IEEE 802.11n standard has fulfilled the promise of improved performance when compared to the previous generation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) with the possibility of physical transmission rate up to 600 Mbps. But the well known performance anomaly of 802.11 still remains an open issue. A mobile station tends to change its modulation and coding scheme and transmit at lower bit rate due to the signal fading and interference. Besides, the 802.11 commercial devices adopt a simple First-In-First-Out (FIFO) scheduler without isolating the traffic flows addressed to different destinations. These have lead to a problem: whenever one or more stations transmit at lower bit rate, the performance of all the stations is heavily degraded. Our experimental results have pinpointed this problem. To counteract this problem, we propose an easy to deploy and portable solution to be implemented in the 802.11n base station, known as anomaly-aware IP scheduler with admission control. This cross-layer approach requires no modification to the current 802.11 standard and runs on top of the Linux kernel. The experimental results have shown the feasibility of our solution in minimizing the performance anomaly problem.

Hybrid Wyner-Ziv coders which employ a combination of Wyner-Ziv coding and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) encoding have recently gained popularity for applications such as video coding. In this paper we analyze the low-rate operational rate distortion performance of Wyner-Ziv coding using uniform scalar quantization, in the context of such hybrid coders. Motivated by video we consider the compression of a first-order Laplace-Markov source, and derive approximate analytical rate and distortion expressions which are accurate at low rates. We utilize the derived analytical expressions to address the problem of determining the optimal quantization interval ratio of the Wyner-Ziv and DPCM scalar quantizers, for a range of rates.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems give high data rates through spatial multiplexing or diversity using space-time codes. We propose a rate-adaptive modulation scheme combined with mode switching between spatial multiplexing and orthogonal space-time block coding. We first find out which modulation level and mode maximize the spectral efficiency with a given target bit error ratio (BER). If the rates of the two MIMO modes are the same, we select one mode which gives lower BER than the other. We also propose a simple mode switching algorithm using effective SNR and constellation specific constant. Numerical results demonstrate improvement over each fixed mode with adaptive modulation in terms of average spectral efficiency.

Impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmission has recently become popular for data communications. In the new IEEE 802.15.4 a standard, IR-UWB modulation is mated with a concatenated coding scheme consisting of a Reed-Solomon and a convolutional encoder. While most of the available literature has been dedicated to the study of uncoded IR-UWB transmission, this paper is concerned with the performance analysis for IEEE 802.15.4 a compliant concatenated coded IR-UWB systems. In particular, a semi-analytical error-rate expressions for coherent RAKE detection with suboptimal multipath combining is presented. While first a single-user channel is assumed, in the second part of this paper this analysis is extended to include the effect of IR-UWB multiple access interference. To this end, a Gilbert-Elliot-type Markov interference model is adapted to the IEEE 802.15.4 a modulation format.

Rain, snow, gaseous, cloud, fog, scintillation and other atmospheric properties can have a distorting effect on signal fidelity of Ku and Ka bands, thus resulting in excessive digital transmission error. This loss of signal is commonly referred to as signal attenuation. Signal attenuation impacts the QoS in wireless and satellite networks. Accurately predicting channel attenuation due to atmospheric conditions can enable mitigation planning by adaptively selecting appropriate modulation, coding, transmitted power level, transmission rate and configured frame size. The aim of this paper is to estimate different attenuations using predicted signal-weather correlated database in collaboration with ITU-R propagation models combined with interpolation methods, gateway, and ground terminal characteristics. A three dimensional relationship is proposed among these attenuations with respect to propagation angle and rainfall rate [l]-[8]. The outcome is key factor in diagnosing, adjusting and improving satellite signal power, modulation and coding schemes, monitored and controlled altogether by a powerful and efficient intelligent-based attenuation countermeasure system. These results will lead to an enhanced back propagation-learning algorithm that is used to iteratively tune the IS with returned SNR values to activate the weighted modulation/Codepoint to its optimal values, depending on actual or predicted weather conditions, configuration settings and tolerance/safety margins for SLA commitment.

This paper addresses the issue of wireless bandwidth partitioning of a mobile WiMAX cell. We consider a complete partitioning strategy, where the wireless bandwidth capacity of a cell is divided into trunks. Each partition is strictly reserved to a particular type of connection. Precisely, we distinguish four IEEE 802.16e 2005 service classes: UGS, rtPS, nrtPS and ErtPS. As we consider mobility, we also differentiate new call request from handoff ones. In addition, we take into consideration the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme, through the partition of the cell into different areas associated to a particular modulation and coding scheme. The purpose of the paper is to determine, using an analytical model and a heuristic approach, the nearly-optimal sizes of the partition sizes dedicated to each type of connection, which is characterized by 1) its service class, 2) type of request and 3) modulation and coding scheme. The main concern here is to propose simple and robust computational methods, which can be easily and efficiently used to dimension a mobile WiMAX network.

In this paper we develop closed-form approximations for the coded BER in bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. To obtain the desired expressions we apply the so-called saddle point approximation and use analytical forms of the probability density functions (PDF) of the reliability metrics. Numerical examples illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

Digital fingerprinting aims at protecting multimedia contents from illegal redistribution by embedding imperceptible fingerprints identifying the users. We propose two approaches for building fingerprinting codes that accommodate millions of users and resist tens of colluders. These approaches are based on recent information-theoretic analyses of good fingerprinting codes in two regimes: (1) very low rates, and (2) rates near capacity. Good low-rate codes have high minimum distance. Good high-rate codes are short and random-like. Simulation results are presented to assess decoding performance.

The paper describes a novel system which can be used interchangeably as a radar sensor and communication device. The system is being developed at Miami University using COTS components and its digital part is based on OFDM architecture. Arbitrary waveform generator with high-speed DSP capabilities is being used to create either random or deterministic OFDM waveforms and a high-speed ADC board is used in the receiverpsilas baseband portion to recover the incoming signals. OFDM technique is already widely used in broadband communications; however it is shown that system architecture based on this method of data coding and modulation can also be used in radar with minimum modifications. Indeed, modeling study shows that OFDM radar signals perform well in presence of jamming and interference and possess noise-like qualities making them good candidates for low probability of detect/intercept (LPI/LPD) system implementation. The system concept and design are discussed and LPI/LPD features of OFDM signals are illustrated via spectrogram. Experimental data from a baseband radar/communication digital system transceiver link operating at 300 MHz bandwidth are presented.

In this paper, we propose a noncoherent space-frequency (SF) code for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) systems for broadband wireless communications. The proposed noncoherent SF code matrix is constructed as a combination of a noncoherent SF code matrix and a differential modulation matrix. Comparing to noncoherent SF codes and differential SF codes in the literature, the advantages of our proposed code are higher spectrum efficiency, no error floor and more suitable for broadband communication systems. Taking advantage of the codeword structure of the proposed SF code, we devise a two-stage decoding scheme, in which the decoding process is implemented in two steps by decoding the component noncoherent codeword matrix and the component differential codeword matrix sequentially. Accordingly, the decoding scheme efficiently reduces decoding complexity. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme with two-stage decoding yields better performance than the noncoherent SF codes and frequency-domain differential codes proposed in the literature.
