Carrier frequency offset (CFO) may cause multiple access interference (MAI) among users in multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system. In the paper the code sensitivity of spreading codes and its correlative to the CFO is observed. An important property of orthogonality invariant for Walsh Hadamard spreading codes under CFO is presented. By partitioning spreading codes into several mutually orthogonal groups, if the spreading codes are chosen from different groups, free MAI can be maintained for any values of CFO. The characteristic can help us to develop code selection algorithm for choosing appropriate spreading codes that has less MAI under frequency offset transmission.

In this paper performance of dynamic bandwidth allocation in broadband wireless networks under dynamic arrival process and channel SNR is evaluated using queuing analysis framework. Adaptive modulation and coding rate based on IEEE 802.16 standard is used to adjust the transmission rate adaptively in each frame time according to channel quality in order to obtain multi-user diversity gain. Arrival process is considered to be discrete-time Markov chain which is modeled by the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) as the traffic source. Quality of service parameters are evaluated under several allocated bandwidths to a single queue in the case of two scenarios: 1) different arrival traffic intensity, and 2) different channel quality. As expected, dynamic bandwidth allocation according to channel variations improves quality of service parameters.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently conducted a comprehensive study to identify the most appropriate and efficient modulation, coding, multiple access and link protocol techniques for future space communication links supporting space exploration and science missions. The study was chartered by NASA's space communication and navigation (SCaN) office and is referred to as the coding, modulation, and link protocol (CMLP) study. This paper describes the CMLP modulation evaluation and states the relevant conclusions and recommendations.

This paper addresses the use of adaptive modulation in progressive image transmission with multiple description coding in conjunction with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Specifically, two adaptive systems are considered: variable rate with fixed power, and variable rate with variable power. An algorithm is proposed to allocate power and constellation size at each subchannel by maximizing the throughput. Simulation results confirm that cross-layer optimization with adaptive modulation enhances system performance.

Quadruple repetition code exhibits unique properties when combined with precoded generalized minimum-shift keying signals of up to four symbol period pulse duration. It is shown that using two stages of channel encoding, the last being a quadruple repetition code, the code design for such modulation schemes simplifies. Also, it is shown that the nonlinear continuous-phase frequency-shift keying modulator can be replaced by a simple linear I-Q modulator to generate the same coded signals. The detection problem for the recovery of the symbols sequence from the decision variables is shown to be one corresponding to memoryless modulation, avoiding the use of maximum likelihood sequence detection.

This paper presents experimental results on MIMO multiplexing and MIMO diversity using precoding for OFDMA radio access in the evolved UTRA downlink. In the evaluations, we compare throughput performance of 4times4 MIMO with 1 to 4-stream transmission for various modulation and channel coding scheme (MCS) set to clarify the selection criteria for the number of streams on rank adaptation as the function of received E s /N 0 and fading correlations between antennas. Based on the evaluations, we concluded that throughput is maximized by using 3 or 4-stream transmission at the almost all region of received E s /N 0 excepting the low received E s /N 0 region less than 2 dB. Furthermore, the optimum combinations of the number of streams and MCS are identical when the antenna correlation is lower than 0.7. However, the switching points of received quality (E s /N 0 ) on the combinations of the number of streams and modulation scheme is shifted by 2 to 5 dB in case of fading correlation, rho= 0.5 and 4 to 8 dB in case of rho= 0.7 are compared to those in rho= 0.

We consider the uplink of a multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system that employs multiple (M > 1) receive antennas and maximum ratio combining at the base station. We propose a model that captures the impact of intercell interference coordination on the modulation and coding scheme dependent bit error rate (BER) performance. We analyze this model in two steps. First, we find a closed form formula to calculate the BER under Rayleigh fading for a single subcarrier. Second, we calculate the subcarrier collision probabilities under random and coordinated subcarrier allocation. Combining these two steps allows us to derive the average BER performance (over all OFDM subcarriers) without/with intercell interference coordination (ICIC). We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations in order to compare these two schemes when mobile stations are positioned randomly in multi-cell cell system. We find that at low and medium load coordinated allocation is superior (for various values of M), while at higher loads the two schemes perform similarly. We also find that at asymmetric load, it is beneficial to employ "asymmetric ICIC" as opposed to "symmetric ICIC". Finally, we explain a somewhat counterintuitive result that shows that the ICIC gain can be larger with multiple antennas at the base station than when there is only one antenna, although this gain is in the very low BER regime.

This paper presents a new TCP window size adjustment scheme for the automatic rate fallback (ARF) algorithm. The proposed scheme utilizes the information about radio usage monitored on the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer. Each station calculates the maximum available window size on each long-lived connection based on these information when the data transmission/reception rate is switched, and limits the maximum sending window size. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated and compared with that of standard TCP through several simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme enhances the transmission efficiency of TCP.

The concept of generalized 4PAM (G4PAM) is introduced in this paper, where each 4PAM symbol includes one high bit and one low bit with non-uniformly spaced constellation. The channel capacity of G4PAM constrained additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is obtained via numeric calculation, so as these of the high and low bits in terms of independent demapping. Numeric results show that traditional hierarchal G4PAM has worse capacity property, and Gray mapping G4PAM constellation with different hierarchical degree suffers differently due to independent demapping. Further more, since independent demapping results in capacity loss, iterative demapping algorithms for both hard-output and soft-output decoding are presented.

In this paper, we study the use of iterative multiuser detectors for co-channel interference suppression in wireless cellular systems. We demonstrate that a receiver with a single receive antenna is capable of detecting and cancelling a single in-band interferer that uses the same coding and modulation scheme as the desired signal. We investigate the benefits of using such an interference canceller in the mobile receiver in the downlink scenario of a two-hop relay network. Results show significant improvements with iterative interference cancellation in terms of the average system throughput and outage probability. Because the interference canceller is so effective, more aggressive frequency reuse schemes can be now considered, such as using smaller cluster sizes, using 3-sectored cells where all sectors share the same frequency band, and using non-orthogonal channels for relaying.
