This paper proposes a new coded cooperation protocol based on multilevel coded modulation for the case when the number of cooperative nodes is arbitrary. If the number of cooperative nodes is N, the proposed system makes a cooperative diversity with the multilevel coded 2 N -PAM. Multilevel coded 2 N -PAM can be decomposed into N parallel binary channels. Thus, the node can assign its own information and the other nodes' information to respective parallel channels. The destination node decodes the information of respective source nodes using the received symbols at N consecutive time-slots. We show that the proposed multilevel coded cooperation can obtain N the diversity gain and outperform the time-division cooperative and signal superposing cooperative transmissions based on the outage probability analyses.

Recently pi/4 shifted differential quadrature phase shift keying (pi/4-DQPSK) modulation has attracted much attention as it is used for high-capacity code division multiple access (CDMA) based digital cellular systems. One of the major reason behind this is the provision for differential detection which allows production of low complexity mobile units. In this paper, we present analytical expressions for bit error rate (BER) of pi/4-DQPSK modulation with L-branch selection combining (SC) diversity in Nakagami-m fading channels perturbed by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The derived end expressions are in closed form and contain finite series of Gaussian hypergeometric function. This makes evaluation of error rates much straightforward compared to earlier approaches that required single or, even double numerical integration. Some special instances such as the non-diversity case and Rayleigh fading case are also investigated and plotted alongwith the main findings. The results are however limited to integer values of fading severity parameter m.

An accurate and simple link quality model is crucial in system evaluation of different link adaptation (LA) solutions, for it acts as a link-to-system (L2S) interface which provides the block-error rate (BLER) performance of a certain modulation coding scheme (MCS) corresponding to the current SINR states. Our previous work in the work of Chen et al. (2007) has verified the good accuracy of the MI-based model for rate compatible LDPC coded OFDM system. In this paper, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) strategy and two hybrid ARQ schemes of variable retransmission length, partial chase combining and full incremental redundancy, have been designed to check the accuracy of the look-up tables (LUTs) obtained by the MI-based model. The predicted results are quite in accord with the simulation ones, which confirms that the MI- based model provides accurate and simple LUTs for LA design of LDPC codes.

Estimation of the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) is one of the most important functionalities of the GPS/Galileo receivers. However, the conventional GPS receivers are not able to satisfy the CNR estimation requirements for the location based services, E-911, and moderate indoor reception. In this paper we derive a total of seven moment based CNR estimators and present the results for the simulation based BOC (binary offset carrier) modulated signal and the measurement based BPSK (binary phase shift keying) modulated signal. We compare the results of the different estimators and find the most robust estimator.

Recently, a new class of trellis codes called "balanced" space-time trellis codes has been proposed. These codes are "balanced" because they use the points of the MIMO constellation with the same probability. In this paper, we propose a new and simple method to design these codes for 4-PSK and 8-PSK modulations and several transmit antennas. This design method can be easily extended to 2 n -PSK modulations. Furthermore, new balanced STTC with 3 and 4 transmit antennas are given with better performance than the previously published codes.

Cosine-modulated transforms such as the Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) are key elements in audio coding. They allow efficient energy compaction and perceptual irrelevancy reduction. The frequency localization can be adapted to the signal characteristics and fast implementations exist. All of this has made MDCT the most popular transform in audio coding. In this paper we solve a problem never addressed in the literature: in order to enable variable MDCT sizes in communication codecs, we demonstrate how frequency resolution can be adapted on the fly without using transition windows hence decreasing coding delay. A low complexity implementation of the method is also proposed.

In this paper, the design of constellation mapping for bit interleaved coded modulation systems with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel is studied. Based on minimizing pair-wise error probability, a design criterion is proposed to find the optimal constellation mapping for a MIMO-BICM-ID system. Using the design criterion and employing the binary switching algorithm, some optimal constellation mappings are found for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional cases. It is shown that proposed mapping schemes outperform conventional ones significantly at high Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) over fading channels.

In this paper a cooperative retransmission scheme for 802.11 WLANs is proposed. The mechanism allows stations with good channel to the access point to retransmit packets on behalf of other stations with worse channel. The cooperative partner selection is carried out in a completely opportunistic and distributed way that is compatible with 802.11. Simulations performed in a realistic WLAN scenario with adaptive modulation show that the system provides considerable gains in terms of goodput and packet error rate in comparison with legacy 802.11.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) in which the signature code assignment to users contains a random element has recently become a cornerstone of CDMA research. The random element in the construction is particularly attractive in that it provides robustness and flexibility in application, whilst not making significant sacrifices in terms of multiuser efficiency. We present results for sparse random codes of two types, with and without modulation. Simple microscopic consideration on system samples would suggest large differences in the phase space of the two models, but we demonstrate that the thermodynamic results and metastable states are equivalent. This may have consequences for developing algorithmic methods to escape metastable states, thus improving decoding performance.
