortion tolerance. Thus NSSA based compression technique could be very useful in the applications like storage of large volumes of biomedical landmarks' data.

Evaluation, testing, and performance analysis of modulation, coding, multiple access, diversity methods and other countermeasure techniques over stochastic communication channels requires as accurate channel model as possible leading to immense complexity of such models. However, even have a very accurate method the ldquoperfect simulationrdquo of the channel would remain impossible because of the nonstationary stochastic behavior of most of the communication channels, especially the wireless ones. Fortunately, for different techniques different level of abstraction of the reality can be taken into account without any/or significant influence on the performance analysis of such techniques. This paper deals with Markov models applicable for stochastic simulation of the digital communication channels. Different level of abstraction to deduce digital processes from the analog channel measured and the relevant error gap and burst characteristics necessary to evaluate the appropriate Markov model will be introduced by some examples. Special attention is paid for the renewalness properties of the gap and burst processes. One of the main finding of this paper is the statement, that to carried out the appropriate choice of the Markov model the renewalness properties of both burst and gap processes should be taken into account simultaneously. In addition, according to the best knowledge of the author, the duality relation between the gap and burst processes are derived in the first time.

In this paper, we define a resource allocation problem focusing on the scheme minimizing energy consumption of subscribers in uplink subframe of the IEEE 802.16 OFDMA systems. In order to clearly formulate the relation between the uplink resource allocation and energy efficiency of subscribers, we use the multiple choice knapsack (MCK) problem, which is proved to be an NP-hard problem. Instead of finding an optimal solution, we seek a suboptimal solution. Based on the problem formulation, we adopt the existing solution of the Multiple Choice Knapsack problem to solve the resource allocation problem. The suboptimal solution adaptively uses the modulation and coding scheme defined in the IEEE 802.16 systems to minimize the required transmission power while guaranteeing QoS. Our simulation results show that the suboptimal algorithm can reduce the energy consumption up to 53% compared to the channel state information (CSI) scheme, which determines the modulation and coding level only considering the channel state information.

This document describes a new approach to generate binary signals with varying pulse-lengths for the use in power electronics. The novel modulation scheme SB-ZePoC (Zero Position coding with Separated Baseband) was primarily developed for Class-D audio amplifiers. This modulation scheme has the extraordinary advantage that the signal band is free of harmonic distortion and carrier intermodulation products. SB-ZePoC allows very low switching frequencies compared to conventional Pulse Width modulation (PWM) schemes. A modified ZePoC scheme with low latency time (LLT-ZePoC) is introduced. Advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional PWM-schemes on the background of power electronics applications will be discussed.

Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important for small form factor mobile devices, as battery technology has not kept up with the growing requirements stemming from ubiquitous multimedia applications. This paper addresses link adaptive transmission for maximization of energy efficiency rather than throughput. We extend our previous results for flat fading OFDMA to frequency-selective channels. Different from existing water-filling power allocation schemes that maximize throughput subject to overall transmit power constraints, our scheme adapts both overall transmit power and its allocation according to the states of all subchannels and circuit power consumption to maximize energy efficiency. We demonstrate the existence of a unique globally optimal link adaptation solution and provide iterative algorithms to obtain this optimum. Simulation results show at least a 15% improvement in energy utilization when frequency selectivity is exploited.

A server sharing model is presented to model the downlink scheduler in 3G wireless networks. This model is used to find the average achievable service rate per user for a given fairness criterion. The wireless channel is modeled by a Finite State Markov Channel (FSMC) to reflect the effect of Adaptive modulation and coding used in 3G wireless networks. This model can be used to implement differentiated services in 3G wireless networks. It facilitates QoS control on the last hop, i.e., the wireless link. The results obtained show that this methodology provides qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the wireless link sharing mechanism in 3G wireless networks.
