We define a DHT system whose aim is to combine the routing efficiency typical of randomized networks, i.e. average path length O(logn/ log log n), with the ease of coding and the start-up efficiency of an optimized uniform system. Our proposed system is non-uniform, even though it is not explicitly randomized. In particular, the difference in terms of finger tables between two adjacent peers in a large system is very moderate, and predictable based on an approximation of the peers' keys. These characteristics allow us to adopt a (multi-hop) Neighbor of Neighbor routing algorithm, which asymptotically achieves O(logn/ log logn) average path length, and that in practice may even slightly outperform randomized networks containing more than 100,000 peers.

In this paper, we present a general mathematical framework for performance analysis of systems employing bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The proposed analysis is general enough to include impairment by general types of noise and interference with finite moments such as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Gaussian mixture noise, narrowband interference, and ultra-wideband interference. We present an asymptotically tight upper bound for the bit error rate (BER) and a closed-form expression for the asymptotic BER at high signal-to-noise ratios. Our analysis shows that, if the popular Euclidean distance metric is used for Viterbi decoding, BICM-OFDM systems optimized for AWGN are also optimum for any other type of noise and interference with finite moments.

The acknowledgment schemes of legacy 802.11 do not support optimized performance due to high overheads. The performance further deteriorates for real time traffic. Transmission opportunity (TXOP) mechanism and Block Acknowledgements (Acks) were later introduced to facilitate improved performance in 802.11e. In this paper we aim to prove the effectiveness of both TXOP and Block Ack and analyze their effects under varying channel conditions through simulations carried out in NS-2.

A generic cooperative BICM system is described and an analytical model capturing relay error through a binary symmetric channel (BSC) is presented. The analytical model is called Post-BSC model as the BSC channel is placed after encoder of the relay node. Tight BER upper bound is derived for the presented model and close match between simulation and analysis for the presented model is observed. However it is also observed that the proposed model is optimistic and fails to effectively model the original system at low SNR conditions of the source to relay link. Despite this fact the incorporation of the Post-BSC model based maximum likelihood decoding greatly improves the system BER with respect to the original DF scheme.

This paper presents a direct method of analyzing the distortion effects of the power amplifier nonlinearity on the CDMA signal. In the analysis approach of the paper, the various user signals, which are composed of data-modulated Walsh codes, which are also modulated by various scrambling codes, are modeled as independent random sequences. These sequences are band limited, using square-root raised cosine filters and modulated by a carrier frequency before being input to the nonlinear power amplifier. In the analysis approach of the paper, the amplifier characteristics are approximated by a polynomial of sufficiently high degree such that over the range of input signal, the approximation error is negligible. For the region of amplifier operation of interest in this paper, terms of degree higher than forty may be needed compared to an earlier simplified analysis presented by the author wherein only cubic distortion terms have been considered. The expressions for both the output signal power and the output signal power-to-distortion power spectral density ratio are given in the form of a finite series with its coefficients being a function of the amplifier input power level, the number of codes, and the amplifier transfer characteristics. The paper also shows that the amplifier possesses a maximum capacity defined as the maximum total bit rate Rt that can be present at the amplifier input for a specified output signal power back-off and the required output bit energy to distortion power spectral density ratio (E b /N 0d ). Also for any given output back-off and user data rate, the (E b /N 0d ) ratio is a strong function of the number of codes M in the CDMA signal.

Multi-carrier OFDM-CDMA has a range of advantages that make ideal for high data rate wireless access system. A two-layer carrier interferometry (CI) phase coding approach is proposed for enhancing multi-user detection of the mm wavelength multi-carrier OFDM-CDMA based uplink broadband wireless access system (BWA). The proposed OFDM-CDMA scheme uses a two-layer CI phase coding structure, which comprises outer and inner CI modulations and is combined with the iterative interference cancellation and detection to boost the system capability in the high radio fading and strong multiple access interference environment. The orthogonal property of the CI signals is exploited to enhance diversities in time, frequency and spreading code domains, as well as to simplify signal processing. No pilot signal is needed. The proposed two-layer CI OFDM-CDMA scheme for the uplink BWA is mathematically analyzed, and its numeric simulations are carried out to evaluate the system performance. The simulation results show the superior characteristics of the proposed two-layer CI phase coding scheme for the uplink BWA system compared to other schemes.

Due to the random nature of LDPC codes, most of the good LDPC codes found in the literature do not possess a simple encoding structure. Thus, the encoding complexity of those LDPC codes can be as high as O ( N 2 ), where N is the codeword length. To reduce the encoding complexity, in this paper, binary irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) codes are extended to the nonbinary cases for bandwidth-efficient modulation schemes. By proper selection of nonuniform signal constellations, the constructed codes are inherently capable to obtain shaping gains even without shaping codes. Under Gaussian approximation, extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts for nonbinary IRA codes are developed and several codes of different spectral efficiencies are designed based on EXIT charts. Simulation results indicate that the proposed codes not only have simple encoding schemes, but also have remarkable performances that are comparable to those of nonbinary LDPC codes.

We evaluate the performance of irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in slow frequency-hop spread-spectrum systems with nonbinary orthogonal modulation. We also evaluate the performance of two adaptive coding protocols for the LDPC codes. The protocols use information derived by the iterative decoder during the decoding of each packet to select the code rate for the next packet. Performance results are presented for static partial-band noise channels and for partial-band noise channels with time-varying interference bandwidth or power. The adaptive coding protocol is shown to have good performance, even on channels that cause some of the individual codes to exhibit nonmonotonic throughput.

NASA's Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) office has been designing an agency-wide space communication and navigation architecture to support NASA space exploration and science missions out to 2030. SCaN chartered a study in 2007 to select codes, modulations, multiple access techniques and link protocols for this architecture. The study was conducted by Goddard Space Flight Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and consultants to NASA. This paper provides an overview of the study, describes the process used to carry out the study, and summarizes study results. Companion papers at this conference provide detailed technical information and analyses.
