We consider synchronization techniques required to enhance the cellular network capacity using base station cooperation. In the physical layer, local oscillators are disciplined by the global positioning system (GPS) and over the backbone network for outdoor and indoor base stations, respectively. In the medium access control (MAC) layer, the data flow can be synchronized by two approaches. The first approach uses so-called time stamps. The data flow through the user plane and through copies of it in each cooperative base station is synchronized using a timing protocol on the interconnects between the base stations. The second approach adds mapping information to the data after the user plane processing is almost finalized. Each forward-error encoded transport block, its modulation and coding scheme and the resources where it will be transmitted are multicast over the interconnect network. Interconnect latency is reduced below 1 ms to enable coherent interference reduction for mobile radio channels.

This paper first develops a simple closed form expression for the bit error rate (BER) of low density parity check coded (LDPC) M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) signals as a function of the signal constellation, received signal to noise ratio (SNR), and LDPC code parameters. Based on this new expression, joint optimization of the SNR target and transmission rate is studied for LDPC coded MQAM signals to maximize the average spectral efficiency (ASE) subject to an average transmit power constraint over Rayleigh flat fading channels. Total or truncated channel-inversion strategies are exploited for the inner-loop power control, since data rate and outer-loop SNR target are adapted either to coded BER (CBER) or to the SNR with instantaneous CBER constraint. It is shown that the use of BER-based adaptation instead of SNR-based adaptation is even more beneficial in coded systems than in un-coded systems in terms of ASE performance. Indeed some of our numerical examples show that adaptation based on CBER has up to 2-2.5 dB power saving over SNR-based adaptation on the ASE of coded systems.

This paper studies orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems employing coded modulation. Clipping is applied to reduce the peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) of the transmit signal. A soft compensation method is proposed to combat the clipping effect. It is shown that the proposed method can outperform conventional clipping effect mitigation methods. The impact of signaling schemes of the coded modulation on system performance is investigated. The average variance analysis and numerical results demonstrate that superposition coded modulation (SCM) together with the proposed detection technique provides a simple and efficient solution to clipped OFDM transmission.

We propose a scheme of utilizing unitary space-time symbol based nonbinary turbo code (USTSBTC) for wireless communication systems with multiple antennas over extremely fast Rayleigh block fading channels, where no channel state information (CSI) is available. We give an effective way of applying USTSBTC as an alternative to the original unitary space-time modulation and present an effective unitary space-time (UST) symbol based BCJR-like maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding algorithm, which can greatly improve the system performance. Since a constellation with a small size of T can also works well for a long coherence interval, our scheme fits for more conditions. With iterative decoding and/or multi-antennas, it can further improve the system performance, which helps to give an acceptable bit error rate. Specially, we demonstrate for the first time by simulations that when combined with a powerful error correcting code, transmit diversity would be more effective when a very low bit error rate is needed.

AMC (adaptive modulation and coding) is a well-known technique that selects a suitable modulation level and coding rate according to the userpsilas channel quality. The utilization of AMC in DL (downlink) requires the DL channel information of each user to properly select the MCS (modulation and coding scheme) level. However, under a practical OFDMA system environment, it is unsuitable to feed back all the channel information over the whole frequency resources due to the limited uplink bandwidth. In this paper, to optimize the performance of the AMC system we propose a FBL (flexible block-wise loading) algorithm combined with a novel CQI (channel quality information) feedback scheme with a reduced number of required bit. The proposed FBL algorithm dynamically allocates groups of sub-carriers to each user based on the channel quality information in a newly defined feedback signal format, thereby improving the sector throughput and outage probability performance.

This paper presents an experimental evaluation of oversampled, modulated filter banks for joint subband audio processing and coding applications. Joint subband processing and coding may be useful in some wireless audio devices such as advanced wireless digital hearing aids. We examine the use of oversampled GDFT and cosine modulated filter banks and propose using single sideband (SSB) real-valued filter banks as a compromise which is ideal for this application. The SSB filter bank provides real-valued signals for audio coding which are free from any aliasing cancellation constraints and hence are also suitable for audio processing such as subband gain adjustment. We support this conclusion with an experimental analysis of various filter bank designs for subband gain adjustment and subband audio coding.

A novel code optimization scheme is presented for the downlink of multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems employing phase shift keying (PSK) modulation. The optimization is based on dynamically re-allocating the available signature waveforms amongst the users on a symbol-by-symbol basis in order to manipulate and utilize interference amongst them. By applying the appropriate allocation criteria destructive interference between users is minimized while constructive is maximized. As a result, employing this on top of conventional schemes enhances the received signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) without additional transmitted power-per-user investment. The trade-off to the resulting performance improvement is the need for transmission of some extra side information, which by using the proposed processing is kept to a minimum. While performance benefits can be expected for various scenarios, the focus of this paper is on MC-CDMA precoding schemes. Analysis and simulations show a considerable bit error rate (BER) reduction for the case of decorrelating precoding methods.

In this paper, an improved spatial scalable wavelet domain distributed video coding (DVC) scheme is proposed. In this scheme, we adaptively apply differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding and discrete cosine transform (DCT) based intra block coding to reduced-resolution layer. Due to the low energy nature of high-pass subbands, WZ coding can be directly used. At decoder, in full-resolution layer WZ frame decoding, an efficient side information (SI) generation technique for low-pass subband is proposed, in which motion compensated interpolation (MCI) is performed on full-resolution signal. On the other hand, a refined technique is also employed to generate the SI for high-pass subbands by taking advantage of inter-band correlation. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides an efficient wavelet domain DVC coding paradigm.

A family of mathematical programs for both the un- capacitated and capacitated joint gateway selection and routing (U/C-GSR) problem in wireless mesh networks are presented. We detail a reformulation using the shortest path cost matrix (SPM) and prove that it gives the optimal solution when applied to the uncapacitated case but can lead to an arbitrary large optimality gap in the capacitated case. Furthermore, an augmented mathematical program is developed where link capacities are allowed to take values from a discrete set depending on the link distance. In this case, the multi-rate capabilities of WMNs (via, for example, adaptive modulation and coding) can be modeled. Evidence from numerical investigations shows that using the SPM formulation realistic network sizes of WMNs can be solved.
