The mobile user objective system (MUOS) uses WCDMA as a basis for its waveform definition. This paper deals with the quasi-analytic method of WCDMA physical layer simulation that has been used extensively for performance simulation, model development for system simulation and development of signal processing algorithms on the MUOS project. Quasi-analytic method offers speedup factors, relative to conventional waveform simulation, of 100x or more. It is shown here that quasi-analytic can also be very accurate.

A novel approach for extension of soft decode and forward strategy into higher order MQAM modulation is proposed. A new soft mapping function is introduced to map soft bits onto a point in the complex plane. It is shown that the proposed soft decode and forward (SDF) scheme attains the same level of diversity as amplify and forward (AF) scheme while improves the overall system spectrum efficiency through forwarding with higher order modulations. Simulation results show that new scheme outperforms DF for different links conditions.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance bounds of 802.16 technology under different physical and MAC parameters settings. The saturation throughput that can be reached in 802.16 networks is investigated through several scenarios in which we vary for instance the frame duration, the channel bandwidth, and the modulation and coding scheme in use. An original analytical framework was developed based on technical properties and system profiles specified by the IEEE 802.16 standard for systems using the Wireless MAN-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) air interface. The obtained results outline the importance of considering the MAC and physical overhead when evaluating the performance of 802.16 networks. They also highlight the impact of packing and fragmentation techniques, proposed by IEEE 802.16 standard, on the MAC performance and show the trade-off between decreasing the channel bandwidth and increasing the resulting saturation throughput.

The combination of user multiplexing and data encoding within Ultra Wideband systems has been proposed to improve bit error performance. Relative to conventional binary coding, this technique has shown to reduce error rates in scarcely populated systems. Where non-binary turbo coding modulates data to form an integer sequence, a random mapping is generally applied to develop a time hopping sequence. This paper explores the possibility of mapping through the application of truncated hyperbolic congruence codes. Comparative results against a random mapping indicate an improvement in system performance for higher turbo iteration levels in the receiver. Transceiver architecture is based upon the transmitter side equalization approach of time reversed communications.

In this paper, a novel scheme is developed for chip-level timing in UWB communications. To accomplish the proposed algorithm, the time hopping (TH) code is transformed to the spread time hopping (STH) code firstly, without changing ideas of UWB modulation. Invoking the cyclic autocorrelation of STH code, the timing parameter is acquired without training sequence. Desirable performance is brought out even if a few data is utilized for timing acquisition. Simulations are presented to validate the promising performance of the proposed scheme.

We develop a computationally efficient and memory efficient approach to (near) maximum a posteriori probability demodulation for MIMO systems with QPSK signalling, based on semidefinite relaxation. Existing approaches to this problem require either storage of a large list of candidate bit-vectors, or the solution of multiple binary quadratic problems. In contrast, the proposed demodulator does not require the storage of a candidate list, and involves the solution of a single (efficiently solvable) semidefmite program per channel use. Our simulation results show that the resulting computational and memory efficiencies are obtained without incurring a significant degradation in performance.

We introduce a 16-dimensional constant-amplitude constellation that is generated by concatenating either four constant envelope quadrature-quadrature phase shift keying (CEQ 2 PSK) symbols from Saha and Birdsall or four CEQ 2 PSK symbols recently discovered by Cartwright and also introduced here. Our new constellation doubles the number of points available for data transmission without decreasing the distance between points or increasing energy, and may therefore be used in a trellis coded modulation (TCM) system without constellation expansion penalty. Because the new constellation has constant envelope, the modulation scheme becomes very attractive for nonlinear channels such as the magnetic recording channel or the satellite channel with traveling wave tube amplifiers.

Orthogonal frequency and code division multiplexing (OFCDM) has received large attention as a modulation scheme to realize high data rate transmission. In this paper, the OFCDM system with fractional sampling (FS) is investigated. FS is a diversity scheme with a single antenna, which achieves path diversity through oversampling and parallel signal reception. However, the correlation among noise components may deteriorate the bit error rate (BER) performance at the receiver as the number of subcarriers and oversampling ratio increase. To overcome this problem, the alternative spreading code is used for the FS OFCDM system. Numerical results through computer simulation show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance of the receiver with the large oversampling ratio and the number of subcarriers.
