MIMO-OFDM wireless systems require adaptive modulation and coding based on channel state information (CSI) to maximize throughput in changing wireless channels. Traditional adaptive modulation and coding attempts to predict the best rate available by estimating the packet error rate for each modulation and coding scheme (MCS) by using CSI, which has shown to be challenging. This paper considers supervised learning with the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm as a new framework for adaptive modulation and coding. Practical k-NN operation is enabled through feature space dimensionality reduction using subcarrier ordering techniques based on postprocessing SNR. Simulation results of an IEEE 802.11n draft-compatible physical layer in flat and frequency selective wireless channels shows the k-NN with an ordered subcarrier feature space performs near ideal adaptation under packet error rate constraints.

For high rate LDPC codes with light column weight and few redundant checks in their parity check matrix, the belief propagation (BP) decodings yield good error performance at the cost of high complexity. Aiming at seeking a effective decoder with good performance versus complexity tradeoff for this kind of LDPC codes, we present a new decoding framework which cascades a bit flipping (BF) variant with the ordered statistic decoding (OSD). During the iterative decoding of BF variant, the flipping value for each codeword bit is summed. The summation for each bit will be utilized as the reliability input for the OSD postprocessing, if no valid codeword is found after the maximum number of iterations for the BF variant is reached. With respect to the BP, simulation results show that the proposed BF-OSD achieves comparable performance with much less complexity.

This paper proposes a novel pulse code modulation /frequency modulation (PCM/FM) demodulation method using an efficient recursive algorithm to compute discrete short-time Fourier transform (DSTFT) of the *** this approach,instead of excluding the old samples,their importance is diminished by using all-pole *** DSTFT-based PCM/FM demodulation method is simple because it expands the signal in a time-frequency plane and demodulates it only by searching the instantaneous spectral peaks without complicated carrier-recovery *** computation is reduced and the bit error rate(BER) is *** effectiveness is illustrated by the simulation and test results.

Multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC- CDMA) is a powerfull modulation technique that is being considered in many emerging broadband communication systems. However the high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of the MC-CDMA signal, a special drawback of multicarrier transmission, has limited its wider aplication due to inefficient use of power amplifiers. PAPR strongly depends on particular spreading sequences considered for transmission. Therefore, the performance analysis of uplink MC-CDMA for different spreading sequences and for different receivers in the presence of Saleh model of high power amplifier (HPA) is presented. The results of our analysies show that the aplication of Golay codes in conduction with micro statistic multi-user receiver (MSF-MUD) provide significant better result as the other investigated spreading sequences and receivers.

This paper describes the implementation of a Ka-band satellite channel simulator with emphasis on the synthesis of scintillation processes. The problem becomes one of generating a given probability density function, the Moulsley-Vilar distribution, with a specified power spectral density using a Wiener model based on orthogonal Hermite polynomials for the nonlinearity. A numerical procedure is devised to calculate the filter and nonlinearity coefficients of the Wiener model. The generation of rain processes conforms to the Maseng-Bakken model.

This paper considers the problem of power management and throughput maximization for energy neutral operation when using energy harvesting sensors (EHS) to send data over wireless links. It is assumed that the EHS are designed to transmit data at a constant rate (using a fixed modulation and coding scheme) but are power-controlled. A framework under which the system designer can optimize the performance of EHS when the channel is Rayleigh fading is developed. For example, the highest average data rate that can be supported over a Rayleigh fading channel given the energy harvesting capability, the battery power storage efficiency and the maximum allowed transmit energy per slot is derived. Furthermore, the optimum transmission scheme that guarantees a particular data throughput is derived. The usefulness of the framework developed is illustrated through simulation results for specific examples.

Galileo system uses direct sequence/spread spectrum (DS/SS) as its modulation method. Single delta delay lock loop (Delta-DLL), where Delta is sample duration between early and late correlation values, has been widely used for code tracking in DS/SS systems. When the Delta-DLL is used for code tracking in ideal environments, code tracking bias does not arise because the symmetry of the correlation function is not destroyed. However, in multipath (MP) environments, a large code tracking bias arises owing to the asymmetrical correlation function. An MP signal always has a propagation delay time after that of the line of sight signal. Thus, correlation values in the advanced offset region are less distorted than those in the delay offset region. From this observation, we propose an effective tracking bias compensation scheme for the Galileo E1 open service signal.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffer performance degradation in fast fading channels due to intercarrier interference (ICI). Combining frequency domain equalization and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), the iterative receiver is able to harvest both temporal and frequency diversity. In order to perform coherent detection and estimation, channel state information (CSI) is indispensable. Being able to accurately and effectively acquire CSI in the fast time-varying channel is critical. Conventional frequency domain channel estimation (CE) methods have an irreducible error floor at high normalized Doppler frequency f d T s , since ICI corrupts the orthogonality among subcarriers. Considering that the fast time-varying channel is also a source of temporal diversity, CE ought to take place in the pre-FFT time domain. Realizing channel variations in time are often smooth, this paper proposes a time domain channel estimator using pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) with complexity O(N), where N is the FFT size. Simulation results demonstrate that a PSAM system with channel estimation provides excellent trade-off between performance, complexity and spectral efficiency.

In this paper, a modification to the weighted bit- flipping (WBF) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is proposed. This modification, based on the adjustment in reliabilities of the check sums during iterative decoding, can be applied to various WBF algorithms. Our studies show that the modification can be achieved with a small increase in complexity, but leads to an appealing improvement in error performance.
