High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is an extension of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology of 3GPP Rel-99, with the objective to increase the data rate and reduce the latency in the downlink. The main focus of the work presented is to analyse the effect of congestion at the Iub interface on the HSDPA performance. The data flows should be adequately controlled in order to avoid congestion in the transport network. The 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) Rel. 5 specifications highlight two congestion detection mechanisms which are based on the frame sequence number (FSN) and the delay reference time (DRT) fields of HSDPA data frame. In addition to these, a third congestion detection mechanism based of Checksum of HSDPA data frame is considered. This paper discusses a congestion control scheme deploying all three congestion detection methods. It is shown, that a congestion control algorithm can effectively work using these congestion detection triggers and can control the offered load to the transport network. The simulation results presented in this paper confirm that the congestion in the transport network can be avoided, and hence the performance of HSDPA network can be significantly improved in all aspects.

A family of orthogonal modulations is widely spread in a variety of communication applications. These modulations include orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal code division multiple access (CDMA), a block of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and so on. General orthogonal modulation was developed for the design of new flexible modulations by a multidimensional rotation, where the rotation planes and angles are the modulation parameters. In this paper, an identification of these orthogonal modulations is presented. The identification method is based on general orthogonal modulations [1], whose modulation parameters should be estimated. A set of orthonormal vectors is obtained by received signal samples, and is used to estimate the modulation parameter of general orthogonal modulations. Computer simulations are executed to show a validity of the identification method. Bit error probability of the estimated modulation is given for 3-8 dimensional orthogonal modulations as illustrative examples.

As of July 31, 2007, there are over 522 million 3G subscribers in the world (source: ***). Out of these 130 million are on UMTS, a growth of almost 100% in one year. Data services are expected to grow significantly within the next few years. Current 2.5 G and 3 G operators are already reporting that a significant proportion of usage is now due to data, implying an increasing demand for high-data-rate, content-rich multimedia services. Although current Release 99 WCDMA systems offer a maximum practical data rate of 384 kbps, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) have included in Release 5 of the specifications a new high-speed, low-delay feature referred to as High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). HSDPA also known as Release 5, provides significant enhancements to the Downlink compared to WCDMA Release 99 in terms of peak data rate, cell throughput, and round trip delay. This is achieved through the implementation of a fast channel control and allocation mechanism that employs such features as Adaptive modulation and coding and fast Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ). Shorter Physical Layer frames are also employed High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) (UMTS Release 6) complements the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology. As the name suggests the improvement is in the uplink where the theoretical uplink data rate can be up to 5.76 Mbps. Together, HSDPA and HSUPA offer reduced latency and much higher data rates on the downlink and uplink, theoretically as high as 14.

Although density evolution accurately predicts the asymptotic performance of LDPC codes, it provides limited information for codes of short or moderate block length. For this reason, combinatorial methods have been employed to analyze the performance of finite-length LDPC codes under message passing decoding. The error floor phenomenon is a key issue of finite-length effects, which is caused largely by poorly connected subgraphs residing in the LPDC codes structure. Because of the unequal noise immunity of different bit levels, error floors become more pronounced for LDPC-coded high-order modulation. Nevertheless, the enumeration of error-prone patterns that lead to error floors has been proven to be NP-hard, which motivates us to find substitute metrics with manageable complexity. Considering trapping sets always comprise loops of low extrinsic message degree (EMD) and the connectivity of a loop with the residual graph can be characterized by its approximate EMD (ACE), in this paper we propose a fast method to identify loops with low ACE for a given code. In light of this, the vulnerable variable nodes residing on low-ACE loops are judiciously mapped to bit levels benefitting from stronger error protection. As a result, the error floor can be significantly improved at the cost of a minor increase of hardware complexity.

In this contribution we design the Iteratively Decoded Self-Concatenated Convolutional Codes (SECCC-ID) using extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. Good constituent Trellis Coded modulation (TCM) codes are selected for communicating over both uncorrelated Rayleigh fading and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels. At the receiver iterative decoding is invoked for exchanging extrinsic information between the hypothetical decoder components. The convergence behaviour of the decoder is analysed with the aid of symbol-based EXIT charts. Similarly, the search for the best TCM constituent codes is also based on EXIT chart analysis. Finally, we demonstrate that the selected codes are capable of operating within 1 dB from the maximum achievable rate.

In order to achieve the improved diversity over the original coded cooperation in fast fading channel, the novel cooperation strategy with hierarchical modulation is proposed in this paper, where users send both their own as well as their partners' parity bits with hierarchical error protection during the cooperation frame. Only the frame-level synchronization is necessary when using the proposed strategy, which facilitates the implementation on the uplink. The bounds for the block-error rate (BLER) of the proposed strategy are analyzed and the simulation results given.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffer performance degradation in fast fading channels due to intercarrier interference (ICI). Combining frequency domain equalization and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), the iterative receiver is able to harvest both temporal and frequency diversity. In order to perform coherent detection and estimation, channel state information (CSI) is critical. Conventional frequency domain channel estimation (CE) methods have an irreducible error floor at high normalized Doppler frequency f d T s , since ICI corrupts the orthogonality among subcarriers. Considering that the fast time-varying channel is also a source of temporal diversity, CE ought to take place in the pre-FFT time domain. With soft a priori information about the data symbols becomes available, this paper proposes a turbo channel estimator (TCE) structure which provides a way to consistently improve the bit error rate (BER). The complexity of TCE is further reduced by completely avoiding matrix inversion. Simulation results demonstrate that the PSAM system with TCE achieves no ICI with normalized Doppler frequency f d T s up to 20.46% with realistic mobile WiMAX channel environment.

In this paper we provide a tutorial-style overview of linear detection in iterative joint multiuser decoding. We show that a generic linear iterative joint multiuser decoder naturally replaces the canonical iterative joint multiuser decoder. The generic linear structure is particularly well-suited for interference cancellation and LMMSE filtering with priors, which incidentally is interference cancellation followed by per-user instantaneous LMMSE filtering. A controversial issue for linear iterative joint multiuser decoding is the type of information feedback to the multiuser detector. Here we present numerical results for both the exchange of extrinsic and posterior information and conclude that in terms of spectral efficiency there are only small differences.

We propose in this work a new state-dependent admission control scheme where the degree of acceptance of flows depends on the density of the users in a given location. The latter refers to different areas in a single OFDMA-based WiMAX cell wherein users are allowed to move internally between those areas as well as externally to other cells. We develop an analytical model which allows us to derive some performance measures such as blocking and dropping probabilities. Our results quantify how these metrics vary with the load as well as the admission strategies. Our density-based admission control algorithm is shown to lower the dropping probability of on-going calls without increasing too much the blocking probability of new ones.
